.....like I say the only way to differentiate a gospel song and a secular song is by listening to the words.

I often wonder if I were to launch into a riff from Aeroplane (RHCP) if anybody would even notice.  I guarantee you NO ONE at my church has ever heard that song.  Super funky bass line, but the lyrics......  :o   :o   :o

....and yes, I do know that He would know what was on my mind and in my heart at the time, but the point is, sometimes people don't know when they should or should not be critical of what comes out of the choir stand.

Kirk Franklin "Stomp" = Parliament Funkadelic "One Nation Under A Groove"

Kirk Franklin "I've Been Looking For You" = Patrice Rushen "Haven't You Heard"

Bishop Paul Morton "Let It Rain" borrows a lot from Prince "Purple Rain"

I'm sure I'll think of a few more

Oh wow...I just listed to Stomp and I've been looking for you....by the secular artists on Youtube. I never heard of those groups/artists...it was very interesting to hear those songs and see how Kirk used those beats/music for his songs. I though he wrote those all on his own or with his song writers....just wow!!

the name of that song is "I will bless the lord at all times".

It kind of tripped be me out a little when i heard it too..lol (even though the staples singers where a christian group it's pretty bold just to jack the beat like that).
i will Bless The Lord At All Times is a P&W favorite at my church. One Sunday we played it and then the vocalists segued into singing "I'll Take You There" (we planned and rehearsed it this way) ... The congregation went wild!

Remember ... I'll take you there is basically a gospel tune anyway.  It worked out nicely.

We play it from time to time at my church with my older son on guitar and my younger son on bass.  They totally rip it apart.  I'll have to see if I can find a video somewhere.

****CORRECTION****  I WILL NOT be posting a video....found one....the singing is horrid.  My praise team would hang me from the ceiling fans by my thumbs if I put that one up.

The drummer in my non-church christian band. Hands me a cd and says. "do you think you can learn the bass line to track one". I am thinking to myself ohhh great and am terrible at this. I may be asking my father to help me with this. I turn it on and I hear the bass like to the Staple singers- I'll take you there. I happen to have been playing this run for about 6 months and play it at least once a week. I dont remember the name of the song but it was gospel.

That must be "I will Bless The Lord at All Times" ... ;)

I have been known to slip "Let's get it started " in the beginning of a service as folks are walking in... real soft ...

I was going to ask another question here and saw this post.
The today gospel bass players are their worst enemies. Meaning, you bass players of today are just holding yourselves back by thinking
there is only gospel music to play like.
Before gospel shout runs and so on.
There was Jazz, Blues,Ragtime and other style, where the gospel music of today came from.As a bass player you should learn to play rock, blues, jazz, and all style music.
Then in church when the time come put it all together and make your own style or borrow from others style.
Learn all styles of music bass runs and style and you will grow as a bass player.
I always tell bass players to grow
