I've Heard her play before both piano and organ. On her cd Everlasting Life there are several tracks where she is playing piano and organ.

She is awesome a lot of what we organists do now comes from stuff she did all throughout the 70's and 80's

On any of of her albulms you hear her doing her thing she even plays on some of karen clarks albulms

p j demonstrates a inversion run she does a lot in fact she is famous for it.

let me correct you on that Chris "butch" Woodie is the reason you many organist play like we do today. I sure that ever state has like that person that is like the king of that state on the organ and you guys heard them play and steal (learn) music for them. But if you Would ask if they ever heard of butch Woodie I am preety sure they will say "MAN YEAH" dude is sick. I even heard the Kim burrel Begged for butch to play for her and he turned her down. Now dude was tripp'n for that. But Butch turns almost everbody famous down. he use to play some chuch and got like $1,200 a sunday. but he quit that for some reason. now he just kinda helps his dad out at Kennerly Temple COGIC in STL. If u guy wont to hear some of is work go to www. showmethat.com and then go to hall of fame he has two hymns on the one It is well and the other yes lord now the stuff on here is like soooo wack compared to what he can do but its tight to us still if that makes any sense.  :D

YEs that was interesting but you know That being said me and a lot of the cats I play with  includig  pJ morgan who on his video demonstrated a run and said Twinki lark does thi a lot.  credit the runs and  licks  from her
Probably because she recorded and bought the sound out that is whay she gets credit but even if she was not the original she was responsible for me playing in that style because I heard her do it and I imitated her licks.

If she got it from him so be it but she is still the one who popularized it and there fore the one I give credit to. so because she recorded and brought that woodie sound to the nation then who was really responsible for the influence gettin out??

Its similar to the martial arts thing Karate came from a shaolin monk washed up on the shore of okinawa

when the karate craze hit the us and everyone was getting into it

I wouldnt say it was really shaolin that was responsible for everryone doing karate

no it was really karate that was responsible for karate

Shaolin buried their knowledge kept it hidden

karate systems taught it

butch stayed in his home town twinkie recorded internationally

But  I aaint taking anything away from the brother

I never heard him and i will check him out

just i think that we are quick to say something is right or wrong and I believe there are several ways to look at something

You may not agree with me but that does not make me wrong just a differnt view point

Everybody I know that talks about this Butch Woodie, makes it sound like he's the baddest organist on the planet!

I'm not gon' say the brotha isn't bad as all get out - but I doubt he's the greatest. The world is much bigger than St Louis, you know?

Hey-hey-hey!!!   It's ya' boy, FINGERZ!!!      Since I moved down here to ATL, I haven't heard any (ANY!!!) tight organists in it's metropolitain & surrounding areas    I'm from St. Louis, but I have traveled the world & have mt musicians from all walks of life.  Rich, homeless, black, white, or whateva'!!!!   But this cat named Christopher "Butch" Woodie, iz "Tha' Truth, Tha' Whole Truth, & Nuttin' But Tha' Truth!!!"    Don't get me wrong, everyone iz respectable in their own right, but God has blessed Butch with dominance...

Hey listen up people it is all relative if Some people let me correct that if a lot of people feel that woodie is the man

whatever dude that is there perceptoin based on whatever information they had

and you know there is nothing like hearing soemone live

there is an element of connecting to your audience that you will never capture wqtching a showme that .com clip

what I am saying is that it is fine to leave peopl;e with their opinion while at the same time expressing your own.

Many many people think woodie is the best.

We can qualify best if we want to

but the only way to really do this is to have a real all out battle of the big boys on the B3 that would be a hot thing to see

If LG,M
could get

twinkie my girl
Butch woodie
melvin
Kevin Bond
and whoever else to do their thing but you know what

I know that Butch heyward wouldnt want to do that because he is too humble for that

and probably butch woodie is too that is why he had to be begged to play on an album (i am just guessing)

so this idea we have of who is king is irrevelant

we all have people who move us who connect to us who give us an experience

A YO ME AND M.D. HAVE HAD THIS TALK B4. AND IT KINDA GO OUT OF HAND. AND ACTUALLY I GOT PREETY P***ED OFF ABOUT IT. BUT IM GOING TO SAY IT AGAIN.

BUTCH IS THE GREATEST!!!!!!

I'M TELLING YOU. ONCE YOU HERE THIS GUY YOU WILL GO NUTTZ.

