Are the strings numbered from the bottom up or top down??

Example:  on a 4 string Bass, would the E string be 1, A String be 2, etc... or the opposite way??

B    5       low    
E    4
A    3
D    2
G    1
C    0       high


string names can differ due to altered tuning but the actual string number remanes the same.

4 E

2 D

i couldn't tell u how to number B3's 8 string bass, but what i did tell 4his glory was the standard string numbering for a 4 string bass with the 2 added strings (6 string) seeing that i play a six.  Please do correct me if i'm wrong cause i would hate to be giving wrong info out there especially to a budding bassist.

B'3 maybe u can add some light since you own a 8 string.

I have no idea, what the standard is. I'll look it up and learn it though.

I usually number them from 1-8 starting with the lowest, F#, string. I think I remember seeing your way posted somewhere else before though.
