who does something that everyone isnt doin......
gospel or other styles....
a great solo drummer to me iz someone who can work around the set
and many directions....go to the left or right whenever
has a cool level of speed...doesnt rely on the "church triplet lick"in a thousand combo's lol
and tries to be innovative...ive seen a lot of clones, i wanna see someone come
different....create a style all your own
thats what makes music and playing fun when its fresh and new
not recycled and played out

Did he just say he's seen a lot of clones? Did he say create a style of your own??
When I said that, a lot of you thought I was a hatin' jerk. I guess if I played for Kiesha Cole, my words would carry more weight, huh?!

MD - It ain't like that..you always drop knowledge, in your Maestro Divine way...LOL
I didn't say everyone. If it was everyone, I would just sign off and never come back, lol.
I'm just saying - dudes don't want to give me my props for droppin' what knowledge I have, 'cause I've never played a big gig. I've recieved an excellent musical education - but even that's only respected second to your working resume. I've said it before, and I've said it again .... I'm a lights off, in the basement musician. Playing for other people is secondary for me. I'm just totally consumed by exploring what I like to call "the Universe Of Rhythm & Sound". I play & practice 'cause I have to. Not because I'm trying to go on tour with Kim Burrell.
A lot of dudes don't respect that. That's fine, tho'. I'm gonna do me.

I look at it like this ... what if someone came to school wearing the same exact clothes you wear. Wearing the same sneaker. Get their hair-cut the same way. Talk to the same women you talk. Just straight hi-jack your personality & taste in clothes. You'd get mad, right?
Well, that's what a lot of dudes do musically. It's just that it's tolerated more, 'cause sooooo many dudes are too lazy to find their own musical voice. Heck, I'd say the majority. Every blue moon I'll hear someone that'll do stuff that I've never heard from another drummer.

Man...
One of the things that I learned through the GC masterclass vids (I only just downloaded them, so bear with me) is that everything we learn to play or do as a result of playing has been done before. That was one of the main points that I picked up across all the vids & I've only just started to fully understand, appreciate & apply it to my drumming.
Now... Thomas you got me confused man...

I disagree that everything has been done before.
It frustrated me to hear people say that. A lot of people use that as an excuse for the lack of creativity in their playing.
IF everything has been done before - their are certain things that have been done too much. Some musical ideas haven't been explored enough. No doubt.
That's a big "If", anyway.
-
Thanks MD for clearing that up for me AND making me realise that there is a fine line between excuses & lack of creatively expanding myself!
Sound knowledge, B.

HEY MAESTRO, I FEEL YOU ON WHAT YOU SAID ABOUT PLAYING FOR THE ART OF DRUMMIMG, & YOU'RE RIGHT, SO MANY CATS JUST PLAY FOR GIGS, & IF THEY DON'T GET A BIG GIG, THEY THINK THEIR SKILLS AREN'T GOOD ENOUGH, THAT'S LIKE SAYING IF EVERY BASKETBALL PLAYER DOESN'T MAKE THE PROS, THEN THEY CAN'T PLAY, I THINK THIS IS MY 5TH TIME SAYING THIS, BUT THERE ARE SO MANY CATS THAT ARE STRAIGHT KILLING (WITH THEIR OWN ORIGINALITY OF COURSE), BUT WE'LL NEVER HEAR THEM, THIS WORLD IS TOOOOO BIG TO HEAR EVERY GREAT YOUNG DRUMMER!!!!!!!!!
AND BY THE WAY MIKE REED JR. IS SICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
To many to name 10 but my number one is Ron Bruner, Jr!
Who is this Ron Bruner?????
I've heard the name a million times, but have never heard him play!

Ron Bruner... that does sound really familiar & I don't know why...
Aye, can someone list the artists he's worked with or direct me to some footage of him... I hope its the guy I'm thinking of...
-
There was a thread about Ron Bruner a couple of weeks ago.He plays with The Young Jazz Giants and has toured with Kenny Garrett.
As far as finding your own personal voice..well that doesn't happen overnight! It's a lifetime process.Know the history of drums and drummers, strive for good technique and then forget 'bout it so you can focus on that personal voice you should be aiming to.
One thing tho',it's cool to clone, steal or copy licks from someone.I mean, everybody does that and there's nuttin' wrong with that as long as you manage to make it your own.You should not just play stuff note for note as you've heard it played by someone else. That said,it's all good to "steal" whatever sounds good to you.
Even Thomas did it!!lol .I can hear a lot of Vinnie in his style, the flams and stuff. It's all good as Vinnie is my personnal favourite and he for sure, does stuff that nobody does over there. But then again,Vinnie stole a lot of stuff from Tony Williams,Gadd,Elvin,Zigaboo but he took it to another level ya know?
Like he didn't just copy,he made it his own stuff so now when you hear someone do the single stroke between hand and foot(Buddy Rich memorial) you like"He got that from Vinnie..." but originally,Tony and Buddy used to do it all the time.
That's why you have to know the History man. We're always gonna play stuff that's been played before.Rudiments are the same for all so,unless you come up with different ones, which is most unlikely, chances are you're gona have to own your stuff in order to make it sound different and unique.
Just my two cents..
-
ALL THATS COOL BUT USING YOUR FLAVOR TO SEASON TUNES IS MORE IMPORTANT BE SURE NOT TO TAKE AWAY FROM THE MUSIC HAVE YOU GUYS SAW VINNIE WITH FAITH HILL OR WILL WITH SHAKA WECKL WITH LEE RIT.. THE DRUM TUNES THAT LAST ARE THE MUSICAL ONES
GO BANNANAS IN THE BANNANA TREE SONGS AND SOLOS BUT MAKE SURE YOU COME DOWN TO THE ROOTS AT THE RIGHT TIME

Rick Gratton (Ricks Licks) look it up, books and videos are awesome
Dave Weckl, Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Gadd...Innovators.
Buddy Rich..Do I have to explain.
John Bonham......Innovated the fast foot long before Gerald did it. I have a concert DVD from Led Zepplin in 1974-75 and hes tearing the foot/tom thing up!
Mike Portnoy's dvds will give you guys new ideas on fast foot/tom tom fills
Dana Davis, Jeff Davis, Gerald Heyward...Fathers of modern day gospel drumming. Every lick you play no matter how technical these guys started it.
Stokly...Brought a new form of R&B drumming to the masses (everybody knows pretty brown eyes!) One of the most under rated drummers ever, hes one of my #1's.
Terry Bozzio........Hes turned his kit into a drum orchestra and has pieces writen for it.
is that ten?
-
can i get some ron brunner and little mike clips also.
thanks
