ok, so my church is going to purchase a new bass, they don't want to spend over $1000, which is cool for me. I currently have a Yamaha 5 string, passive, low end. I am still looking for something with a sweet jazzy tone but not too brite of a sound, but not too deep either. that's the problem I'm havn with my current bass. I guess I am somewhat partial to the yamaha trb series, but I am re ally looking at the ibanez. I'm really not sure. I'm playing gospel/jazz and really want something that's going to let me do some poping and slappn but also sound good when I'm thumbing... any suggestions are much appreciated. God bless!

$1000 mmmmmm
1. american/japan fender jazz bass
2. warwick corvette
3. lakland
4. used tobias
5. the new ken smith that looks like a fender
-
is that Ken smith under a grand?

The Geddy Lee fender Jazz Bass is the bargain. For sound and versatality you can't go wrong. And the price between $600 and $700 easy. Jazz bass with a thinner neck. Really nice bass. I own a range of basses P's, Jazz and an Ibenez. I'm old school. Only four strings. That is good stewardship. That is for passive. If you want active try any of the Ibenez basses there is a great line under $600. All quality. You don't have to spend big bucks for great bass. Blessings and if you need help pray and ask the Lord where you have Peace you will have your answer.

I would go with a fender or even specter legend. My boy who is sponsored by them, has some legends and they sound great.

I would assume he is refering to the Ken Smith that copies the Marcus Miller Fender that can be had new for about $750.
As for the topic in question, I like Ibanez as well (own a 4string about to get a 5), here are my suggestion. I am confident that these basses will cover your every need and more.

Great picks, I was about to purchase the SR905 before I purchased my schecter. I like the tone that it produced. Nice crisp highs, with deep bottom if played through the correct cabs.

Mr Bassics......WELCOME TO LGM !!!!!
At $1,000 I'd be sweeping the used market, specifically looking for.....
- Music Man Bongo
- Lakland 55-02
- Peavey Cirrus
- Fender Marcus Miller
- Fender Geddy Lee
- There are a number of Yamaha and Ibanez basses I'd also consider
Peace,
James

Two members have already suggested Laklands. A new 55-01 is $700. A great bass for sure. A used 55-02 would be around $1000. Either one would be a big step up with lots of tone shaping capabilities.
I have two Lakland four stringers and love them.

heres the info on the ken smith KSD. they like $700 brand new
-
wow, lots of Lackland and Ibanez suggestions. maybe yamaha is out of the question. the ken smith sounds real tempting.
-
Brand new Yamaha TRB1005! $799
-
You're on the right track with Ibanez. I bought an Ibanez Soundgear 6-string and I absolutely love it. Ibanez has some great tones and they're easy and comfortable to play.

hehehehe me lose me head somtyme
but i think this is you best value and ken smith basses are a proven product along with the fact that Mr. Smith is still involved in all his basses being made.

big lots has a large selection of bass guitars in the toy section :D
-
1) American Fender Jazz (4 or 5 string)
2) Peavey Cirrus (5string)
3) Warwick Corvette (4 or 5string) ** A little heavier than others****
I personally love my American Fender Jazz Deluxe, even more than my Warwick FNA Jazzman, because of the Fender tone and versatility. A lot of people are sleeping on the Peavey Cirrus, but if you can find one try it out. You may end up buying it. Most importantly, just pick whats best and feels best to you b/c you have to play it and grow with it.

I'm in a similar situation. I'm saving up about 1500. 00 to get a Lakland 55-02 Deluxe (used).

BTW it's pronounced with a long A, as in Lakeland. I found this out on their website.

$1,500 is more than they go for new. You should be able to get a used 55-02 for no more than $850.
Peace,
James

You're absolutely right malthumb. I should have said I'm saving up to 1500.00 and I'll get something used if it's nice, or new and pick the finish I want, up to my limit. Any way your posts are always informative and I appreciate your willingness to share your wisdom.

Ibanez has a great sound and the neck feels good.
Yamaha has a good sound and the neck feels good too.
Tobias has a great sound and a very wide range, the neck feels wonderful.
-
Welcome to the club. Hope you find something you like.
-
I'm in the market for a fender Jazz. So that would be my buy.
-
If I were a righty, I'd get a Peavey Cirrus. Another option is the new MTD Design Z5 (or Z4 if you're a 4 string player).
God Bless,
-J

With $1000 a lot of very good second hand instruments are available to you such as Musicman Stingray, Warwick, Fender Deluxe, Lakland...to give you an idea.
If you prefer brand new the world is your oyster for that budget. I particularly like the MTD Heir, Ibanez SR505, Spector Legend, Lakland Skyline 55-01, Conklin GT-5, Godin Freeway (Leaftop), Yamaha BB145.
Any of those basses are great value for money for $1000 or under.
-
Before you buy, try them. My church gave me $1000 and I was into the Brand name until
I played them. Most of the Brand ( Ken ,Tobias and others ) I found the Ibanez sound just as good.
There were no big difference. The Conklin was very good.
I picked the Hohner B BASS VI ( six string ) natural. It's about what sounds good to you.
I have a Peavey T-40 that sounds like Marcus Miller Bass. So! I don't need a Fender

Well, today is finally the day. Im going out to pick up my new baby. Last week when I was at guitar center I was trying a bunch of differnt basses and was honestly pretty dissappointed with all the initial prospects I had in mind. The last bass I tried was a Schetcher Stiletto 5 string. The thing sounded wonderful, the action was fast and it had a great tone. I think I may of had lower expectations of it so when I heard it was pretty happy. None the less, we will see what I decide to go with. I will keep you all posted!
-
Well, I went and picked up my new baby today. Unfortunately Im not really happy with my purchase. I ended up with the SR506 6 string. Firstly, Im not real familiar with the 6 but its not too difficult to navigate around. But the main thing is now that I have it home, Im not really liking it. Im not sure what happend, it sounded great in the music strore, but now im home playing the thing and im kinda dissappointed. I paid $630 for it. They had a BTB, used, but because of the pawn laws they could not release it for 30 days.
Im not sure whether I should keep it or run to the store tomorrow and get something differnt. I have 30 days so to return it, so maybe I will play it for a while and see how it turns out!

I say play it for a while. Below is a picture of my SR506 on the left. It sounds great to me. Actually, I'm selling mine only because I'm saving up to get a MTD 6 string and I know someone that really wanted my bass. Other than that, I would keep it. Now, the BTB does sound great. I'm thinking about getting the BTB455 myself.

I think the one I was looking at was the BTB1205. The thing was amazing. I was playing the 506 today, and I have to admit, its kinda growing on me, but that BTB :o
-
I will admit, that BTB does put out an amazing sound. Those bartolini's with the 18 volt circuit is something else.
-
As it happens I was just recently in this situation. The difference was I wanted to limit my spending to $500. I purchased a Traben Neo 4 Limited (4 string). The reasons are as follows:
- Beautiful splated maple top
- Active electronics
- 45 day return policy (from musicansfriend.com)
I just played my first service with it this past weekend was pleasently suprised. It's very bright but the preamp provides plently low end presence. The neck is a jazz style neck (which suits me) and the bridge was easily adjustable. This bass also has alot of sustain (which is both good and bad).
Since I'm a Carvin fanatic I would remiss if I didn't mention the B4.
