Title: Do sometimes people think you're better than you really are?
Post by: playhear on April 11, 2006, 04:18:31 PM
This post is for intermediate musicians, like me.  Have you ever been out playing somewhere and someone thinks you're better than you really are?

I was out yesterday messing around with some special edition pianos at Costco.  I was playing some little R&B diddy.  A DJ from a prominent local radio station happens to walk by.  He gives me his card and wants me to do some sort of promotional work and lay down some tracks or something.  I tried to tell him that I'm not as good as he thinks I am.  He starts looking at me like "yeah right whatever".  I wish he had bumped into one of you cats that can really lay it down.

Actually, if one of you cats is in the northern SF Bay Area and can really lay it down on the piano, hit me on the personal message. I'll see how for real this guy is and pass along this lead.

Well its pretty easy to trick most people into thinking you are better than you actually are.  People do it all the time, espcially the "Transposers". :)

Maybe he sees somethiing in you that you don't see in yourself.  I think God has opened a door for you.  I mean if you really think about it....doing jingles for radio promos does not require a whole lot.....probably just some background chords......TALK MUSIC if you will.  Pray about it before you try talking yourself out of it.

While not exactly the same....a similar situation happened where someone heard my voice and asked me to come in and read some radio ads. I had never done radio work before. I was able to make some nice supplemental change back when I was living on a poor teachers salary.  Blessing come when you least suspect it.

Greetings!  I must say that I am sometimes overwhelmed when people applaude me on the way I play, when there are times that I don't feel that I am as good as they think I am.  God has truly blessed me with a strong and much needed talent and I won't take it for granted.  I sometimes feel embarassed when I am asked to play songs that I have not heard before due to the fact that I am not up to date on the most current contemporary music, but I will continue to do my best and I thank you all for all of your continued support.

First of all welcome to the LGM family 'msbambam' and I hear ya', I always feel embarrassed and uneasy when I am asked to play especially when the regular musician is present, and when this does happen there are those who are constantly telling me how I am improving and how good I sound, noticing all the new licks, movements and progressions I now use. I know I am practicing quite hard but still I feel that I am no way near the level that others are or even where I feel I should be.

Sometimes the anointing in you makes the difference.  I have had that experience also.

Transposing works......UNTIL you have to MODULATE!   But 4 real, the opposite is true also, I mean have you ever felt like ya just laid it down nasty...and people are lookin at ya like ya didn't do nuthin?  Sometimes non-musicians think it's way easier than it is.

Amen!Amen!Amen!

If the rest of the rule book is that helpful, I got 2 get a copy today!

Its enough haters that will stop you from getting off the ground(church musicians in particular); You better balance out your prop/hate ratio in Jesus name.

However, I do see you on that.  Especially when it comes to moms.  "Stop it I'm not that good."  I will have alter my vocabulary when it comes to that and just appreciate.

Playhear,
I would like to tell you to trust God on this, because I know he will not let you down and you will be blessed.

Your worst critic is yourself.

That being said, we underestimate ourselves alot of times because we have a certain status in our mind that we wont our sound to be, and when we dont get that status exactly, we begin to underestimate, looking over the fact that the status we ARE getting actually sounds good...especially to those whom A) are inexperienced on the instrument or B) Know little to nothing about it.

Yeah I get that sometimes. I think people under estimate me too. I just kinda need to get around more skill musicians to break out the mold Im in. I can pick stuff up if I see it played.

Hey 'Mysteryman'

I know what you mean, I'm always trying to get around skilled musicians to see if I can pick up anything as I play by ear and listening and seeing people that are better than me I think really helps me progress.

I play the clarinet in my school band and just a few months ago, I sounded like dying goose.  I'm getting a good sound from my clarinet now, but it seems like people think I'm really good, and I just don't think that way about myself.  I get this feeling that the other clarinets think I play better than them when they are just as good as i am.  i am the soloist, a spot which no one (including me) wanted.  I'm just stuck with it now.

Maybe i am just underestimating myself, but i still don't think i'm that good.

Well in Northern Cal, (SF/ Oakland/Bay) the whole musician thing is so cut throat in a sense, and everyone has this new style of playing that I too sometimes feel really like the least of the least, and I feel like I can't really even play... But in the last year, more people are asking for me to play, because folks want that old school church, and the young musicians (as if Im not 24 too) can't play it.  So I have come to this conclusion playhear and LGm ( don't want to type the offical name of the chu'ch) you have a place as a musician, and you may not be able to do what everyone else does, but be confident in what God gives you, and do it to the honor of God.  Use what you have, and let God anoint you for what YOU are supposed to be doing...

Yes, it happens a lot.  The reason I never say I am all that is because I have a humble spirit.  No matter how I progress, I will never consider myself any better than the next.  Now if you want a topic, try "Musicians who think they are all that but are really not".  I know someone who talks a lot of trash about how other musicians play and he himself can't even play a song right.  He has been playing for years now and he still sucks.  See, the devil will make a monkey out of you when you let pride swell your head.  People will tell you how good you sound, but when you leave they will drag you through the mud.