AND FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE, KIM BURRELL DOES ACTUALLY GO CRAZY FOR HIM. FOR A PRIME EXAMPLE. ANYBODY THAT KNOWS ME FROM ST. LOUIS WILL KNOW THAT I USUALLY HANG AROUND MY UNCLES, MIKE HARPER, ISADORE (punkin) KING, RICHARD (june bug) BROWN, ROB WOODIE, BUTCH WOODIE, AND MEVIN MOORE. AND ANYWHERE THEY GO THEY KICK IT TOGETHER. AND ANYBODY THAT KNOWS ONE OF THEM USUALLY KNOWS ALL OF THEM.

SO LAST NOVEMBER DURING THE HOLY CONVOCATION IN MEMPHIS, MYSELF, MIKE, ISADORE, AND JUNE WERE SOMEWHERE EATING ON THURSDAY AND WE SAW KIM BURRELL LEAVING AND WE ALL WENT TO SPEAK TO HER B/C THE YEAR BEFORE BUTCH INTRODUCED US TO HER. SO WHEN WE SAW EACH OTHER SHE KEPT ASKING ABOUT BUTCH AND WE SAID THAT HE WASN'T COMING UNTIL FRIDAY NIGHT. SO SHE WAS LIKE ARIGHT COOL. SHE WANTED HIM AND ROB TO PLAY FOR HER IF SHE SUNG. I THOUGHT WOW KIM BURRELL IS GOING TO BE SINGING WITH BUTCH PLAYING BEHIND HER. (st. louisians, can you imagine that?) SO ATFERWARDS WE SAW HER IN A HOTEL LOBBY FRIDAY AND SHE WAS ASKING WERE BUTCH WAS B/C SHE WANTED TO GO OVER A COUPLE SONGS WITH HIM ON THE PIANO IN THE LOBBY OF THE HOTEL. AND WE HAD TO TELL THAT BUTCH SAID THAT HE WASN'T GOING TO COME. (at the last minute) IT BROKE HER HEART. SHE DIDN'T EVAN SING THAT NIGHT.

That kind of solidifies my point that people have experiences and I dont think anyone should minimize that.

I never heard him play hopefully I will but in the mean time lets just enjoy peoples annointing

I know butch Heyward doesent even take credit of his playing he gives all the glory to God

so lets keep it Holy and say God really uses that brother or that Sister

Thanks Catron for sharing that with us

to answer the "original" question Kim can definately get busy on the organ.  i heard her play behind a preacher who is a beast on organ (Shawn Tyson) and he lost his mind...also her husband Jojo Wiley is very conservative he plays like David Banner but he REALLY IS THE INCREDIBLE HULK...BELIEVE THAT

Hey, just say Butch Woodie is great and leave it at that. If you're going to say he's the greatest, at least explain what makes you feel so strongly that he is? I don't care about his gigs, or what he turned down. I'm talking about pure ability. A resume doesn't make you a great player. It simply means you've worked...

Sooo.....? I mean, you do understand ... because he is a great player - and you're so close to him, that that leads me to believe you're overly biased. Secondly, do you know how many great musicians their are in the world?? To say that one guy is the best, is a bit much, you don't think?

See, I've been called a great organist myself - and I'm not exactly as easy to impress as some other organist's. Not because I'm full of myself .... however, the more you've heard/accomplished .. the more difficult it is to impress you. That's just a fact of life.

Sooo ... give me some type of sound, OBJECTIVE explanation ...other than the fact that you & a lot of his other fans think he's the greatest.

originilatiy

creativity

chords

runs

pedal work

soloing

groove

rhythym

hymns

shouts

talk music

drawbar sounds

tricks

chord and harmonic sound variety and appropriateness to the occasion
these are some criteria

to answers your question on what makes BUTCH that good. Tell me who u know that can straight run with their feet? and when i say run im not talking about a liitle sout run like: C C# D Eb F F# G Ab: Oh no my friends i am talking about like a run the u hear Pj morgan or John peters does with their fingers. Just image that being done with his feet. other thing this dude plays on the top register as well as the bottom register at the same time. now i know u gyuy are thinking "man what so tight about that i can do that"
but what im talking about say his left hand he will do like play a chord like  Ab D/F#C C#/FACD and with his first couple of fingers he will hit like the F# C on the top part and bring his fingers down to thee bottom and hit the C# F And A the bring the rest back up to th C and D back on top  and then on top of that play a different chord whit his feet. Yes i said it Chord with his feet. And he'll play a whole song like that. aother thing is dude can run circles around anyone i know. Man has the badest run you will ever hear. if u guy like pj and john peters runs then you will just fant if you hear this dude runs. He does stuff that just make you say WHAT THE HECK IS HE THINKING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He will hit like a little 3 chord proggession and you will find yourself just bug 'n up because it so sick. Thats just some of the stuff the man can do. i pretty sure other stl cats are people who heard him can add to this list. Oh and by the way alot of people can try to sound like him but NO ONE come close to him.

