this is going to help ALOT of folks....especially if you already have a kit at home. this is for drummers in general, that can't play when at home, due to noise...
let me start by giving some background:
i've been "playing" the drums for about 11 years (seriously only about 7) and before today, i was only able to practice on acoustics only 1 day a week :-\ . i live in an apartment, so playing at home *was* out of the question.
i do, however, have a pearl RT kit which enabled me to practice things such as exercises, movement, etc (because of the mesh heads).
this was ok for a while, until i realized that i was not improving when it comes to musicality/creativity due to the lack of sound (mesh are completely silent). plus, it was just plain boring playing without sound.
i was going to buy an electronic kit, but due to lack of funds, (they run about $900 to $5000) i deaded that idea. i didnt want to play on a bunch of pads. (with the exception of the higher-end roland/yamaha kits...they feel pretty darn good)
then it hit me....
acoustic triggers!!!!
roland, ddrum, and pintech make triggers...which i'm sure work well, but again, i wanted to save money...plus i heard they don't work well with mesh (with the exception of the ddrums but they are EXPENSIVE...about $300). that, plus the module, cymbals, etc...the cost for everything would be too much. (might as well just buy an e-kit)
so i thought..."hey...why dont i just build the triggers myself?"
...after much thought...i deaded this idea as well (i don't have the patience, although they are pretty easy to make). instead, i bought triggers from a cat that makes custom triggers:

(pardon the graininess of the pics...they're from my cell phone)
Now i can play at ANY time....WITH sound... and without disturbing anyone! ;D ;D ;D
and it only cost me about $455 to convert everything (triggers, cymbals, roland drum module, cables)
if anyone is interested in how i put everything together, just holla!

Very nice indeed. I thought about doing something like that at first. But I figured by the time I get the RT kit, triggers and module. It would cost about the same as the Roland TD3 Kit, so I just went ahead bought the Roland kit. But good job with your kit!

It's basically a toy. Don't look for any distance out of it.

yea...i would've done the same if i didnt already have the RT...
in fact, i would only recommend this if you already have a practice kit (like a rt, swingstar, etc)
i have the td-3 module too...the rhythm coach is my favorite feature

it was just released a few weeks ago...
it's a little bit more money, but a much better option than the Ion (the dm5 module is a great module)

NOoooooooooooooooooo!! Don't do it. Those pads are sooo hard. I mean they actually hurt to play. Not a good way to go. When I used to work at Sam Ash, they tried to make us sell those and we came soooooo close to going on strike....FOR REAL! Trust me.....don't buy those!
