he was possessed. But does anyone know the name of this song, or who sings it?

I know. I've been studying that video since it was posted.
[edit]
Hey! I just noticed that bass is a Warwick. I'mma have to try that with my fretless when I get it.

I just ran across it lastnight. I've transcribed half of it already. That little scale he throws in at 1:07 is difficult to hear everything, but you can adlib your own freestyle there.
-
I think the title that pops up is the song by TD Jakes, but I can't find an mp3 anywhere to confirm if it's the same one.
-
T.D. Jakes does this song from the Live from the Potters's House album. Its called "Let's just Praise the Lord" in Bb. Here is the link:http://music.barnesandnoble.com/search/product.asp?userid=Ql6LcqnBGE&EAN=74646954225&ITM=5

I have been learning this song for our church. After listening to this brotha, it made me seem like I'm on a short bus going to school. Brotha, this is wicked! It gives me something to work towards. I want to learn how to do those runs. God Bless Ya Toronto Finest!

BACE,
QUIT FRONTIN! IF YOU ALREADY TRANSCRIBE IT IN YOU OWN STYLE, THEN WHERE IS THE LINE CHART OR CLIP TO SHOW US HOW TO MAKE THAT RUN. GOD HAS BEEN DEVELOPING MY EAR TO HEAR RUNS LIKE THAT BUT THAT HELPS ME HEAR CLEARLY! I THINK WILL A CHART AND IF I KEEP LISTENING TO IT OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS, I'LL BE ON IT BY SUNDAY! PHIL 4:13
B3,

For the run he does at 1:07 I just throw in a slide (which is nothing) and keep going, but like I said I have only gotten through about half of the clip, well I'm to about 2:55 now, but in a few more days I should have it pretty close. Playing it fluidly and transcription are two different things. Once I build up the repetitions and get it together I will post it. I ain't scared.
-
They sound like triplets. Four groups to be exact. I can almost hear all the notes, but I know I won't be able to play it. My fingers don't move that fast yet.
I looked at his right hand to see how many beats he's playing then looked at his left hand to see the pattern. I'm almost certain they're triplets.
-
Those look like quads to me.
-
It looks like he's using 1-2-4 to me. The third finger doesn't look like it's playing anything...unless he's playing on another string. The rest are on the same string....at least that's what it looks like. The dern camera is moving too much.
-
Yea. Those have to be triplets. (16th note triplets...8th note triplets would be too slow) I know you can hammer-on notes, but it doesn't sound like it to me...plus his right hand isn't going across the strings. It's just going up and down.
Yea. I just counted the beats. he did the whole thing in 4 beats. If they were 16th note triplets it would be an even 24 beats. 16 notes would be too slow. I know that's more than 16 notes. He can't be doing quads, because that would be too many notes.
-
Ok. I think I got it, but if not, it's pretty close.
The first note is Db, and it goes up to Ab.
G------------------------------
D----------------------4-5-6--
A---------------4-5-7---------
E--------3-4-5----------------
B-2-3-5-----------------------
...and then reverse it....
I think I'm off a little, but it sounds pretty close. My fingers can't move this fast though.
-
Guys its so weird hearing you alll talk about that run that I did and the funny thing is that I dont even know myself  B3 i assume that you take lessons, cause you are putting that on tabs and I dont understand a lick!! Sorry I cant help you guys out, but if you are ever in Toronto, I can show you the run!

His fingers aren't using the D string in that run.
-
That's why I said it's close. Actually, his second finger comes down and hits the Ab, so I modified the end a little, because I couldn't see/hear those notes clearly.
-
i cant hear a lick, only choir and drums. perhaps i need external speakers..
A?
sure looks good though
-
I may be wrong B3 but I don't think that bass is in standard tuning. I think at least 1 string is strung differently.
-
Yea. It looks like it, but I'm just assuming that I can't hear the middle notes clearly. It seems that the Ab, should be farther down the string. I even listened to that part over and over just to make sure that top note was Ab, because like you said, it didn't look like his hand was moving the the bottom string, until I saw that second finger slip down.
Anyway, it doesn't matter really, we won't get it exact. I think it's too fast to hear clearly. I'd like to see what you came up with...not that I'd be able to play it though....My fingers are too slow.
-
I'm not gonna even try to touch that run if I don't know what it is, I will just come up with my own for that part, which will be as far from the original as possible. I've been really getting frustrated over it the last few days. I've devoted all of my bass practice to that one video, and I have an anniversary to get ready for and an outdoor festival. But looking over and over at it, there is noway those notes belong in the area where they are being played, unless he's a magician.
-
Yo Bacefingers, dont get frustrated over that run, just polay it how you feel to play. When I played it was something that came naturally, I didnt practice it I just felt that way right then and played it. Its better that you dont try to copy it note for note, but just add you own "touch" to it.
-
God's speed personafied I guess. I even broke out my transcription program for that clip which slows down everything in the same key. I hardly EVER use it (and haven't in almost 2 years) because most times I can hear what is being played. But even with that software it still wasn't decernable. I can't explain what I heard but it was almost clandestine and something came to my mind that that run is between you and God. And there it shall belong. At this particular time it's not for me to know.
-
...and not for me to play.
Anyway, TorontosFinest, I haven't had any formal training. I'm like you: I play ear. I don't even know all the notes on the neck yet. I do know a good amount of theory, since I play keyboard, and that's how I approached the bass, at first. I just transcribed what I knew to the bass.
If you want to learn to tab and some theory, just read the stickies at the top and stick around. We're all learning together.
-
Thanks B3, I really appreciate that!
-
You B3, I left my axe at church (don't ask it was a long Sunday) but any way, I'm gonna work on that. I'll start with whole notes and work my way up!
-
That's actually a pretty simple pattern. It'd take me a while (months) to work up the speed to anything near what he did though.
You know God showed me how to do this a few weeks ago. I was thinking like "Wow...That's it!". I was doing something, but I didn't know what. Anyway, I tried it again the next day and couldn't do it. It just sounded like trash. I guess it's kind of like what BACEFINGERS said, He just wanted to show me where I could be, if I stay on the right path.
-
Just so you guys know and you probably already know this but the intent was never to get it exactly, but to be able to take the concept and adopt it. I've down that so many times when a kat could do something that I couldn't, I just got it as close as I could and then worked it into my routine. The deal is, it's a great run, right now it looks super difficult but if God deals for you the way he deals with me. In two weeks to a month, I'll be doing it so much, it'll be corny! Not to sound cocky or anything my my faith is super, Phil 4:13, God is no respecter of persons, Mark 11:24 What things soever we desire, when we pray... Again, I apply the word to everything and so I'm able to boast in the Lord. I'll get it and let you know when I do. YOU WILL NEVER HEAR ME SAY THAT I CAN'T DO SOMETHING ON THE BASS! DEATH AND LIFE ARE IN MY TONGUE... WATCH ME...

