Title: Progression Practice Routine
Post by: T-Block on January 10, 2006, 01:44:42 PM
I don't know if I posted this already, but here is a routine you can practice every time you get to a keyboard to get you used to playing  in all keys.  Don't miss a key now, alright?  It doesn't matter what key you start at, but I recommend starting at C.  Here goes nothing:

Progression wise, I suggest practicing 7-3-6-2-5-1 the most cuz that is a common progression.  Any time you want to modulate to another key, the best way to do it is by playing the 4 chord of your new key with the 5th of your new key in the bass:

Key C

C-C / D-E-G-C (1)
C-C / G-C-D-E
C-C / Ab-C-D-F

T-Block that was a great post. I haven't been playing very long and this type of practice routine will give me something structured to practice. I'll no longer just sit at the piano and TRY to figure out different songs or chord progressions.  Thanks again and God Bless.

T-block thanks for the lesson you submitted, but being a beginner I don't know what the progressions should sound like.  So inturn I don't know if I'm doing it right.  I found this file on Gospelkeyboard  Title "progressions in c" http://www.gospelkeyboard.com/files/play.php?id=003330 could you:

1.  Tell me if this follows what you're teaching/showing us here

2.  If so break it down

3.  Tell T-block keep on blessing us

Thanks for everything you bless us with :o :o ;) ;D :)

A couple for question for T-Block or anyone who can help?

A couple of keys through me off. Please help

First in the key of D why would it be G# in the walk from the 2 to the 5? It not part of the key and the 4th wasn't sharp in C during the walk.

Second in the key of G, Why is the 6 an Eb instead of E.

I understand what you are doing. I just don't understand why.

Those are just some typos, I'll fix that right away.  I typed this up so long ago I hadn't really noticed if there were some errors or not.

In D, that 4 should be a G.  In G, that 6 should be an E.

It should be straight now.  I was hoping that you would try to transpose it on your own, but have this page as a reference if you got stuck.  Thanks for pointing out the errors for me.

Hello T-block

Did you get a chance to listen to the progression "Progression in C" I posted in the media center.  Just a little more background on my question.  I don't understand the playing of progressions enogh to ask a straight out and to the point question, but this is what I "think I understand, and PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong"

-progressions follow this format (1)M (2)m (3)m (4)M (5)M (6)m (7) dim (8/1)M  ()= the degree in the scale

-so if I'm going to play a 2-5-1 I would play Dm---->G---->C

-and I would play that in whatever inversion that would allow minimal movement as possible

I'll wait for your response, and remember I believe int the K-I-S-S (KEEP IT SIMPLE SAINTS) God bless and thanks for everything.

Yes, I did.  All i can say about that is it is not an example of 7-3-6-2-5-1.

Yes and no. Yes, the bass notes D-G-C are correct.  No, it has nothing to do with the chords, although those chords are fine.

You see, a progression gets its name solely from the bass notes.  What chord you play with it is totally up to you, but the basic way is just like u did above, play the type of chord that goes with each scale degree.  You follow me?  When you see progression, think bass notes.

I'm guessing you want me to translate the chords into chord symbols, right?  Well, I'll do it for the first key, and you can just change the root note for all the other keys:

Key C

C-C / D-E-G-C (1) = Cadd9
C-C / G-C-D-E = Cadd9
C-C / Ab-C-D-F = Dm7 (b5)/C
C-C / G-C-D-E = Cadd9
/ D, E
B / A-D-F (7) = Dm/B
E / Ab-C-D-G, F (3) = E7 (b5) (b9) *rename the Ab to G# (not sure about this chord symbol)
A / G-C-E (6) = Am7
D / Ab-C-D-F (2) = Dm7 (b5)
E / G-C-E = C/E
F / Ab-C-D-F = Dm7 (b5)/F
G / G-C-E (5) = C/G
G / F-G-C-D = Gsus7
G / F-G-B-D, C = G7
C / D-E-G-C (1) = Cadd9

Modulation chord to Db: Ab / Gb-Ab-Bb-Db = Gbadd9/Ab

Does that work for ya?  I hope all of those are correct, there are still some chordss that I am not sure how to name, so I just name them the best I can.  Please forgive any mistakes.

I'm a bass player by heart, but I play around with the keys every once in a while. But, here is a midi.

Hi All,

I only started  to have a look recently at this gospel chord practice (very nice progression by the way)

Towards the end , there seems to be a sort of walk up from the 2 chord to the 5 (so 2 - 3 - 4 -5 in fact)chord and i was wondering if someone could confirm/explain how this work and the logic behind the choice of chords (that would help me applying to other keys)

Thanks a lot in advance.

Here are the chords being used there:

D / Ab-C-D-F (2) = Dm7 (b5)
E / G-C-E = C/E
F / Ab-C-D-F = Dm7 (b5)/F
G / G-C-E (5) = C/G

The logic behind the choice of chords here is mostly experimentation and sound.  Someone was looking for a certain sound and experimented with chords until they found something they liked.  The theory can explain what the chords are, but it can't tell you exactly how these chords worked out like this.  Since they do work, just take it and run with it, LOL.

Thanks T-Block.

I think i understand how the chords work now.
So am i right in thinking that this is to link the 2 and 5 chords with  3-4 (so walking up basically)?

The reason i ask is that i find it easier to memorize a progression with the number system. So in this case, i can think of the progression as:

1 (with quick 1 - 4minor) - 7-3-6-2-3-4-5-1 with suspended movement at the end.

So then i can add the
1-4minor trick (on the first 3 chords)
The 2 to 5 chord walk up
The Suspended chord on the 1 (at the end)

to my box of tricks i can use on other progressions!

Hope it makes sense :-)

All of that is exactly right, and it makes perfect sense, well to me anyways.
