I have a Compaq Presario/w98se and Presario laptop/wXP. Haven't had any sound problems here. (Dreaming of a Dell XPS or 8300)

TRY GOING TO YOUR CONTROL PANEL AND PLAYING AROUND WITH YOUR "SOUNDS AND AUDIO DEVICES" THEN GO TO "AUDIO" IN THIS SETUP MENU IT WILL SHOW YOU THE MIDI DEVICE YOU HAVE SETUP. MOST COMPUTERS HAVE THE "MICROSOFT GS WAVEABLE SYNTH" AND/OR THE MPU-401 FOR THEIR MIDI DEVICES. UNLESS YOU'RE USING CAKEWALK THE MICROSOFT GS WAVEABLE SYNTH WORKS ON MOST MIDI PROGRAMS EX. "VANBASCOS KARAOKE PLAYER" OR FINALE. CHECK IT OUT AND LET ME KNOW IF YOU HAVE ANY OTHER QUESTIONS. OH YEAH I HAVE HEWLETT.

I have a Compaq Presario 7578 but i erased my hard drive and made it a double booted system. Have Windows98se on C drive and Windows XP Professional on the D drive. I have problems with the sound as well but it's because the driver doesn't actually support for XP and XP is so picky of what u installed on there so Bronzee, if you upgrade to XP that may be your problem as well. :D :D I want to build my own computer because it's cheaper and i know what i want to put on there.

I agree---I think it's a conflict with the sound card and how it is assigned. I have a compaq laptop I used for years and then went to Dell only for bigger hard drive. I like the compaq though too.
