Title: Weighted or Non-weighted?
Post by: on February 21, 2004, 03:59:20 PM
Which do you prefer to play on weighted keys or non-weighted keys?  There are some keyboardists I know that say they play piano but prefer non-weighted keys.  Personally I prefer weighted because I want that push when I do all my runs.

Non-weighted seem a little too flimsy . . . like you are playing a plastic toy keyboard or something. But I imagine you can get used to anything, and what matters is that you play for the Lord! Be Blessed . . . BBoy  8)

I haven't been playing that long, but I think that weighted keys would make your articulation better over time - your weaker fingers would develop better and the resistance might make it easier on your wrists -  the transition to sytnth type keys ( might be wrong here) would be easier with a little practice.

Weighted keys of course. I play a keyboard that has weighted keys. And, it makes your fingers stronger.

Unfortunately..I prefer nonweighted at this time.  Only because, at first, all I ever played was a  portable keyboard and now I'm playing a digital piano (with unweighted keys).  I didn't realize until recently that I really need to begin playing with weigthed keys to make my fingers stronger.  I would go to another one of my sister churches and play their acoustic piano and my fingers would be KILLING me, my whole arm would be hurting and I would just tire out.  That's when I knew that I had a problem.

I prefer the non-weighted action of the Hammond organ.  I also prefer Hammond's "waterfall" keys to "divingboards".

I think that there are very few people who are virtuoso on both the Hammond and piano.

Since I grew-up playing organ, I find the action of a piano slow and painful.  My hand position is all wrong for piano.  Organ is flat hand.  I use the same finger to play multiple notes.  I keep my hands (fingers) wide.  I wipe notes using my finger-tips and palms.  I drop my wrists.  I use strange fingerings for speed and also for "legato" playing.

That's just because your fingers are weak.

Gross. I even curl my fingers on organ. It just feels better. A dude I met last year during a concert we had commented on my fingers being curled. He thought it was neat, even though he plays better than me.

Can we say CTS (carpal tunnel syndrome) waiting to happen? I play multiple notes only with my thumb....sometimes.

Wiping is cool, but you "DROP YOUR WRISTS???" Yep. CTS. *praying* In the name of JESUS, protect his hands right now!

Well I guess you can get used to anything. ;) Actually, I know a lot of people that do this, I used to but my hands started to hurt. I guess I wasn't used to it yet, but all jokes aside, you should read this:

I really doesnt matter to much to me but I like piano better than a weighted keyboard. Weighted keyboards even though they try still does not feel like a real piano to me.

I ENJOY THE BEST OF BOTH. IT JUST DEPENDS ON THE SITUATION AND WHAT YOU,RE PLAYING.  BUT IF YOU GET TIRED FROM PLAYING ON WEIGHTED KEYS YOU SHOULD PROBABLY USE THEM MORE AND PRACTICE MORE SCALES BECAUSE THAT A SIGN THE YOU'RE PLAYING TECHNIQUE NEED SOME IMPROVEMENT. PLAY WITH YOUR FINGERS CURL IS THE PROPER TECHNIQUE FOR PLAYING NO MATTER HOW GOOD YOU ARE. PLAYING WITH CURLED FINGERS INSTEAD OF FLAT FINGERS WILL IMPROVE YOUR PLAYING SPEED PLAYING POWER.
