Ok on another board we started talking about choir members that don't watch the director...
I HATE it with a passion, you want to see me get ugly? Miss my "Q" and see what happens  I turn into something, who knows what. That burns me UP, I tell them, ya'll don't run red lights all day...,do you? LEt Twinkie miss doc's cue, It was NIGHT NIGHT. Can't take it.. Tell me your thoughts...
-
well Bishop I didn't know it burned you up that much!! haha
anyway...just kidding
Yes, yes, yes, it is nerve-wrecking!!! I know that people think because it's a church choir that they don't have to take it seriously (well, at least in our choir). They come in late, come to the choir stand putting on their robe, and the conductor lets them. I know that it starts with the director but it just makes me cringe (did I spell that right?) looking at it.
I feel that if singing is not a gift God has given you, then you should ask God what it is and join that specific ministry. We have too many people that just want to sing in the choir......but don't realize that it is a ministry that should be taken seriously.
Please give insight!!!!!

Right, then when you put them out and put them on silence, your mean and you don't have God and you are full of the devil, trust me I'm 24 and I think that I have heard close to all of it, and I think it's because even though I'm this young, I've been told I act like an old preacher, and the Old folk didn't play all that madness, and so this is why 30 and 40 year olds think I'm out of place, so imagine what I was going through when I was 11 and 12 teaching the choir...
RIGHT!!!
-
Yes I agree it aggrivates me as well. I have thrown things at people for not paying attention.
-
bishop2, people don't understand that, that's what these choirs need these days, that's why some of them are walking around and sounding horrible, because they don't have the discipline they need, that's why I always tell my cousins, we need a director like me, because I admit I can get mean, although I try not to, but I'm ready to take this choir to the next level and some people need to stop playing and get serious in every ministry, not to impress people, but to operate in excellence.
-
True... This not only agrivates me but has anyone had a musician that would not follow your direction? Not because they missed the que but becaus e they just didn't feel like it.
-
Yes, musicians like that are full of the devil... discord, pure discord.

8O ....DUCK!

It's not a pleasant experience but if somebody messes up I just get them a sign to move on and let them know that everybody makes mistakes. I believe that when I messed up Christ looked beyond my faults and saw my needs, so I believe in looking beyond that. Yeah, it's not a pleasant experience but I just believe in handling with the attitude that says everyone has messed up and we should look beyond that.
-
Like Madea said "You gotta watch, you gotta watch".
-
I always remind them to "watch me, watch me." My famous words are, "Don't direct yourselves." That's what I'm here for.

Trust me I understand what you mean but sometimes it goes well beyond simply making a mistake when you have members chewing gum like a cow when it is well known that it is forbidden, or while you are teaching lets say the altos the sopranos want to carry on a conversation, or when you tell the band to come down some so you can hear, and three words later they are louder then they were when you told them to stop, as you can tell I have some things that easily get on my nerves. Luckily our choir is moving away from this and we are becoming a much better choir, Sister-T mentioned in another post that God is a God of order, and so we have to be a choir of order. Hitting the wrong note once or twice I can forgive these are mistakes but things like I listed above are not, peace!

bishop,
I feel you on this......I thought I was the only one who felt like this. So let me just shout unto God with a voice of triumph "I'm Not By Myself- Glooorayyy!!! Okay now that I have gotten that out of the way. The musicians are really trying, because I'm cueing (?) them to play a certain song (this is during rehearsal) and they start playing something else. I'm like 8O WHAT IN THE WORLD IS GOING ON!!! I just realized why typing this that I really wanted to say something else. Any ways, I asked the musician during one of the songs to just break the music while we sing and she goes I don't understand?!?! I'm like the DEVIL IS A LIAR, you played with the cream of the crop (you say) yet you don't know how to break the music in the midst of a song? Whats wrong and why we gots to deal with so many ATTITUDES. I'm like we must intercede for one another because folks aren't always Spiritually Filled.
God Bless!

Yes that is nerve racking when a choir member doesn't watch. Many times they are too busy looking at the congregations response to the music and that is okay to a certain degree. today many people have an overal lack of respect for authority and feel they know everything. Order should be everywhere especially in God house. I tell my choir the only way we can be one choir and one sound is to pay attention to the leader. God will not be pleased with a mess. Make a joyful noise unto the Lord!

Being the director of music/keyboardist/pianist I am the only one with real knowledge of music at my church, so I'm training members in directing the choir and because the choir doesn't have confidence in the director that is before them, they all are watching me. But of course if a mistake is made it is mine and the director's fault. So, the point is finally getting across that they should not watch me, WATCH THE DIRECTOR! It's getting better, but it is sometimes laughable. I will watch the director give the cue to start singing and, as I call it, they slide into a song or different parts of a song. You know, never hitting that first word quite strong enough, but by the second or third word of a song, they are right on point.
But after a long discussion, we are working better together. But I know for me the biggest part is not excepting change and if you deviate from the way you sing a song, such as repeat a part 3 times instead of 2, well you've thrown them for a loop, but mainly because THEY DO NOT WATCH!
But, be encouraged. None of us are in this alone!!!
Be blessed and know that if I were in any of your choirs I'D BE WATCHING YOU!!!!

Evangelist, pull him over to the side and tell him about the problem that you are having, and if this doesn't work, let me know and I will give you SEVERAL ideas more! Bishop Lamar Cole

yeah!
that really urks me. it is of vital importance that every body is on one accord and should trust that the director is in tune with god. so the musicians might have wanted to go in one direction as well as the choir but the holy ghost could be leading the director in a completely different direction. so ya gotta keep your focus in a sense on the director
-
I can sympathize with all of you. I am the youngest in our senior choir and I am 44 yrs old, I was chosen to be the director , a calling that I do not feel I have but I try but they don't. I try to be respectful to the elderly so most of the times I just let them do what they want and I just sing my heart out to God. I love to sing and want the choir to sing with some umph!! but I guess if umph is not in them they can't. >:( :'( ???
-
I feel the anger in the room....lol.
I am a choir director and I have learned to over dramatize my directing to the point to where you can be in the audience and know where i want to go next. I refuse to be put on the spot and haven't had an issue with musicians who just don't want to. The only issue i have are with certain musicians here at school who don't look up to see any cues at all, so if I feel like changing anything, I can't unless I yell to them, and that's not professional

Man, man, man, man, man...............I FEEL U, I FEEL U, I FEEL U, I FEEL U!!!!!! That gets on my LAST nerve!!!! I dont know why people feel that dont have to pay attention when they sing in the choir. i just dont get it. U may tell them, "keep your eyes on me........i might do something different........." but do they pay attention? NO!!!!!!! at least thats how it is with my choir. maybe they dont pay attention to me because i'm young and they figure that i dont know what im talking about. its hard being 19 trying to direct a bunch of stubborn 40 and 50 year olds.
