Title: Footwear for Drummers
Post by: JFunky on July 18, 2006, 09:06:32 PM
...this is a spinoff from the "Dress" Thread.  I figuered I'd give you guys and gals ideas of comfortable footwear for the drumkit.  Maybe your church will allow it.  These sneakers also come in all black.

Pumas, just like Lang uses. I Liked the ones Jkay showed!!!!!! Those are nice!!!!!!!!!!!!! I play in my church dress shoes, never really thought about if my feet are comfortable or not. I might try some casual shoes.

God Bless.

I learned how to play in church. So I always played with dress shoes on. Actually, no tennis shoe I've ever worn is as light as a dress shoe. Also, dress shoes are not as bulky at the tip, so they don't get in my way at the toe.

You guys are crazy!!!!!! STACY ADAMS ALL THE WAY, BABYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I see folk have forgotten the orginal drummers shoe that Dennis Chambers use to endorse back in the day in Modern Drummer magazine. They are a martials and bodybuilding workout shoe.... Otomix. Dennis use to rock the high tops with the top laces undone.

Or get like all the Freddie Gruber students and wear the black dance slippers like Weckl, Pert, Steve Smith.

I'd hate to get in a fight with you while wearing these. Better yet, I'd hate to be the person sitting next to you when you break out in a Holy Ghost dance in dem shoes. LOL
I'd have to bring the peroxide and some bandages to church for the shins.

For about a year in a half it's been my trusty old black Lugz boots. After watching Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez live and Antonio Snachez I figure if they can I can. Harder than they make it look but now it times to look in to som Addidas or Puma or some Otomix. Leaning on the Otomix but if Foot Locker outlet has the hookup or the Adidas Outlet then it is on,  ;D

I feel the same away about the Air Jordan line... not so much about the Jumpman line...

Why start a crutch in your playing!? You should be able to play in any type on foot wear (with in reason) Vinnie C once did a clinic in work boots back when they were in fashion!

lol @ Kung-Fu grip!

I agree; for the (Air) Jordan purists, the Jumpman line is a lesser shoe.

I AGREE WITH BBD. WHAT IF YOU WERE SOMEWHERE WHERE YOU DIDN'T PLAN ON PLAYING BUT YOU DID ANYWAY? YOU WOULD BE OUT OF LUCK.

DRUMMERS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE ABLE TO PLAY IN ANY CONDITIONS. ORGANIST TOO.

...nah bro.  You're misunderstanding the purpose of the thread.  Some people need to feel comfortable while playing.  There are certain shoes that we may own that might not work for playing the kit.  Mine is a brown pair of Stacy Adams that I own.  So in the case of that, you can switch off your shoes and play with a comfortable shoe.  I know we've been displaying a lot of comfortable shoes but yes, all of my life, I've been playing on my " Air Church's".  From Payless to Stacy Adams. ;D  This is just to open up a lil' conversation and it was a "Spinoff Thread" from the Dress Code Thread.

...I saw a clip of Spanky rippin' it with a pair of Timberlands on by the way.  Yeah, I said it, "Spanky".

NAW I GET THE THREAD. I WAS JUST MAKING THE STATEMENT. AS A MATTER OF FACT, I WOULD RATHER PLAY IN MY AMERICAN EAGLE'S THAN ANY OTHER SHOE. THEY FELL SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO GOOD ON A DW 9000.

BUT I WAS JUST MAKING THE STATEMENT THAT DRUMMERS SHOULDN'T CRIPLE THERESELVES INTO PLAYING IN A CERTAIN SHOE.

Here's a different angle: Do you have a 'favorite' stick, right? That's no different from having a preference in what a person prefers to wear on their feet while drumming.

To line things up with my initial question, I can play with any stick, but I won't feel as comfortable with that larger/smaller/shorter\longer, etc.  Professional artists has their stick of choice/preference (of course, they could play with any stick, but it goes full circle with the word 'comfort'), and it should not be any different when it comes to footwear.

Would you come and mow my lawn in the Florida heat in a 100% wool suit, complete with a tie? Sure you could do it, but would you feel comfortable in it, as opposed to wearing mesh shorts and a white tee shir t?

Just a thought.

I agree that we shouldn't have a crutch in foot wear but I know that we have to optimize our environment to be condusive to us performing our best. Weckle, Steve Smith, Neal Pert etc take their "playing" shoes where ever they go. A recent add in Modern DRumm for Vic Firth fetaured THomas Lang and he keeps his Puumas in his stick bag. Bottom line we have to keep our tools together and ready at all times. I keep a stick bag in the car for emergencies . I have been known to take a pair of sticks with me to dinner inside the pocket of my dinner jacket just in case an opportunity to jam comes up. I plan to invest in a nice leather bag for such occassions as well as keep a pedal and throne in the car.

No we shouldn't make excuses of crutches but we should be prepared with what we need. I have heard business men that keep suits on standbye for imprompt to meetings.

If what's in the package is better than the packaging then we have nothing to worry about.

So I went to my local Journeys to check out the "JKAY" pumas, and they just happened to be on sale for $59.99. However there were 2 problems...number 1, they didnt have the solid black, they had the one that is black and white. and Problem number 2, The biggest size they had was size 8, which even if I had my magic stretching cream, it would have needed a miracle to fit them on my size 13 foot. ......... . I walked away distraught. More shopping I will go. I tried Footlocker, Finish Line, Foot Action, Shoe Depot, Just for Feet, Journeys. Who else sells PUMA?

...okay so I went to the local malls here in O-town and I saw the "JKAY" Pumas for $89.99 at like 5 different stores.  They also come in other colors but the all black looks great.

...I also saw the Pumas that I posted and they are $89.99.  The ones that I saw where black and khaki but you can get the all blacks ordered by whatever store or on Eastbay Catalog.

...both of these shoes are really light so that works out well for the drummer that needs to feel comfortable.  That's your update for today.  Stay tuned for more developments on LGM Drummers Forum News. ;)
