To keep it simple...mono is one side (either left or right not both)...stereo is left and right

Yeah I know that ::) but what is the difference?
Does one give more clarity or something?
Which one is better for using a keyboard live?
Thanks for replying. :)

THINK ABOUT IT LIKE THIS.
MONO IS ONE AND STEREO IS TWO. RIGHT?
IF YOU WERE IN THE STUDIO; AND YOU HAD TO MIC A GRAND PIANO. AND, YOU HAD THE OPTIONS OF USING ONE MIC DIRECTLY IN THE CENTER, AND USING TWO MICS. (ONE MIC ONE THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE PIANO AND ONE MIC ONE THE LEFT SIDE.)
YOU WOULD CHOOSE THE TO MICS RIGHT?
BASICALLY, THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MONO AND STEREO IS, STEREO HAS A MORE IN-DEPTH SOUND THAT MONO DOES.
LIKE THE EXAMPLE I USED WITH THE GRAND PIANO, THAT ONE MONO MIC WOULD DO THE JOB AS GOOD AS THE TWO STEREO MICS.
THE STEREO MICS WOULD PICK-UP MORE. AND TAKE INTO A BETTER DEPTH.

Stereo is better for live gigs. This is the only way I will do it. Bishop Cole

Thanks TheReturn and bishopcole for replying.
Well the keyboard in church is hook up on mono because that is the way my friends put it. They don't really know nothing about sound but they try. Well I will put the cable on the side that is not mono to see how it sounds, and if I like it I'll keep it that way. I'll change it this wednesday to see how it sounds. Wednesday is rehearsal so I will have time to experiment. ;D
Anybody else feel free to respond.

WELL WHAT EQUPIMENT DO YOU HAVE?
USUALLY WHEN YOU ARE ATTEMPTING TO RUN A KEYBOARD STEREO, YOU DON'T HAVE STEREO JACK AND A MONO JACK. YOU USUALLY HAVE A LEFT(mono) JACK AND A RIGHT JACK. WHEN YOU WANT TO RUN A KEYBOARD MONO, YOU JUST PLUG UP ONE CABLE TO THE LEFT(mono) JACK AND CALL IT A DAY. lol
BUT WHEN YOU WANT TO RUN A KEY STEREO YOU PLUG ONE CABLE UP TO THE LEFT(mono) JACK AND A DIFFERENT CABLE TO THE RIGHT JACK.

Hmm Didn't know this. So what your saying is that every keyboard sounds good on mono? The church has a korg triton EX, that is what I use.
Thanks. :)

Most amps are mono (with the exception of the Roland KC-550 that does support stereo....with 2 mono jacks per channel of course), cause they only give you one input for each channel...but you can make it stereo if you have more than 1 channel, then you plug one to channel 1 and the other on channel 2 and you will hear a difference.

Yeah I know that ::)
So why you ask then?!? LOL!!! (just kidding) :D :D

Well I can tell you this. If you using Mono you won't be able to get the full use of your effects. effects always sound better in stereo. You can here the waves switch from speaker to speaker...
-
In addition... if you have a sterio mixer that everything is run into. You have to know which is which of the 2 cables. at the mixer you have to pan the left channel all left and the right channel all right.. the channels from the keyboard that is. If your church is using a sterio mixer then they may have a sterio amp or one amp per side.
Hopefuly that didn't further confuse you

Nope. Took me a few times to read it carefully but I got it. :D

Somehow I don't think for now they would worry themselves about panning effects... But you do bring up a good point.
Derik - if you don't have stereo you may sometimes have an instrument come out of just your main left speaker(s)... & you stand there thinking whats going on?
It's because the keyboards signal is being sent to ONLY that left channel. Yes, you could just use the pan function on your church mixer BUT it will decrease the overall volume & depth of sound you could get out of that system.
If you had your keyboard hooked up in stereo you will hear the full sound across both left & right channels. Which means your keyboard will come the WHOLE system - giving it that full sound that some here are referring too.
Also a special note (& incase you didn't know) if you are using Jack or 3.5mm cables make sure you know which are mono & which are stereo. As you can see below - One line = mono. Two lines = stereo.

Late question....
So it's better to buy a cable with two lines for keyboards?

I say if the only output is just a phones jack...If not use 2 cables ( one for left and right).
