sabian.....the drummer for the rolling stones is good ol' charlie watt. he is a strong believer that when you hit the snare, nothing else should be making any noise so he holds his right had up on the two and four. it kinda looks wierd when you first see it. kenny ARONOFF is how his last name is spelled. lol another solid drummer is ndugu chancler.

Yeah... Charlie Watts. And thanks for the correction on the spelling of Aronoff.

Hey guys,
Can someone tell me what "pocket" means?
I'm not too familiar with sayings & terms on this forum & tried the search the forum but couldn't find anything... So as I was going through different threads I figured that "pocket" means "groove"? Obviously this thread proves me wrong.
& while we're at it. If there are others I should know about please let me know.
Sorry for kind of derailing.
-
No. Your right; pocket sort of means groove. A pocket drummer would describe a drummer who makes the simplest rythem or beat make some one wish they were on a dance floor so they could cut loose, ya know?
-
Yor Mama!!!!! :P
-
Nope Im wrong! lilbens Mom !!!!! :?

Pocket is the point most comfortable time playing of a particular song... played a lot of times slightly behingd the beat but still in time.
To have great pocket you have to learn to play "in front" of the beat to "PUSH" a song. "On top" of the beat to lock it down but hopefully not make it too stiff and "behind" the beat to make it "Greasy/Funky/Dirty". You also have to had a great understanding of the sub-division of the quarter note.
Groove is the feel of a song.
Two totally different yet connected things.
I defined this here back around Sept-October in a thread.

id say questlove, chambers, and gadd

see, what i don't understand is why people can say that people like dennis chambers are masters of the groove. you almost never see him just straight groove. that is just my opinion. i still think he is an amazing drummer but i think of him as more of a chops drummer... :)
-
sonny emory
jabo starks
clyde stubblefield
the drums for the legendary motown funk brothers
uriel jones
bennie benjamin
Richard "Pistol" Allen

Correction. People only pay attention to his chops. Even when he is playing a song that is stretching out he is always grooving. He establishe the groove so strong in the onset that it underies evertything. That i s why people like to play with him.
Dennis was also the house drummer for Sugarhill records ths foundation of hip-hop. And let's not forget the Parliament Funkadelic, which he joined at 17 years old. Though he state it took him like 3 years to understand the George Clinton definition of "pocket".
Groove is not necessarily straight that is a misconception and fals-teaching. Fusion has groove (as well as do other genre's of music). Mahavishu Orchestra inner mounting flame has some of the strongest groove you'll ever hear. You just have to know what you are listening to. That is what makes Dennis and Billy Cobham, Vinnie and Virgil Donati so dangerous. They can find the groove in what ever they play.

very well said... Dennis Chambers is the KING of the groove. hands down man, this guy gets so locked in to a groove its insane..you people aren't paying attention to him well enough i think.. i guess its because he is also a beast in other aspects of drumming. This guy man..my ulitmate favorite. My favs are Dennis, Vinnie is another BEAST.. wow.. Gadd, Virgil, cobham.. tell you wut... dave weckyl is nasty, yes he is.. but in his own style of music which i think is soft.. why? because people like dennis and vinnie do the same and more with much more power and punch. no one can hold those 2 in my opinion.. i love gospel drummers, i do,.. i love derico watson, ppl dont talk enough about him, i saw him live with bass extremes.. brought the house down, i saw dennis live brought it DOWN with the mike stern band, i saw dave live... eghhhh.... even someone in the crowd was like...yo dave you tired?? he didnt even answer the piano player had to say somthing to back him up.. said ugh..'' tired from touring alot'' oh my fault.. meanwhile dennis is in europe touring playing everydaayyyy with santana, every famous drummer has a crazy shedule and they bring it every night which is why they are famous to begin with.. i dunno... just my opinion.. im not a big fan of dave, dont get me wrong he is a monster in his own aspect, u can learn ALOT from him. but.. just aint cutting it for me.. when i listen to him he doesnt put that punch in me, you know when u hear somthing sooo nastyy it hurts?? u almost tear? dennis and vinnie. The SICKEST. and for overall groove master?? besides Jesus who is the KING of KINGS and the BEST at everything... here on earth.. Dennis Chambers...whos nickname happens to be the groove master... drummercat777 i cant believe u said u never heard him play a striaght groove.. lol its cool u just probably havent seen the right stuff.. because he is so versatile.. from music like Niacin, to mike stern, P-FUNK!! john scofield!!!! JOHN SCOFIELD BAND PEOPLE!! you guys never heard BLUE MATTER?? IN THE POCKET DVD???? SERIOUS MOVES DVD??? wooooooooooo siiiicccckkkkkkk grooovvvveesssssssssss
-
that is true. i mean, he is not my favorite as far as groove because it feels like he dances too much around the groove. just my opinion though.
-
I tell u who has developed one of the best grooves in gospel is Calvin Rodgers. thats why he is in such high demand. very few drummers in gospel can lock a groove down like he can, he's just so crisp and clean.
-
another really nice groove player is poogie bell.......nasty