Ps: i love Kim Burrell and she is a beast on the organ. i cant wait tell she comes out with another cd  ;D ;)

In my opinion and I know this is an evergoing argument, Butch Woodie is not the GOAT. He is dope not taking that from him. I think people are giving to much credit to people that they admire. But to credit this man as the reason a lot of people play the way they do or something to that effect.. I cant have that. Hes good in fact he is great in fact he is very great, geat great great but there are too many beast out there unheard of probably playing in storefront churches to give all the credit to this one cat. The most copied style of playing is the Brooklyn style created by Butch Heyward, and sadly him and Woodie have the same JEDI characteristics but atleast Heyward came out his cave . But people know Butch Heyward have always heard about him. Saying Woodie chord with this feet and all this awesome wonder... Post some footage. Name some projects that he was on. Michael Bereal played for Kim. She mentioned dude by name while she was singing. Luke Austin played for Kim, Shaun Martin played organ for Kim, Jimane Nelson played for Kim was her MD. Cornelll Thigpen played for Kim was her MD. and Kims husband is a beast too. Sayong this cat is the truth cause Kim asked for him... c'mon. And then he dont show up she and she dont sing. She prolly didnt want to look silly she is an artist that makes a living singing why wouldnt she want the best in the city.  She was probably upset because of why he didnt show up. You know somebody is seeking assistane and you bounce. There is nothing cool about that. I just got this thing about cats thats so nasty but they so mysterious that you  have to come unannounced to a service to catch them playing unplugged or they wont show up. Cats that hide in the woods with an organ and practice for months and them come out like crack. Atleast people like John,  PJ Morgan, and whomever are secure enough to share what they have learned. That means to me that they have an overflow. Im sorry but GOAT I aint buyin it!!!!   :) Post some footage. You seen John you seen PJ now post some Butch Woodie.

Man, I'm gonna tell you - I went back to showmethat.com and listened to dude - and I don't like muddled sound. That doesn't sound musical to me. It just sounds like someone randomly pressing down ten keys. It's the same with cat's whose runs last for 5 seconds. What's the deal??

Some people like that stuff. That's the reason I don't like John Peters. I don't like phatness throughout an entire song. I like phat chords like I like my seasoning on my food. Too much can kill it - and just enough will make you want to come back for seconds.

I'm assuming dude doesn't play like that on gigs, tho'. Kim wouldn't be after that type of sound.

Same thing with John. Hes dope and I like some of the stuff he does as well but I like a variety too. I peeped that clip and that dude (Butch Woodie) did a lot scales. GOAT??? okay. To each his own. All im saying is post some footage of this great Yoda of the Hammond B3. THe sad thing is that dudes like Butch Woodie and John have these cats that put them on such a high pedalstool and when people that dont know any better hear them they are dissappointed because some avid fan painted them to be some super hero on the organ from planet C# that has the ability to do chords with two feet, runs that John and PJ Morgan do with there hands he does with his feet. (mind you John and PJ both have lightening fast runs that are not just chromatic scales). Man nevermind the clips. I dont need to see it. Im straight!!

Hey, man ... I'm not downing him. I just said I don't like that muddy sound. You guys really put this guy on too high of a pedestal. So high that, you get upset when anyone critique his playing. This guy COULD be the greatest organist, but that still wouldn't make him perfect.

Come on, man .... all I've heard from his supporters/fans is extreme fanaticism. I have a hard time taking comments from you guys seriously ... when you make him sound like he could walk on water. I'll come down to hear him play .. if someone can ever give me a date & time. I just want to hear this "B3 Wonder".

Also, I'd like to add - some people have a preference of style too. I have a friend who'd shut that Butch Woodie clip off in the first minute, 'cause it's busy. Some people can't get into that. Personally, I wasnt' feeling the chord progressions. I know this is just one clip - but I can only comment on what I've heard.

How can you argue a man's preferences? Jimi Hendrix was a great guitarist .. but, I don't much care for Rock music. Is that saying he's wack? Hardly. I just don't care for the style ...