That's funny. When I sit at home and practice God would blow me away by having me do things that I KNOW I can't do. But here it is, happening. Get to a practice, nothing. Can't even make it happen. Later, at home, there it is again. In the past, my left hand was NEVER able to line up with my right hand, regarding speed and timing. But there it is, locked. At whatever speed I fret with my left hand, my right fingers would cover the note. Sometimes, two or three times if I'm not careful. At one time, I even heard a third finger join in. I came to the conclusion that this was just between God and me, not for display...yet. I just gotta be patient and see where God is going with this.
Tony
PS - I like the video. I really like smoothness of that bassist. That's the playing style God is bringing me up in.
-
Anyone have that run at 2:56 of the video?
-
Big up to my boys Thomas on keys and Damon on organ.
Toronto .... Damon is excellent on the organ & keys. I enjoy listening to him when we fellowship with them. We, Fishers of Men Deliverance ministries, were just fellowshiping with them last Friday at their street meeting. It was awesome.
-
Wow Lady Bass! I was just in Baltimore last week and was with Damon on Thursday night. I was supposed to go to their meeting on Friday but I was too late. Do you play bass? How was the meeting? Drop me an email.

I've only been playing for a few months, but the way you played that song has inspired me to work harder. I watch the video at least once a day and I learn something new each time. I love the sound of your Warwick( I plan on purchasing one win I get better). I have 2 questions for toronto.
what type of amp were you using on the video?
What advice or instruction could you give to a rookie?

Hey there Anointed Strings, thanks for the comments. As far as your two questions go, first, the amp that I was a Peavey. I cant remember the module but all I know is it wasn't that good. Secondly, the advice that I would give you is..................................... ......
Pray to God that he will use you to play for "his" glory and not for people to say that you are a great bass player. We have a motto in our Youth Department, "pleasing God and not man, for me to live is Christ"! If you trust God and be sincere, he will give all the tools and skills that you need to be master your craft. Now, dont think that you dont have to practice, you "have to practie". Make sure that you learn all of the major scales and apply them to your playing. DO NOT try to learn things too quicky as it would sound sloppy and messy. Take your time and be patient!
-
Toronto's Finest,
Thanks for the advice. I have been working on learning the major scales. Is there a such thing as over practicing? I have such a desire to learn that I at times become consumed with my practice. My desire is to glorify God through my playing, but I want to be able to offer him the best praise that I possibly can. I believe in a spirit of excellence. So, I practice alot. I work on my scales, I practice with the other musicians at my church, I attempt to play along with the radio. All in all, I really want to work on my technique with both hands. What advice can you give me about technique.
-
As far as technique goes the only thing that I would say is to take your time developing finger strength and dexterity. I t is very important that your fingers are able to move along the fretboard freely and that you r use all of your fingers on your left hand. Over the years I have noticed that there are many bass players that do not use there pinky finger when playing. I know that it is something that you have to get used to, but it is very important that you do use it. When it comes to playing things like "shout music" and very fast runs you will see how important that it is to use it. Another tip I would give you is learn all types of techniques. Dont just limit yourself to the traditional two finger playing style, but learn other ways such as slapping, plucking, thumping, two-hand tapping, muting and three finger playing. This will be beneficial if you ever have to solo, the reason being you will have so may ways to solo you will no t be limited to play just one particular style.
I hope I have given you somethings to think about!
-
Thanks for the advice again. I have been working on my finger strength and my pinky is coming along. I may seem weird but I'm having trouble with speed on my picking hand. When I attempt to use two fingers my rhythm is somtimes thrown off.
-

Very, very good point. I deliberately neglect this advice at times to do things like string quivers (vibratos). I would use my strongest finger, the ring one. But when extensive transitions start flowing thru real fast, I use all my fingers so I can keep my eyes on the MoM. I'm thinking about giving up a lot of those vibratos so I can keep the pinky in play. The pinky development should be more important.
