Title: Let someone use your bass
Post by: BassMan2000 on February 20, 2006, 10:27:22 AM
Have played at a Church and someone ask if they could use your bass?

What did you do?

I never let anyone use my Bass and I have no problem about it.
I play a six string and I leave my backup 5 string in my trunk.

I let one of the bass players at church use my bass when I first got it. I wanted to hear how it sounded in capable hands but I was nervous when he was holding it. people have the tendency to bump your bass up against something for some reason. My 4 string has a few knicks. One thing I hate to when you have your bass on your back and walk through a door with a low over hang. Ouch. I guess thats what hard cases are for. Im supirsed you keep your bass in your trunk. I was told that you should not do that because it will warp the neck if its too hot or too cold. Also someone told me to store my bass with the strings down like on a flat surface. I have forgot and left my 4 string in the car but I avoid doing that with my 6 string.

It is kinda like to when someone from a visiting church plays your keyboard or drums and you dont know how hard they are going to play.

I'd be glad to let anyone play my bass. To me it's just a thing it's an object that can be replaced. I can always get it fixed or buy a new one.

My life is about HIM not the things I have.

In the pass, I never had a problem let anyone borrow anytning I had (I think its because when I was growing up, I didn't have anything and I told myself when I grow up and get stuff, I will share it with anyone).

But there was something Ladybass said a while ago about dedicating your instruments to God and you shouldn't just let anyone touch them has got me thinking about this again.

As in take my bass home or just use it during a church service?

Take it home--absolutely not a chance of it--that's my baby! ;)

During a church service--Depends on who it is.  I know I don't like to borrow someone else's bass.

The other night at church, I wasn't expecting to play the bass so I didn't take mine, and I had to play a song.  So I borrowed someone else's bass.  Well, the strap came loose, and I almost dropped it. :o  I was so embarrassed, :-[ but the guy whose bass I was playing said it happens all the time and he needs to get it fixed, but I still felt really bad.

I was never one for allowing anyone to use my bass let alone play it.

Recently, I've been working with a young drummer in my church and he's been interested
in the bass.  I have a 5 string Peavey which is my very first since 1990...I call her "Pearl".  I
allow him to use it whenever necessary.

I've acquired several basses in the past year and a half and greatly considered leaving something
behind when my time comes.  I would like to "teach someone to fish" for once.

I think a problem to with lending your stuff is that people will not take care of it like you would. I have let people borrow my keyboard then find out its sitting in their car trunk at below freezing. You know electronics dont go good witht he cold. I also let someone use my other keyboard the other week. When I got it back the adapter was missing. Now Ive got to talk to the guy to find out where the adpater is. I think you may think a little different if you have the money to go out and buy something else but when you dont and if something happens and you cant replace it you have a problem on your hands.

Never............. You can still be a Christian and say NO that's what Music Stores or for. Would you let someone drive your car?  I'm not materialistic by no means- But I am responsible with what the Lord has blessed me with. I let someone play my Ax and he went slap silly with his LONG fingernails - I spent $175.00 on a  buff and rub to remove all the scratches- So I learned the hard way. I know will go the extra yard to provide a local Music Store that carries the same bass. I have found people to respect my response and thank me for directing them to purchasing- I find it amusing most people who ask to play it are not even bass players :)

My being generious with my belongings have nothing to do with being able to afford it. I can't I could not afford to buy the 3 basses that I own now, it's just money and the only time money is important to me is my tithe. GOD has blessed me with 3 basses so I feel as if I should do so.

I can't ake anything with me.

For most of the people I know, I don't have problem with them using my basses; I'd even let them take it home, but I wouldn't let some random dude do this. I wouldn't even let Spiritfingers nor Mysteryman play them!

I will let almost anybody play any one of my basses, as long as I am within several feet of them.

I will let a decent number of people play any except a couple of my most treasured basses if I'm in the room with them.

I have more fingers than I need to count the number of people I'd allow to take any of my basses home with them.  Everything's relative (and you don't wanna meet my relatives.....bad joke ;) ;D).

My basses are tools to accomplish what it is that I do.  It is up to me to determine whom I will allow to handle my tools and under what circumstances.

It is up to them to instill in me the trust that they will respect my tools enough to earn the privilege to use them.

