One thing I dislike about playing drums is playing with other musicians who don't have or share the same passion you do about playing.  For example, when our praise team is learning new material, I feel like I'm the only one who goes home and listens to the CD well enough to reproduce it during service.  I'm not saying that you have to be an exact duplicate of the recording artist, because you do want to add a little personality of your own, but at least you should be in the same neighborhood.  It's very frustrating playing songs correctly when no one else is.  You kind of stand out as being over aggressive when in actuality you're playing the song the way it's supposed to be played.  Another thing I dislike is when other musicians try to force and establish the tempo of songs when that's my job.  Sometimes our keyboadist will start a song too fast, only to have to slow it down before the vocals can come in.  That could have been avoided if he let me do my job.  Lugging around drums and hardware without help is always the number 1 complaint.  Hopefully, I wasn't too off base with my response.

Hey man I know how U feel about lugging all that equipment around.
Another thing I cant stand is playing in a room that is not sound friendly (high roof, brick walls, echos, etc.). And because of that u have to play extra soft because if u hit the drums any louder it will drown everything out.

1. Playing any song in 3/4 time signature. You know the beat... boom tap tap boom tap tap. Absolutely hate that beat.

2. Playing with a pianist whose ear is not that good and they have to play all the notes until they find the key of the song... HATED IT!!!

3. I know you said 1 or 2, but I hate playing quartet music. That monotonous 4/4 drives me crazy; especially when they get to the drive of the song and do it for like 20 minutes... HATED IT!!!

i hate when u in service and the organist or md tells u to stay in the pocket if u do a simple fill, but they do runs and killer chords throughout the entire song. thats not fair. lugging equipment is the number 1 worst thing. and when u do gigs wit a community choir, some of the churches drumkits are so horrible. even if u bring a snare and some cymbals it still anit cool. in my city we got a top ten list of churches wit the worst kits to play on. i dont mean bad, i mean horrible kits!!! like a folding chair for the throne, twigs for sticks, busted heads, thick hi hat bottoms for a crash, no hit hats at all, no cymbal stands, etc.

Yeah young sirs I definitely know about the lugging equipment complaint. My brother is a keyboardist so I tease and tell him about that all the time...
My biggest complaint is when at church they hear a song and their clap is outside this planet and the drummer has to get the train on the right track..then everybody looks at you thinking that your wrong...lol

Man the only thing I hate about playing the drums is LUGGING ALL THAT EQUIPMENT AROUND!!
All of the other musicians have it easy but the drummer has it the hardest. I recently did a gig and the bass player and i kinda got into it a little cause he got impatient while i was setting up telling me to hurry up. Well i told him to give me a hand or don't say anything at all!! After the gig we both laughed at the situation

Come on ya'll. Don't tell me that you don't get callouses...I hate that man.

Also, one thing I hate. I am all for experimenting with different scales during practice and rehersals, but when your bassist is experimenting DURING WORSHIP is when things get bad!!!!

I hate lugging equipment ofcourse.
Also, when all of the singers, keyboardists, bassist, guitarists are looking at you setting up your kit like "umm, hurry up" LOL I HATE THAT. They just plug in a Mic, or pull their amp out and plug in. For drummers, we have to get EVERY CYMBAL positioned just right, and if we don't, its like playing a bass without the E string(was gonna say G String LOL).

What about when you hit Pastor Joeybigbooty in the head wit a stick and he plays it off like it didn't hurt ...

What about when that little high hat piece gets loose and your stuck playing a whole song with an open high hat and if you even think about playing that wanna be ride/crash cymbal you finna get looks.

What about when your foot pedal gives out for good n' a youth ministry came cross country to see how you do worship.

what about when the resononant side of your snare breaks n' it sounds like you doin a bob marley reggae set .

What about when you forgot your floor tom mount.

what about when you popped a callouse n' you bleedin on the set.

What about when your sound man turns everything on EXCEPT YOUR KICK MIC in a 10,000 square foot auditorium.

What about when you no it wasn't your fault and everyone in bands looking at you like you messed up the timing. LOL

I hate playing on a set with no bottom heads on it. That is so sto' front!!!

What about those dang wood chips. Ya'll know what I'm talking about... the wood chips from your sticks are always all over the floor by the set. It looks like the chipmunks had an annual banquet that you didn't know about. The janitor's always looking at you like you're the junkiest person in the world. LOL

- packing/unpacking or set up break down of all the equipment
- people lying about how great there sets and when i get there it is like a 80's pearl power set combined with a 92' yamaha set and a cannon bass drum with no front head and a camber crash and crash ride

Well what about when people come from different churches to play ONE SONG and bring enough equipment for a 5-piece percussion ensemble to play.

And then when they get done playin' they don't evan bother settin' the home kit back up. And you spend the rest of the service settin' everything up.

