A progression is simply a group of chords.  Each chord in the group leads or "progresses" to the nest chord.  You have to understand theory in order to understand progressions.  The purpose of a progression is to get back to tonic.  Tonic is the 1st chord of whatever key you in.  If you in C major, tonic is a C major chord.  If you in C minor, tonic is a C minor chord, etc.  The way you get there is up to you.  Usually, music follows the basic zip code 3-6-2-5-1.  You might not play this exactly cuz u can use substitutions and and stuff.
Real musicians play in every key!!!
Music Theory, da numbers work!