Peace,

James

No, no, no, no, no, no, no!!!!!!!!!!  For the record, I am a guitar player but let me share my experince with you.  The Deluxe Active Jazz Bass V that I currently own is my second.  A few years ago, this dude who I used to go to church with AND has played bass and drums with me in the Church's band asked if he could borrow my bass until he got his fixed.  I said yes, but that I would need it back by the end of that week.  No problem...everything worked out fine.  I had no reason not to trust him as I basicaly knew the guy and his family.  Well the following week he asked again if he could use it and that was the last time I saw that bass.  Yea, I was a little upset about that.  I have forgiven him, but needless to say that I will never loan him anything ever again.  I have not seen him in years either and I do not consider him to be a friend.  He is only my "brother" in Christ, and let's leave it at that.

My point is if you're a musician you should have your own gear.  I wash my hands before I play to remove dirt or whatever are on them, I wipe it down after I play. I take care of my basses. I played at a church once were in-between services we left our gear out.
When I came back someone was banging away and before that it was knocked on the floor. Now after a service I put it back in the hard case.

My pastor does not see the big deal, because it's just a bass, but if someone got his mic, we get lectured.

*pulling the rusty, bent, screwdriver out of your chest*

*putting some peroxide and gauze on the wound*

*saying take 1 Percocet and call me in the morning*

That's a hard one to forget...but you WILL definately see that dude again. I just pray that everything be cordial!

I've let one person play my bass (a very good friend) at a play.  he treated her as if it was his own.  I would only let someone use my bass if i really know them very well and if they can afford to replace it if something happens when she's in there care. hear me when i say "replace it", not fix it.

No, not any more I let a person(a really good bassist better than I) see my bass and I walked off about 5 miniutes later this person had his own bass out playing and mine laying on the ground strings down, and come to find out he actually let it fall like that and my bass stand was right beside my rig.  So nope not any more.

If I trusted the person asking to borrow/use it then yes, I would let them.  God gave us enough common sense to know if someone is going to take care of our belongings as though they were their own....however, I'm a lefty so I've never had anyone asking to borrow my bass  ;)

I have let people borrow my bass in church service.   When we have visiting churches and they have musicians, but for one reason or another, they don't have intsruments, then we let them use ours to accompany their church.  I love my bass just as much as the next person, but when it comes down to it, it's just material.  Besides, it's not like it's a rock n roll concert and they're gonna smash it up after they get through with it.  ;D  No offense to and rock n rollers. ;)

Last night I went to a get together of about a dozen or so bassists.  Some of whom I'd met before and others I had not.  I started another thread on that, so check it out if you get the chance.

The point that applies to THIS thread, is that we all just brought our basses in, laid them down wherever there was room, and everybody picked up and played whatever they felt like playing.  It was a different kind of a fellowship, but a fellowship just the same.

And even though there were varying degrees of "talent" and "styles" in the room, it never truned into a chops-fest or a competition.  Here's the list of basses I remember seeing there.  There's an even longer list of amps, preamps, and cabinets.  The basses with  (James') behind them are the ones I took there from my collection.

Alembic Series I (James')
Rob Allen MB2 fretless 5 (Ken')
Celinder J-Update 5 (Ken's)
Curbow American Petite 5
DeArmond Pilot 5 Deluxe (w/ upgraded electronics)
Dean 8-string (Chris')
Epiphone EA-260 semi-hollobody shortscale
Fender Jazz (1973)
Fender Jazz with flats (Tim O's)
Fender Geddy Lee Jazz (w/ J-Retro; Chris')
Fender Geddy Lee Jazz (Steve's, formerly Tim's)
Fender Marcu Miller Jazz (Dan's)
Fodera Emperor Deluxe 5
G&L ASAT (Chris')
Gibson Explorer
Gibson Thunderbird IV
Hanewinckel Ceres Artist (James')
Hoyt Custom 4 (jmb7183's)
Jerzy Drozd Excelleny V
Lakland Skyline Darryl Jones 4 (two on Friday night; one is Pat's)
Lotus 4-string (my first bass!)
Marchlewski 5 (James')
MTD 435
MTD 535 (Vic's)
MTD Custom 535 - chambered prototype (two; Marilyn #3 and Vic's Marilyn #8)
Music Man Bongo (James')
Music Man Stingray (Pat's; double humbucker)
Reverend Rumblefish (Chris') a 4 string & a 5 string
Rickenbacker 4001 (Chris')
Roscoe LG-3005 (Vic's)
Sadowsky 25th Anniversary 24-fret 5-string
Sadowsky MV5 NYC (Steve's)
Skjold Custom 5
Skjold Exotic Custom 4
Skjold Stage 4
Tobias (pre-Gibson) Basic 5, # 766 - Jimmy Haslip model
Tobias (post-Gibson, Burbank) Basic 5, # 1353
Tobias (pre-Gibson) Classic 5, # 601

As my Dad would say "Nache" No way! I tune a full step down, so your b string is an a for me. And you get people who want to always tune it back up! I have my basses set up that way, so I always say you play it the way it is or no!

