Help me out, what exactly are midi files used for?
-
Midi files describe musical performances. They describe things such as pitch and duration of notes, description of sounds, etc. So when you create a midi of a song you are creating a record with everything needed to play it back. Loosely speaking, the computer equivalent of a music sheet.
A MIDI-capable instrument (computer soundcard, keyboard) will know how to interpret the information and play the song back.