Look man! Butch is dope he is well rounded, he strong in all areas his soloing and chord changes are quite impressive. Im not downing dudes playing at all cause he is dope. People will always have their preferences. Butch is the truth and people will literally fight for him. Some say John is the truth and he has his strong points as well. Cats will fight for him too. Its really about preference. People really need to be careful about what they say cause right now I dont think there is a greatest of all time. Butch is easily one of the top in the nation. And thats a huge accomplishment and compliment. I wanted to see some footage but now I dont need to. You or Butch dont have to prove anything to me. Its not even that serious. Dude is nice and as much as I travel im sure that I will get an opportunity to hear him live and direct. Im atually lookin forward to it. ;)

How would you say Butch Woodie's skill compares to someone like Jimmy Smith or Joey DeFrancesco?  or even piano players like Bud Powell or Art Tatum?

I am from Houston and I have plenty to say about this topic on Butch Woodie. To the guy who endorses him as the best, ask Butch what he thinks. Yes Kim Burrell is a beast on the organ and as far as someone playing for her, where I am from everybody plays for everybody...There is no exclusive musicians club. Who is the best, probably someone who will never say they are. This gospel music is an ever-changing cycle that no one person has ever captured the fullness of. When you have hundreds of thousands of musicians in our country that all play there is no way to judge who the best is because we did not set the standard in the first place. A lot of us get it twisted that we did something that ain't been done, but we must remember who the Giver of the gift is and then we can try and really operate in it. This whole topic will always be biased because everyone has thier personal picks and preferences but the greatest is The Spirit Of God that plays through us all and at any given time can take the gift away because God ain't gone share His glory with no man. Play that organ, dudes, but play it for the Glory to come and fill the room, so lives can be changed... When healings and deliverance can come through your playing, then say you are the best...because God came when you played...but then you still can't say anything because you know "IT AIN'T ABOUT YOU"...

lets just say butch woodie is great in his own right. by anyone stating that one organinst is better than another then you take away eachs' persons style. so i.e. i like melivin crispell so i am biased to him..........and you have so many cats that simply put it down. can you say that butch woodie is better than moses "organmonster" tyson, or either of them better than michael bereal, what about ivan powell, or what about john peters, or eddie howard and the list can go on.......and lets not forget about less talked about organist that are out there as well mike taylor from chi-town who plays for and is md for ricky dillard and eric davis from CT who plays for youthful praise and mario cooper who plays for l. spenser smith down in alabama and paris who plays for tye tribbett, or mark copeland and this list can on as well

MAN ............................. SHUT UP. :-\  MOSES AND BUTCH SHOULD NEVER BE IN COMPARED TOGETHER THAT LIKE SAYING IS JACKIE CHAN BETTER THAT BUTCH WODDIE. AND I HAVE HEARD ALL OF THIS ORGANIST IN PERSON THAT U LISTED MUSIQISME26 AND UMMMMMMMMMM YES HE IS BETTER EVEN THOUGH ALL THOSE PEOPLE U LISTED R BETTER. SEE THIS IS WAY STL(MIDWEST) HAS THE BEST MUSICANS(GOSPEL) AND ITS NOT JUST ME THAT SAY THAT EVERYBODY THINK THE MIDWEST GOT UNDER CONTROL. AND IM NOT BRAGGN CAUSE I USE TO LIVE IN SC AND THOUGHT THIS DUDE NAMED GARY LEE WAS THE TRUE AND PEOPLE WOULD TRY AND TELL ME ABOTU THIS CAT BUTCH AND I SAID THE SAME THING U GUYS (THAT HAVE NEVER REALLY HEARD HIM EXEPT ON SHOWMETHAT) ARE SAYING. SO I UNDERSTAND WHAT U ALL ARE SAYING........

YOU KNOW WHAT IT DOES NOT MATTER IT ALL SOUNDS GREAT IN GODS EAR THAT WHAT REALLY MATTTERS. :)

After all this talk of the G.O.A.T, how could we forget one of the greatest organist who ever graced the face of the Earth....Ganondwarf from Zelda ....dude was a monster!!!!! He could play in 20 keys at once and when he played, the leslie and Hammond caught on fire!!!!! LOL ...J/K

I had to laugh when someone said Butch made the leslie on the wall catch on fire....playing runs on the bass pedals that John or Pj play on there feet??? Are we taking it a lil too far fellas? lol  If there truly is a G.O.A.T , we've never heard him/her...let's not let our biased opinions and myths that we've heard be the deciding factor on who's the greatest...

