I have an old 76-key yamaha synth that I practice and play on. My question is would my playing be enhanced by playing a 88-key, hammer action, weighted keyboard? And if so how? I need to how important this is because I might just have to scrape up some change and upgrade.

usually most of the 88 keys are weighted keys and it will help on strengthing the fingers and build up speed. what i did is i purchased a M-audio 88 pro sx, and i used a midi chord to connect to my 61 key roland xp-10, so when i play the 88 keyboard, it will gerenate the sounds from the roland. and it saved me tons of money, but the only thing it will enhance is strength and speed.

I use to ask this question too... In my opinion, I feel as long as you have 76 keys, your good to go. There are a few pianists out there who WON'T play on anything but 88 keys. All I need is 76.
On the other hand, since most 88-key boards are usually weighted, as my man said earlier, it is real good to use. A lot of musicians out there now are 'hurting' now b/c they've played so long on non-weighted keyboards. They're starting to get Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. So I'd say, if your 76-key synth is semi-weighted or weighted, ur good to go... if not, u might want to do some more saving and get that weighted action brah...

I really appreciate all the advice.

I think it's better to go with a keyboard that best represents the instrument that you to play. If you play the piano at your church, weighted keys will help get your chops up. I have been on a 76 key Korg for the last 13 years and when I get on a real piano, I get worn out real fast because I don't have strength or stamina to play a whole service. Seasoned pianists with those jazzy fast chops have callouses on thier fingers. You won't get those playing on flemsy plastic keys. I just upgraded to a MO 8 and I am now able to condition my fingers.
