Dumb. Have a friend who learns by ear. i've been trying to get him to take lessons and he feels that since he teaches himself how to play, he's okay. He really does not have the feel for a service but has made up songs to fit in(not churchy). he doesn't like to be called out or asked to play in a certain key(which he does not know) and sometimes refuses to move off the keyboard.
You know, if you are a beginner, you will share and try to pick up licks and things. Not here. What advice can you give for him, so he won't think others are picking on him or trying to show him up?

To add to this, if you ask him what key he's in, of course you get a dumb look and answer(no particular key) just playing. yeah right.

How is he playing for a service when he doesn't know what he's doing? At this point, all that you can do is pray for him; encourage him to gain an understanding of what he's doing or else he's just a copycat and not an originator.

He's into music(rap) so he's familiar with the keyboard. I let him use one on J. Griggs tapes for shouting music and he caught on to that. When i say he can't hold a service, I mean he doesn't play talk music(makes up songs). He doesn't know the fundamentals of music. Truest me, if you call him a copycat, much offends him. I'm just trying to get him to take classes to learn scales and other things that will enhance his style of play.

OK. He's into just rap music, can't really play church songs/music, and has a big head already and he's just a beginner?
Exactly HOW did he become the church musician again?

Let me clarify, he can play. He's learned all the licks from J. Griggs tapes and plays well. What I'm basically saying is what Sabian Night was saying. As far as knowing notes, modulation, keys for that matter. For instance, We play a certain song in C. If you ask him what key is he in and you want to follow him, he'll tell you I don't know, I just play all over the board.
When singers come in and some says put me in Ab, he looks at them as if they have cursed him out. He has a good ear, but that won't help all the time. You know how singers are if you are trying to find the key as they sing, most just stop and say, I'm doing it accap.(He get very angry) Therfore, I try to encourage him to at least learn his keys. Everything is not in C.
