Title: how do you apply music theory knowledge in songwriting?

greetings!  i'm learning music theory.  how can i apply the things i already know? i know how chords are formed, the scales, sharps and flats, but i don't know how to apply them in writing a song.  any suggestions?  thanks to all :o