I don't own a bass, but if I did, I would imagine that I would trust someone who is capable of playing my bass to play it.  Of course, if a total stranger walks into the sanctuary and asks to use it then I would end find a way to let the person down easy.  If someone accidently left there's or something, then I would prolly let them use it.

At my church, we treat guest musicians as if they are at home.  We get off the instruments and let them play throughout the whole service.  Its our way of saying our home is your home.  I've only been playing for roughly 4 years, but my mentor for the keys has taught me a lot, and that's one of the things I will always remember.  :)

This topic will take an interesting turn for me on March 12th.  My Praise Band has been asked to accompany our pastor to an event at another church that afternoon.  What will make it interesting is, I'm not certain of what their PA System / drum setup is.  Our drummer plays an electronic kit through our PA System.  I'm assuming that he will need to play whatever setup they have at the other church.

Bass won't be an issue.  I'll be bringin' my own and can go straight cab or through a PA, but hopefully that church's drummer won't have any issue with someone else playing his kit.

Peace,

James

I was trying to avoid this topic like the plague but B3 sucked me in..."I wouldn't even let SpiritFingers" use my bass.  Oh really...that's strange seeing is how I should have the pink slips on all your basses after last Bassoff!  Oh no he didn't! ;D

Back on topic though.  I don't normally quote Madea but I feel that it's appropriate!  Not no but...(yall know the rest).

Dude if you don't have your own bass, then that tells me one thing.  You're not serious!  So why would I give you my bass.  Do you let someone borrow your wife?  I don't think so.  Now I have a few basses and I would like someone pluck on my old Fender Jazz Five that I don't play much.  But my main basses...I don't think so...  First of all, only I can break my own strings.  Second, only I can adjust my settings.  Third of all, if you are that serious, meet me at the music store and we'll pick you out a bass.  I might even help you pay for it, if you're that serious.

B3 said take it home...Oh my God, I'm about to have a cow!  Take it home!  Are you kidding... Take it home.  I play Ibanez...ain't like I'm like Wolldav and got a Ken Smith black tiger.  If I had his bass and somebody asked me to play it, I would lose my salvation.  Yall might here me curse at church.  I'd be like "negro, if you don't get yo old %$#$ out my face I will have to #$$%$$. ;D  Just kidding...but I still wouldn't let them use it.

Yall be cool

Sad but true, I see that happen with lots of drummers at church.  Turnin toms all crooked, and re-arranging the set.  Just like my bass, I've let only 1 person ever borrow my bass and take it home (But we play in a band together so he knows the deal).  But I have let some cats play it with me around and the first thing they try to do is re-tune it!:o  I'm like: "I'm tuned to the organist at my church!, dont be messing up my tuning for no reason!" is what I tell them As I shake my fist >:(  and gently snatch my bass back! ;D

I never let anyone even my own mother take my bass home with them.  Now if someone I trust wants to try it out for like 5 minutes or less then I would watch their every move like a hawk in the sky spying down preying on its rodent dinner for the evening, until the person gets tired of me staring a hole through them and stalking every position they place the bass in.  I become a lunatic when hands other than mine are on my bass.

At my studio I had some guys over and I let one use my 4 string during the session.  This guy who didn't bring his own axe funked up my bass! I mean when I picked it up it felt nasty and STANK!!!  It smelled like a combination of BO and butt!!!  Nasty!!!   I didn't use it for days hoping it would "air out" then changed the strings and cleaned it. Another time I'd just put all new heads on my Noble & Cooley drumset and this guy dented my heads.  I tend to be reticent about letting folk use my stuff now.

I may let someone play it at church.  I have no problem with that.  NO TINKERING!!!!
Play "AS-IS."  Let someone take it with them???   Wow...  Now that's insane.  There's many reasons of saying no.  The nicest, because I need it within MY reach at all times.  I'm always practicing at home.  Every opportunity I get I pick up my bass and play.

This reminds me of something from years ago.  I asked a good friend if I could borrow his guitar, take it home for a couple of days.  Man, he laughed at me.  Would you believe a month ago, yea, February, he asked me if he could borrow my guitar (not the bass) not for a couple days but until he got his fixed.  (Ha, Ha, Ha!)...  I told him it would be here waiting for him, whenever he wants it.  I guess I can be such a pushover at times...  But if he asked for the bass the answer would had been a quick emphatic "No."

