Title: Songs that rock da church.....
Post by: sjonathan02 on January 28, 2006, 10:20:16 PM
With folks going on and on about songs that'll put a  congregation under their pews (or seats) I ask this:

What song gets your church going?

*side bar* Peach, we already know your answer.     *end side bar*

At my old church, it was "Let's just praise the Lord" (T.D. Jakes) and "Press towards the mark" (Norman Hutchins)

But, I think the all-time-will-rock-any-church-anywhere song is.......

ALL HAIL KING JESUS

Your thoughts?

"Come Thou Almighty King" - Timothy Wright
"Perfect Praise" - Soul Children of Chicago
"Do Not Pass Me By" (shooowwwwer down....anooiiint me lord....etc)

GOTTA CATEGOTIZE THIS ONE FOR YA...

BEST THROWBACK:  "Changed" - Walter Hawkins.  When I listen to that original recording, I do not think that they even knew the impact that that song would make on peoples lives and on Gospel music as a whole.

BEST DUSTY:  "Call Him Up" - Provided that it is done CORRECTLY, you definitely need to summon the ushers and nurses with this one.

BEST LATE 90'S CUT:  "For Every Mountain" - Kurt Carr.  The reflective nature of this song can make the most stubborn person cry.

BEST NEW MILLENIUM CUT:  "You Are the Living Word" - Fred Hammond & RFC.  Breaks the whole deal down like no other.

BEST 2006 CUT:  ??????????????????????  You tell me...

I'm feeling you on the catagorizing so let's see.

for throwback, I'm good with "Changed" that song is a monster!! Now, I don't know if it's a throwback, but I also love "Marvelous" by Walter Hawkins

forgive me, but I don't know what a 'dusty' is

Late 90's cut: I can understand your choice, but what about "Stand" by Donnie Mac?  :D

I'm going to have to disagree with you on the best new millenium cut being, "You are the living Word" I'd have to give that title to "Praise is what I do"

And, we are waaaay to earlier into '06 to even answer that question.

And, then there's "My help (cometh from the Lord) by the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir which sent my old church into a frenzy...during a funeral.

Our choir did "Faithful Is Our God" by Hezekiah a couple of weeks ago and BROUGHT THE HOUSE DOWN!!!!

Also "I'm Healed" by Jonathan Nelson/Donald Lawrence is also a favorite!!

And my youth choir recently sung "Psalms 27" by Walt Whitman and the Soul Children of Chicago (from the late 1980s) and the audience was falling over in their seats!!!

Psalm 27 got my youth choir through many dry Sundays back then!  WHEW!

Milton Brunson's "THE HOLYGHOST".....CLASSIC!

Yesterday's theme song was "SOMEHOW I MADE IT".

And who could forget "THEY GOT THE WORD!"

NO THE WINNERS ARE "All In His Hands" and "Jesus Can Work It Out".

See, there is no way will get you up out of your SEAT, but it won't make your hat fall off with 10,000 bobby pins in it!

But if you say "Whatever the problem" more than four times in a black church in Bb, IT'S OVER!  And please don't strike a fancy preacher/shout chord right before the choir sits down! You will make the Director (if he or she was feeling it - as most do on that song) hurt themselves and 90% of the congregation!

Now this song has folks going into fits before the song is over, and if you are pentecostal and believe in dancing, this will put you into a shoutfest for sure...

Talk it over with Jesus...

When in doubt, in despair, any time anywhere, talk it over with jesus...

"Perfect Praise" always laid my choir members out at my old church.  I would usually have maybe 3 or 4 (out of 12-15) left singing when we were done.

And around Easter we would do "Jesus Rose" by Milton Brunson  Whew!  just move the chairs out of the way.  HEY HE LIVES!

Praise him
Praise him
Jesus
Blessed Saviour
He's worthy to be praised.

OH YEAH!  JESUS ROSE still messes the saints up EVERY Easter with Kevin Davidson's HE GOT UP!

And for this year, I've already taught the first part of Youthful Praise's HE ROSE (with Kirvy from Hezekiah Walker's choir on lead)!  If you don't shout after that one..........something is really wrong!

If God is dead is an old Margret Dourox song (I JUST KILLED HER NAME)

One of the lines says:

If God is dead, WWHHHHHHAAAAATTTTT makes my life worth living, I'm glad I know, he lives, heeee lives he lives, heeeee lives he lives he livessssss....

Let the Redeemed of the Lord by (I think) Florida Mass(?) USed to KILL the Baptist church I played for every time we sang it (EVEN IF WE SANG IT THE WEEK BEFORE)

Come Let Us Worship The Lord In The Beauty Of Holiness...  Another one that used to kill
New Hope BC!!!

Did anyone name the classic, Safe in His arms by Milton Bruson and the Tommies, That was another killer..