Or when drumsticks just pop up missin'. Or another drummer comes and ACCIDENTLY takes your 6" zildjian A custom. And you have to wait 4 months b4 their church visits again.

I'm belong to a COGIC church, and I have all my life.  I hate when we visit other churches and their drum set is set up different or not tuned right.  I don't know if other demoninations are similar, but it's like they don't take the drums seriously.  They don't give you time to set up anything and they only want you playing on their equipment.  I don't know, maybe it's just Nebraska.  Does anyone else have that problem?

Yo,

The biggest thing for me is when I'm playing up a sweat... I'm blazing!!! Then next thing you know, some friends...mostly females, want to come up and say hi. Most of them do so by giving out hugs.....

Wait, then again. You know you have a true friend when you can say "don't hug me, I'm sweaty!" and they hug you anyway

The equipment thing is the worst...but what about when you start a song with a 4 click and no one starts with you!!! Then everyone in the church looks at you like you messed up....

Ragedy sets are the worst...I went to a church once with my choir and the set was soooo ragety I said to the chior "Ya'll sing well now a hear"!!! I did not play on that thing...

Or when the MD tells you that their drums there and either the set is booty or there isn't one there.....WOW

BOY YALL AH TRIP :D ! Well here's my list.

I hate playing on an old generic pearl kit that still has the FACTORY HEADS ON IT  !

I hate when the sound tech doesn't know what the H*** he or she is doing. Then later acts like everything is cool  ! This just makes you wanna hit'em  !

I hate when the praise and worship team wants to speed up a song with a drum machine :x .

I hate when catz say they sweet on the kit and you here them and they sound like  8O   .  Note: Don't say anything, let your works speak for you  .

i hate when the choir director trys to tell u how to play the song and they dont know what they are talking about.

i hate when u show up wit an mpc2000, or your laptop wit reason(for drum loops), and the sound tech dosent know how to run you through the house system, and u gotta go to the booth and do it yourself. or worse, they dont have a system and u gotta run your loops through a keyboard amp.

i hate when the drum kit is right by the mothers!!! you know they complain about everything.

i chew gum while i play. but i hate when the usher comes up to me with some tissue and tells me to spit out my gum.

i hate how drummers are underpaid at most churches. organist can get like 400 a week. but the drummers may make 50 a week. i feel if the organist gets 400, the drummer should get like 200.

...Well times are changing now. We're in sort of a new breed of drummers. There's technology assisting us, and we have different types of idiosyncracies from the old days. I still think that we should be patient. Where do we get off complaining about people who are less fortunate than us? And as a part-time A/V guy myself I can't help but be somewhat defensive about some things. It's cool to be turned off by certain things and people, but listening to some of the comments made so far.... we're starting to sound like superstars!!! Maybe some of you are, I don't know... The equipment and the resources I came up with were a blessing to me... and I'm grateful. However, no seemingly bad situation is going to make me trade in my humility any time soon!

Cool... I hate to sound extra snippy everybody. I think I said what I felt.... but I was probably having a semi bad day when I wrote it. Don't get me wrong... playing on an old busted up set makes me feel like" man why am I here" deep down, but like you, I still do it. Wussup Good People,

These are some things I find unfavorable:

1. Luggin' all your equipment around. I thank God that I even have gig bags for everything now, but I still look like a ninja turtle walkin' in with cymbals and sticks strapped to my back and pedals snares and a bench in my hands.

2. "Country boy" set-ups (no offense country folk) but it's crazy when you play at the churches where the seat is all low and the snare is tilted towards you at a 45 degree angle, and it's got a towel in it. I actually played on a set where the bass had a cut up egg crate (bedding), and a quilt, and some more foam to muffle the inside AND some kind rubber practice pad pushed up against the outside. And then the toms are facin' eachother and are all spaced out, not to mention all the heads are from like '72 (probably the same set they used on the chitlin' circuit) What gets me is that someone actually put a lot of time and effort into settin' it up like that. I mean have U ever thought of how much time it takes to put a towel in a snare?!?!?!? But the big thing is that most of the time, they're decent sets, they just need new heads and need to be set up properly. And whats really messed up is that if I set the drums up properly, the usual drummer will act like I just messed their set completely up. Thats how a lotta drummers grow stagnated and play the same way for 30 years...they dont wanna learn.

3. The time it takes to set everything up after you've lugged your stuff in.
With us, when they call up another choir, theres not much time to set up at all. I mean I dont even bring that much stuff but theres a few times we coulda sung a nice acapella praise first for the musicians to get hooked up. Dont just look at us crazy and try to start the song without us thats not decent or in order.

5. Lack of help with equipment from your choir or group. We're trying to get a little committee together in my college choir to help our musicians get our equipment around. I mean, if we're playing personal gigs and events, then we can handle it ourselves, but if you're gonna look at us funny for not bein' set up when you're ready to stand up and sing, then give us a hand.

