Anybody got a....
« on: October 27, 2009, 02:09:56 PM »
Roland Micro Cube? Whaddaya think?

Got an acoustic gig Friday on a rooftop with no power supply. Buddy of mine's gonna play with me and he's got a Cube (for the battery power) and want's thinks I should get one, and of course, no guitar oriented decision can be made without the input of the Council (YOU!)

Thanks much.

How much of a factor is the ability to run on batteries in regards to this decision?

I played through a 4-speaker Micro Cube once. Sounded cool to me for what it is, but it's hardly a desirable sound.
It's on-par with the Vox DA5, also battery powered.

Peavey use to make an Audition amp that was battery powered, but I think it's long gone from production.

It's THE factor, lol. there is no power supply.

We could just as well use no amplification, but since he has his and can get another one for 80 bucks, was wondering what you guys thought.

Thanks Dave, I hadn't heard of any other battery powered amps (although I hadn't looked either). Yeah, Im just looking for something to amplify the sound a little louder than unplugged. If the sound's not that great, I'd just as soon go unplugged.

Thanks all for the input.

It works, but the sound isn't that good. But, for $80 it's pretty cheap. If you had some more $$, the Phil Jones Briefcase runs on a battery and sounds great with an acoustic guitar or bass.

i used to have one!! when i first started playing, and was uber naive, i bought it thinking it could use it at church. its a fun little amp, but i didn't know anything about practice amps and what not so I took it back. kinda wish i still had it.

I'm actually in the middle of building a cigar box guitar, and I've noticed a lot of those dudes use the cube, but that's going for a whole different vibe lol.

Come to think of it, I may be confusing it with the blues cube... Not sure.

I've been digging Seasick Steve lately. He plays a lot of 3 string stuff, and does some 1 string Diddley-bo stuff too. It's crazy how these dudes get that much sound out of so little.

I have an upright bass made out of a cardboard box that actually sounds pretty darn good. Haven't tried a cigar box, but they seem interesting. I would take a stab, I'd probably be too busy ruminating the differences in tone of a cigar box made of mahogany vs ash vs alder vs oak vs birch vs etc...

Lol, yeah, took me 15 minutes to decide between maple and red oak for the neck. I went with maple. Just as strong, but lighter, so hopefully more resonant.

The box is cedar, so it should sound like a Seagill lol

So far, I've made 2 measuring errors and I'm deciding If I want to procure another box, or patch up the gaps lol