jomo7 man relax i'm sure your not on butch woodie payroll so be easy.........but you did prove my point you being biased to a person you look up to has you standing firm on your opinion, no problem but how can you say everyone who disagree doesnt have right to their opinion.......all that they say he can do i can guaruntee ivan powell can..........and if you took the time to read my post you would see i gave love to east coast, midwest, down south, and the west coast......wendell lowe is a beast from the midwest and so is eddie howard(although he's in florida now)

That's the thing - their are SOOOO many great organist's out there; to label someone the GREATEST, is a bit Ludacris. Now, I think I know what it is ..... Butch is so much better than the dudes that they've heard, and what he does is so amazing - that they can't imagine someone being iller. I'm not going to say Butch isn't a top-level talent. I'm just going to say that their are other top level talents out there too. Just not as easy to find - or else they wouldn't be top level.

Reminds me of when I first entered college ... their was a friend of mine who played drums like I had never heard them play before. I told him, "Man, you gotta be the best in the world!!" He laughed hard .... and took me to his dorm room, and showed me footage of some of his favorite drummers.

Butch Woodie may be special - but give it some time, you'll hear someone else that's just as good, or better.

Undoubtedly, Butch is one of the best organists around....I will never ever take that away from him as long as i live......but i will say that there are alot of talents that GOD has given out, not just one.....No doubt, the dude is a child prodigy......that is the truth.....but there are also alot of other child prodigies in this world......what i am saying is that GOD did not give one talent out.....he gave many....its hard to compare musicians to each other, when you got so many....There are alot of unique musicians, with their own voicings on their instrument...There is no one catt that has IT ALL...Instead of arguing and going back and forth about who is GREAT and not GREAT....lets appreciate everyone's talents and gifts....and i assure you that i am not hating, because i am very much so a BUTCH WOODIE FAN, probably his #1...but i am also a fan of the TRUTH......GOD BLESS!!!!

the sad thing is that some of us are acting like he plays to be popualr thats prolly why he declines those things maybe he just plays to praise god(why we should all play) to get out blessing and annointing i wanna strive to have a state of mind i dont even know the guy but i have a friend like that personality wise (random info) he was on court to be prom king and everyone wanted him to win he stayed home cuz he doesnt like all the attention) back to my topic and butch woodie has nothing to do with kim burrels playing ive never heard her play ever! and nobodys posted anything of her playing so why are we talking bout it? not trying to be rude its like saying"yo i know this guy he is sick on the drums" or soemthin like that some1 please post a clip or somethin please

Please let it go!  You seem to be a very intelligent person, as well as an accomplished musician (and I pray that you have passed from death to life), if so , there is no need for you to subject yourself to unbridaled zeal.  This message has been sent to relieve you and relegate the notion that "I" am the greatest organist in the world.  I'll even take this opportunity to say that most of the comments (especially in regard to my "Sister" Kim Burrell) aren't true, or I had/have no knowledge of it. [A good reputation is more valuable than silver and gold].  Now, I am special b/c I am uniquely created and made by God, and so are you; and every good and perfect gift comes from the Father of lights(knowledge) so what I have is just a portion, my portion...I'm just a vessel but rest assure I am no "BEAST".

he use to play some chuch and got like $1,200 a sunday.

I know this is a very old comment & I'm not trying to dig up old fossils .....but....

WHAT?!?!?!?!?!  ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

He left a church paying $1,200 dollars a Sunday???? A GREAT musician, where I'm from, isn't seeing anymore than $400, and he'd have to be playing at a church where his father/mother is the pastor, and they'd have to have a considerable amount of members.

Man, he's a bigger man than I'll ever be. I would've found SOMETHING to like about that church! If this is infact true, then Butch isn't just a rare organist, but he's a rare man. I know many men who talk about God will provide, but I bet you less than 98.999 percent of those jive turkey's would walk away from $1,200 a Sunday!

Shooooot! The Pastor could try to sleep with their wife, and they'd blame her!  ;D

Yeah its gettin madd old.  IF he isn't worried about bein the best in the world and the G.O.A.T. then we should chill.  I would like to compare him to Jiimy Smith or Joey D, just for personal preference.  Then to call the midwest the best area for musicians?  Dudes, c'mon.  You just cant say that when the nicest cats is from all over.  i mean, yo got the NYC, baltimore Cali, all these musicaian-rich areas and you say somethin like that?  That's Whack.  They may have some of the best but unless you have heard EVERY dude from EVERY region play, and that is highly improbable

Kim Burrell is bad on the organ, especially the way she put chords in the right place. Then not only that, she can sing what she plays.