6. Other drummers breakin' up your sticks and not offerin' to pay for em. I mean even if the owner of the sticks aint standin' behind you, you know that the stick U just broke aint yours. Atleast try and  find out who they belong to and pass along 4 or 5 dollars to em...somethin'.

7. When folk at with these lil' country set ups overtighten their stands, it's one thing to be set up WRONG...it's another thing to be WRONG and so tight that noone can fix it for you.

But all in all, I thank God for all these ups and downs, I mean we're the rhythm of the worship. We play the rhythms that flow through the hearts and minds of God's people. Now thats favor.

Been blame for everything which goes wrong in the service

The worse  is when the worship leader changes the song (tempo/groove) and does not get the required response from the congregation -  then turns on you with an angry face like you are the one reponsible.

Secondly I hate when people assume ownership of your sticks after you have borrowed it for some time.

bein a drummer for a good while u guys have really come up with all the things we really dont feel when playin.... in the more creative mindset of this generation i think the one thing that really urks me is when the M.O.M asks for suggestions with a musical number we practice it shed over it run it to death in our minds and to our ears... then come time for the gig its like we never even spent 2 n a half hrs getting the groove right with the fills or nothin... that right there bothers me to thee utmost!

the country kits are the worst as well but how bout when u go to a visiting church they have a pretty good setup tuned ok but they have cracked cymbals wit like a istanbul ride cymbal...turn to ya neighbor and say neighbor.......that aint right!    and that would be the day church ran a lil too long you had to run to wendys to make the 3:00 pm church bus ride but they left u, so u had no way of getting into the church to even grab ur resources...... which brings me to my next point

the deacons or trustees not giving you a key to the church... i mean we play for the lord most high but cant come to the church and practice....that aint right!

oh yeah one more thing.... piccolo snare drums are the worst!!

How about this for a country boy kit... a cymbal clamp hooked up to a straight mic stand and they call it a boom stand which has one of them old school cymbals made by Camber. Lord help us. LOL

Ohhh!!! This was really funny. I went to a church and their set didn't even have cymbal stands and this was a big church (could seat 1500+). My boy had to have someone put his crash on a drumstick and hold it in front of him. I still can't find that cymbal stand in the stores LOL.

robdown, you nutz. But for me its carriying all that stuff. I am starting to gigs with my snare, hats, and bass drum. Leave all that other stuff at the house, esp. if they aint paying worth nothing.

I hate when I'm treated like a second class musician when I get paid for doing gigs. I've played gigs when I've goten a whole lot less than everyone else for NO REASON! I just say praise God any way and go on about my bussiness.

Yall drummerz are funny!  I'm tripping because I use to be a drummer.  Picked up the bass and didn't turn back but I use to hate the same trash.  I hate when people directly relate their level of adrinaline (not spelled right) to the temp of the sound.  I be wanting to tell them "Look joker, just cause you all hyped cause you get to lead a song, don't me that I'm off beat."

Playing where there is jacked up gear, B8, ZBT, ZXT, Alphas, PSTs, cymbals and cheap barely holding on snares) with a wobbly throne that is on the ground. i'd be happier with a milk crate and a box of newspapers as a kit   .

Some folk can't help it and some don't try. I have a problem with the not trying.

I hate it when you just HAD TO have the runs at the exact moment you start clickin off the set.  I'm talking sweating before you even layed down the tempo.  To the point where you start slowing down the song because you can't hold it in.

Also when your bassist comes in late after a HUGE break in the song and everybody thinks you're trippin.

The things that gets me is when i bring my cymbals to church and people mess around after service and beat on my aax's like there is NO tomorrow. I'm like man chill becuase i know if my cymbals break none of you guys are going to cough up any money to replace them. Also when people rearrange your set (i know people play differently) and don't atleast try to put it back to where it was. Also, when the praise and worship team/choir starts singing in the wrong note they want to look at the musicians like we are wrong. The keyboard, organ, and drums don't lie when it comes to the right key. Don't look at us lol im out!!

Someone said it earlier on....and I have to AMEN it. I HATE 3/4 BEATS!!!!!!!!!!!!! In fact I hate them so much, I dont play them like 3/4

Also, having a song leader that is not experienced is frustrating. You can establish the beat, and he will kick it up or slow it down, and then you look stupid!!! That is not cool.

God Bless.

"Amazing Grace" is 3/4 time. You don't like that song? When you don't play those songs like 3/4, how does that work out for you? Actually, I'm not really sure what you're talking about. Please explain.

Yes. Amazing Grace is 3/4. But I do not play Snare Snare Bass Snare Snare Bass Snare Snare Bass. I will skip a snare beat, or substitute with a Bass beat. Amazing Grace is a slower song, I am talking about faster songs mainly, like the Windows of Heaven are Open. I stay in beat, but I just dont play 3/4. I hope I explained myself well enough. Skipping one Snare hit makes a huge difference in my opinion.

