Heel up or down when playing double bass?
Just wanted to get some of your opinions!
-
Double Bass as in double pedal? or single pedal double kick action?
Either way I play heel down. Working on heel up tho. Just doesn't feel right to me for some reason.

Both. At a certain speed you cannot much help but to play heel up.
Currently as I am trying to develop the technique and control I play heel down. Dennis Chambers says that develops better control (in one of his vids). THomas Lang says that you should be able to pola ythe same stuff heel up or heel down.
I am just trying to get to first base right now, LOL.

Haha. Now I dont feel so bad! LOL. I have been alternating between services, playing heel up and down. I started out heel down, and moved to heel up, and I am very comfortable with both...I just need to work on speed and control.
God Bless.

I am really focusing more on my feet these days. A great mentor told me the same thing " you should know and strive to master both heel up and heel down.” Never limit yourself! Versatility is a great element. One….

i play semi heel up and down 8)!!!!!!!! go by sabe's advice and check out dennis and thomas videos. i play more with the ball of my foot where my heel is close to the heel plate. to me this postion offers better control and i dont find myself diggin the beater in the bass drum. hope this helps 8)

yea, try playin with both. once you develop both of those muscles, your feet will pretty much be able to do almost what your hands do...

I play heel up when we are playing a faster song because it is louder, but when we are playing a softer song I play heel down. Sometimes I feel like I can play double bass faster when I play heel down. It is harder for me to play fast heel up. Its almost like I am trying to use my legs too much when I play heel up. I should be using my ankles more I guess. Any advice?
-
Advice? As noted by many others on here, focus on control. Speed will come as you develop more control. Try aiming for endurance by practicing at a certain bpm for 15-30 mins at a time. Increase every two weeks, or after you feel comfortable.
Decrease or increase the time and bpm as necessary. That endurance will help you build control.
stop if it hurts. Endurance will help you buid up control, and speed will naturally follow.

I was thinking about using ankle weights. Good idea or not?

drumming is not about building muscles, you will hurt yourself really bad if you do that.