;D man...i thought i was the only one!!!! I play a Schecter Diamond Series Custom 5 string, first of all, Lord knows how I worked to earned that bass, so I never asked for people's bass's anyway, cuz i know how i feel about mine. I don't lend it to anyone! At church though, theres this one kid, who always comes over when im playing after church...he loves the bass, but the rule doesnt exclude him  ;D, so i got a 4 string, where i let him "practice" on...but the most important thing is people dont know how to take excellent care of their brothers/sisters materials. Its sad but true.

I don't get many requests, but if I did I would say yes only if that person were going to play in my presence.  NEVER would I let my basses out of my sight!

And like others, I wouldn't ask another bassist to borrow his or hers.  Maybe play it in their presence but never borrow it.

In April we had a week of performances at our school. My band and another band were involved in the performance. Their bass player was a startin out 1 hu can play sorta simple riffs and stuff but he can be quite silly and mess about alot. So we're here on the stage settin up an suddenly I hear a pop, turn around, he's broken a string. So there on the stage is his wounded bass, my bass and a school one is elswhere and the first thing he does is turn to me and ask if he can use mine. Now im standin here on the stage, evrybody waiting on my next move and im looking at the extent of the damage to his G. I eventually decided not to because even tho he has not yet become quite skilled on the bass, he seems to be quite good at snapping strings from trying to slap and pop during classic rock tunes?!?

Tell me something!! I don't mind sharing: example another church comes in, bass player wants to use my amp, no problem, why should you tote your stuff in (like I always have to do) if you don't have to. BUT... If you're a Bass Player... Where's YOUR GIRL!!!

The only folks I trust with my bass are my friends/fellow band members.  They can pick up my bass any time and play it without asking (and they usually do this while I'm on the keys).  I've not been in any situations where someone new to me asked to use my bass, but anyone else requires my advance permission and will be under my scrutiny.

I had a look of astonishment as to how his hand could sweat so much and i had to play after him! I dont think i'll ever let another one touch my axe again!

Jucoise,

What bass are you holding in your avatar?  The headstock looks HUGE.  Or is it all camera angle?

But there was something Ladybass said a while ago about dedicating your instruments to God and you shouldn't just let anyone touch them has got me thinking about this again.

im not really a bass player, but my bass player is peculiar about who youches her bass.
I agree that you should be wise about who is playing with the instrument that you have dedicated to God.

I'm kinda late to this thread, but I'll echo some of the earlier comments.  I have no problem letting people that I know play my bass.  We fellowship with other churches regularly, and I know a few of the other bass players that I'd trust to handle my gear as if it were their own.

But borrowing it, as it taking it away from my presence?  No indeed!  Only lend what you can afford to lose if you don't get it back... and even then, you don't lend to any-and-every-body.

To me, there is nothing wrong with us "musicians" saying, "No." It's not about being materialistic or anything like cause I know I wish I had a lil more money to play with, lol... It doesn't mean we're not Christ like to say no either. If you're a musician and you're going to a service where your church, your group or whomever will be singing/performing; why wouldn't you have you bass with you? I'll let you use my amp; but my ax, NO! I mean, can't we almost relate that as to going to church without your offering, your tithe, or your BIBLE?

All of use that spent good money that we worked hard for to purchase this equipment that we have; we've earned the owner's right to say who can and who can not use our gear. It's nothing hard or complex about it. If a person that ask has a problem with you not letting them; then the fall back is, "Where is your equipment?" I've had plenty of guys to say, man I wanna play your bass, cause of it's looks, and they got a bass on their shoulders. So again, even as Christians, we have the right to say no and NOT feeling condemned about it. Just my two cents and take on the matter.

Keep bassN ya'll...

Well, now it's finally happened...sort of.  I was playing a program at my church and another church was coming in to set up.  We had finished, I had already packed up my bass and was about to unplug my Fender Bassman 100 and roll it out when the bassist for the next church said, "Mind if I use your amp?"  He had a Fender Rumble 15.  I said, "Help yourself", and then was treated to some of the best playing I have ever heard.  Later on in the program our church was called back to do more songs (I have learned a valuable lesson, never to pack up until the program's over).  The other bassist saw I was in a spot, handed me his bass and said, "Help yourself."

All's well that ends well.  I hope I run into that guy again so that I can learn from him!