God Bless.

OK, but even though you may be skipping a snare beat, your time signature is still 3/4. It's inaccurate to say you're not playing 3/4 time just because you're skipping a snare beat.

In other words, in 3/4 time the quarter note still has 3 beats to a measure, regardless if that beat is the bass, the snare, the high hat, the cymbal, the cow bell or whatever. You're still counting "1, 2, 3" in your head. In your case, you've simply decided to play snare on the 3 only, instead of on the 2 and the 3. The time signature doe not change though.

I'm sure what you're playing probably sounds fine. I'm just explaining so that others learn the theory correctly.

You are exactly right. Sorry. I said it wrong. The song is still in 3/4. I am just choosing which to play. by playing on 1 & 3 it just changes the sound a bit, makes it more interesting in my opinion.

God Bless.

Cool, I like Amazing Grace with the snare on the "2". I'm not sure if that's what you meant.

Incidentally, I suppose a "rock" version of Amazing Grace could be played with a 4/4 time signature. I haven't tried it, but it makes sense in my head. Doing so would definitely take the folksy feel out of the song, making the older people in the church go  8O .

Cool, post it in a new thread. Your post would be great for leading into a discussion about time signatures. Maybe post the folksy version and the modern version if you're motivated.

1. sticks don't last long
2. after extended periods of fast playing u get blisters
3. other drummers breaking/damaging u're stuff and acting as if they did nothing wrong
4. going 2 other churches with beat up/un-tuned sets

5. everyone always wants u 2 teach them how 2 play, yet don't have the patience 2 wait, as if u learn 2 play over night
6. kids that think u're set is a toy, and parents that get upset because u chastise their kids
7. playing with an arrogant musician
8. playing behind people that cant sing and have no clue of tempo
9. constant cleaning...need i say more
10. something always has 2 be replaced...need i say more

Hers my thing, i agree with alot of it, but, hers what i say, if you love the talent of gift , which ever you deem necessary, i think if you enjoy the drums, lugging the drums around shouldnt be a hate! you should take what u need , if your not playing but maybe a few songs, like a high hat, bass drum, snare, and maybe a ride, or crash/ride , and a crash, dont take the whole kit, second if you hate lugging around get some drum bags, it will make it alot easier. Me personally i love to tear down and rebuild up my kit if i go to a ministry, because thats what it is...MINISTRY, look @ it like im going to give Christ praise , its not about me. I understand what alot of you mean, im not ignorant to it, but at the same time, thats just apart of drumming, if you hate it so much play bass, or play piano, theres are not as stressful as some of you claim. Some of you play for the wrong reasons, but im not here to judge anyone, i know for me I play for Christ and i find it a joy no matter how i feel.
But i do relate to alot of you guys here, one thing im facing now is that My pastor looks at me alot and trys to give sign language that im to fast or whatnot, when in reality im on point..
My NUMBER ONE THING IS THAT I DONT LIKE ARROGANT DRUMMERS, THOSE ARE THE ONES WHO MAY BE 7'0 FEET TALL BUT IN THE EYES OF CHRIST YO KNEES GONE BOW" HUMILITY IS  A SPIRITUAL GIFT.THE FIRST SHALL BE LAST AND THE LAST SHALL BE FIRST... but i didnt come here to preach....im just grieved because we as people not just musicians loose sight of what its all about sometimes...."piece"

i think we all understand that we are ministers, and that carrying our drums is a part of the ministry we do. but that doesn't mean we have to like it. who likes lifting heavy things at midnight after an exhousting service. but we still love doing it so we do...
for instance:  if you had to run 10 miles every time you were asked to preach, you would do it, do it in love, and love ministering, but that doesn't mean you would love the 10 mile run.
 feel me??
no body is loosing site of God's great work and ministry... or hwo blessed we are to have the opportunity to do something that we love soooooo much.

i loooooove doing gigs outside, even when it  is cold.- especially because you have to have good sound to do an outside concert, and most of the time that is what i've experienced
but i don't like doing  a gig outside in the cold and all of a sudden a  leader/ vocalist  in the band wants to do solos even though 1-we've never done them in the group, 2- it is cold  and everyone's muscles are tense , 3-we never talked about it or rehearsed it, 4- we play at warm inside venues all the time.
sorry... this just happened to me this weekend, and he just haaaad to pick the cold outside gig to do the "SURPRISE YOU ARE SOLOING NOW"!!! thing
  it was still fun though

2.Having to play on crappy rental or house kits(especially when they come in 22-12-13-16 sizes, hey club owners, not everybody on earth wants to play 80's hair meatl   :x )
3.plexiglass cages
4.the compliment:"you play very musical-for a drummer..."