BISHOP STOP!  Do you know that even at the "funeral parlor" that I call a church home, we can break out and say "Come let us worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness...." and hats will fly!?  Well, maybe two hats....three on a good Sunday.....but that's better than the usual zero.

The choir sung this song the Sunday before last and the Temple was TORE UP for at least 10mins.  Folks running, bucking, hollin and that included the choir.  It's the all time church rocker!

Yet, I would like to submit another two. Remember "Call Him Up"? That would have the church in a stupor.  "Call Him Up and tell 'em what you whaaaaaaaaat!" LOLOL Whew!
The other...... "Genesis" Now those of you that haven't heard this song, if your choir can MASTER the techniques of this song, then you'll can call 'em to the alter, baptize 'em, cut of the lights and lock the doors 'cause church is OVER!!!!!!

Be Blessed
The Bishop

Ok, THAT right there!!  Somebody put me in B#...:

1,2,3 KICC
1,2,3 DIP
1,2,3 SLIDE

I heard the version that was on Kelly's ablum (intentional) w/Joe Ligon.  GLOOOOORRRRRRAAAAAYYYYY!!!!

I guess no one around here has ever heard of a little song called..."MY SOUL HAS BEEN...ANCHORED IN THE LORD"?????

                                                 a killa that'll thrill ya. ;)

Im with you Sax.  "Tho the winndddds keep on blowin in my liiiiiiiifee...".  Yeah that song is hot.

I remember in Iraq, I Will Bless the Lord by Byron Cage and Psalms 24 by Shekinah Glory blew the roof off.

Im surprised this thread has gone 3 pages and nobody mentioned "No Greater Love" as a throw back.  I know hardly anyone sings the FIRST part lol, but the vamp always gets them.

But, I think the all-time-will-rock-any-church-anywhere song is.......

ALL HAIL KING JESUS

Your thoughts?

This sounds oh so familiar... ::) and you know I agree with you.

Is this the same song???

Whatever the problem, I put it all in His hands
I know, He can solve them, I put it all in His hands
This and that, I put it all in his hands
This this and that I put it all in his hands
This this this and that, I put it all in His hands

No matter how great or small, He's the master of them allllllll

I put it all, yessss I put it all...
in His hands
In His hands...

Then it breaks into shout music???

Yep...you got Cosmopolitan's version and Florida Mass Choir's version (there's a slight difference in lyrics (I think it's one line) in each of their versions).

:)

I love that song, but the best artist/group to cover that song had to have been Cosmopolitan hands down!! :)

Who wrote "There Is No Way" (I don't know it) and "Genesis"(I like that song)?

I know you all remember T. Whitfield's "I Shall Wear A Crown".  That's a classic that our church can hear all day......the choir can't finish the song without cryin'.

Percy Bady wrote "There Is No Way" which was originally recorded by Rev. Milton Brunson & The Thompson Community Choir. It's also been covered by Atlanta Centennial Choir and Ricky Dillard.

And a friendly FYI that Thomas Whitfield song was titled "Soon As I Get Home" :)

CALL HIM UP!!!

Well, if CALL HIM UP is what you call a "song", then I will hereby declare that work it out is the "Black Church National Anthem", which puts it at the top of every chart imaginable.

*licking my tongue out and RUNNING for cover!*

I don't think you have the authoriTIE to declare a "Black Church National Anthem."

Besides... everybody knows the National Black Church Anthem is Call Him Up.  DUHHHHH!   ::)

C'mon... who hasn't still found themselves bopping their heads and singing, "Just can't stop praisin His name, I just can't stop..." four hours after they last heard it???!!!!!

True...I still loose my mind when I direct that one (ain't that right LadyWiz...LOL)!

But WORK IT OUT still sends people under the pews and it never seems to get old...even the Re-mix redefines it as THE gospel classic.

I'm kinda starting to feel the same way about "I Can Go to God in Prayer!"

Ohhh that's Completely Yes
and yes that is the Call Him Up. I was bumping to work on that one yesterday.

One song we used to do was Look where He's brought me from, look where He's brought me from, brought me out of darkness, into the marvelous light, look where He's brought me from.
Drive: Glad He brogught me out, so glad He brought me out

Look where He brought me from still rocks at gphmbc too!

At one point though, when it would be those times when it was pull a song out of a hat, we would all sigh and  ::) when we heard the intro, and I would cut that song so short directing it some times, because we had worn it out.  Now one year when I had went back to my home church they pulled it out cause I was there and wanted me to direct.

Another song was, you should be a witness, why don't you tell somebody, don't be ashamed to be a witness for the Lord

Vamp:
Sops: you should be a witness for Jesus, you should be a witness for the Lord
Altos: you should be a winess
Tenors: stand up and be a witness, stand up and be a witness
