Title: ? about Butch Woodie..
Post by: sonofpaul on March 20, 2006, 10:13:07 AM: I just read some posts saying Butch Woodie is the best organ player alive..I'm not a organist but I would love to hear him..can someone tell me of some cd's that he played on..thanks..ps..as for being the best, has anyone heard of jazz organist joey defranchesco???

For some reason, when I hear someone say someone is the best alive, and they're hell-bent on believing this ... I have a hard time taking them seriously.

Do you know how many great organist's their are in the world?? Do you know how many guys that just practice all the time - with no care or concern for gigs?

Man - Butch is definitely filthy ... but, the fact that most of the dudes I'm hearing this from are from St. Louis ... I'm inclined to believe they're very biased.

DUDE SHUT UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUPPPPPPPPP. MAN first of all and i mean no harm by this but the man just ask where he can hear a clip of butch no one asked for you to come on here and hate just cause you the only one that thinks he can bet the best GOSPEL ORGANIST in the world. Man matter of fact when you coming down here so us stl cats can here how you get down before butch shut you down? I already told you where and when and if you need direction the may i suggest map quest.

Post by: thik_stix on April 06, 2006, 09:25:29 AM: WOW!!!!You know, i know Butch and have played with him many times...and i know him enough to know that Butch is not the competitive type.....he is the type of guy that will not show up to a particular service or jam session if he knows there are going to be spectators there, watching his every MOVE....The thing that makes Butch so GOOD at playing is his ORIGINALITY....Alot of times at musicals.....you have a crowd of musicians come to specifically check out Butch out to see if he is going to play some rediculous stuff and sometimes he will, but for the most part, he will fool everyone...and play the song soooo basic...And thats because he doesn't thrive off of attention. He is so far from that.

AND every Sunday night he gets down thats what i know to be fact and after service he always trying to some me stuff and just playing around on the organ just straight sickness so that y i told them to come on sunday nights at his daddy's church because he doesnt play alot any more. That really his pratice time if you ask him because he said since he doesnt really play alot he forgot alot of stuff he use to do. So just image Butch on the organ just praticeing. doing and after service. THATS JUST STRAIGHT SICKNESS. ;D

He set the bar so high when it comes to playing gospel/jazz music, and it sounds like so many people (mostly in the Lou of course) have been inspired to take their music to another level. The thing is, people around the country want a taste of what you all get in St. Louis. Butch is blowin' up this website by himself, and he hasn't said or typed a word. ;D :D ;) :)I see and hear why he is blowin' it up, and you guys have to encourage him to keep playing and not to slow down.....the world is watching. ;) If he slows down in using his gift, God will slowly take it away. :-\

Other than that I know you can find him on the Kennerly Temple Anniversary CD…but I don't know if you can find that outside of St. Louis.
On these CD's however he just plays in the pocket so he really doesn't sound too much different from a regular organist, but I love his work on The Gregg Haynes CD's esp. Vol. 2

Also I've been watching this thread and decided not to comment but I will say this…I don't know Butch but I've met him and heard him play he is truly amazing, however his humility was more amazing than his gift which I think is something we all should strive for. On Levi 'Too' King's newest project which can be purchased on www.metoomusic.com Butch sings on a song entitled "Heart of Worship" which truly encompasses our mission as musicians and how we fail as the chorus says "I'm going back to the heart of worship and its all about you, its all about you Jesus. I'm sorry Lord for the thing I've made it, when it's all about you, it's all about you. I just want us to keep that in mind when we're talking about who's the best and etc. Be blessed
