Title: What Do You Do When The Person Leading The Song Sounds HORRIBLE
Post by: ndel on August 20, 2006, 11:07:16 PM
Have you ever been in a service and the person singing the lead to the song  was   so horrible that they were funny?  I mean hysterically funny and everybody is in agreement that they are listening to a horrific performance.  True, it doesn't happen often but when it does
What    do you do?  I've seen some sisters get busy looking in their purse for some unknown item. Then there's the old wonder what's up on the ceiling ploy. I've even seen the shoulders  hunched down, head bowed, finger in the air exit.

I heard this lady and she was so glad to be leading a song she tried to do everything that she had seen anybody else do like "wait a minute, I think I'll sing that again", and "this is my verse here"  she sounded funny and I had to fight hard to keep a straight face.  Well, what do you do?

You continue to fight hard and keep a straight face. Have a little talk with Jesus and ask Him to help her out. Were you playing an instrument, in the choir or just in the congregation?

Read the bulletin; read your Bible; read the stained glass windows; read the hymnal; etc.

To be honest, I do try my hardest to just look down, and not laugh, and as SJ said, read the bulletin, etc.  But then there are other times when I just can't control myself, and just give off this look everybody says I have  :-\ when something don't sound right or I will just look up and smile.   :D

She did WHAT ndel?   :D :D

We have a P&W Leader that has this 'issue'.  She'll get up there and sing in her usual key of 'shE Flat (out wrong)' and have the audacity to say 'The enemy don't want me to sang this mawnin' y'all.  He tryna take my voice.'  Now, don't get me wrong, we've all had our bad days...BUT EVERY SUNDAY!!!!?  I do the same thing every time.  I look around for a second, do an about face, walk out the door and hope nobody hears me laughing hysterically.   ;) :D

Now, that should be a clear indication to her or her 'friends'. Someone needs to let her know, seriously.

The MOM has even taken the time to work with her a few times,  :)  she had told her to record herself and listen, (don't know if she did or not) but there are times when she will be on her note  ;D then all of a sudden  :o ?/? ::) she just flys off of it like a rocket, and you hear this BAD note come out of her mouth  ::) :o  and lets not talk about when she is in the choir (soprano), on the front row and you are in front of her directing.  :o   :D

We have a soprano in our section that gets the emboldened (Help me SJon!) treatment above.  It's a sight to behold.   :D :D :D :D
Sometimes our AV crew will turn her mic UP to make sure the elderly saints can hear the *snort* joyful noise (cacophony) she makes.

Okay, we have two sopranos, one is actually the choir director. They have this semi-opra squeakin mouse voices. I'm good when my sister is not a service, cause I just give a thank you Jesus praise God smile...BUTTT when my sister is there I can't help but to recall all the comments that we have made about these women' voices.

I know, please pray for me.

My husband who rarely speaks bad about anyone...once came in the room and asked why don't the pastor stand up and yanked the microphone cord out of the plug whne he see's "C" get up to sing...

I never thought anyone would ask that question..well for my church..well for my Youth Choir no one really sings the lead horrible because when we are at rehearsals if they sound terrible and I cant find a replacement..I will do the lead myself as I would have already known the song and I have a wide vocal range..However if I go to another church or concert or wherever and I hear a terrible lead..my eyes start running water because I really want to laugh..but I cant because everyone knows me as a singer and will say I am laughing because I know I can sing..I think the bottom line is that they are doing it for God and even if we do laugh they are singing for his glory.

Oh man, I laugh! I put my head down between my legs and laugh! People look at me but, I dont' care. Its funny because the same girl who tried to be so critical towards me when I sung, gets up there and murders a song. Listen this is rule #1 if you are an alto you don't need to try and sing a soprano song if you cant sing. Someone has mislead this girl and told her she was an contralto! not so! She sounds a hot mess even the children choir laugh at her.

Well, I've been in those situations.  If I'm in the audience and that happens, I HAVE to get up and walk out!  I would be laughing so hard, I couldn't control myself.  Afterwards, I would probably offer the pastor a free choir consultation.   :-\

Since I was knee-high to a cricket i can remember hearing some hetroscoius singing. And as i becaome started my music ministry I played for a church where NOBODY could hold a tune even if they had a collection plate. I simply learned to have a deaf ear.  But now that I'm older and wiser I either: keep playing in the key I started in or stop playing altogether because I refuse to have my name attached to someone else's FILTHY, STINKIN', BURNIN' HOT MESS!

Well I think you need to offer help. I don't think laughing or just straight up not playing is wrong. Yeah sometime you can't help yourself. But the Lord will accept all praise no matter how bad it sounds to us it is music to his ear. So we should never stop the flow and worship of God because we don’t like it. Just don’t dwell on the sound coming from the person dwell on the words and begin to create an atmosphere of worship. Then you will no longer her that persons sing because it all about you and GOD in that moment.  :)

The bible says Make a joyful noise.  Everyone is not blessed with the gift to sing harmonously or even pleasantly, but she does have a right to make a joyful noise to her God  It may hurt your ears, but pray for her do not laugh at her.  she is a child of the King, just as everyone else. She has right to praise Him.  I agree music should be in a manner to usher; however, sometimes, the lyrics themselves are more powerful than the key, the tone, the pitch and THE INSTRUMENTS.

Ease up people.  She may not have voice like others, but she is willing to give back to God what He has given her and I am sure that where it might hurt your ears.  It is like sweet, sweet music to HIS.

First of...let's see... who selected this person to lead this song and was he/she the only person willing to lead?
