Title: MTD Zephyr basses?
Post by: ddwilkins on August 30, 2006, 08:51:55 PM
Has anyone tried out the new MTD Z4 or Z5 basses?  I'm eyeing one of these real hard.  They look great but the nearest store that sells them is over 100 miles away.

I tried one of these and and I loved it. Fast neck, and that famous MTD slap and pop sound!!! Not the American version but its great!! I thought long and hard about getting one (Still thinking), but I just couldn't do it at the time. There is a place is Baton Rouge, LA that sells them for $999 which is fairly decent. here's a link:

AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW GOOD CHOICE THEY ARE REAL CLOSE TO THE WAY MY TOBIAS SOUND ON THE POST.
SAME WEIGHT, SAME PICK UPS, WOOD IS DIFFERENT BUT BODY IS STILL TOP QUALITY THE WAY MICHEAL SETS THE ELECTRONICS IS WHAT MAKES THE BASS STAND OUT. TRY THE MTD WEBSITE THEY MIGHT HAVE SOME AUDIO SAMPLES

I really like the way they look, but I must play one to see how they feel and sound.

Yeah we both love our Schecters, but I need something that will produce more slap and pop sound.

My boy from Bass BootCamp just bought one and he said he loved it.  For me it would be an even trade.  I'm trying to get the American 635.  I don't believe that make MTD Zs in 6 string.

I'll have one by March...I'm believe God and saving my money.  I may have to wait for a while but I'll have one eventually.  I don't want another bass that I will be coveting others basses.  Like WoW...that's nice!  No, I'll save and get my own. ;) :D

A 6 string Z is supposed to be coming in a few monthes.  Do a search over on talkbass.com in the "bass guitars" section.  There's a pretty big thread covering alot of info on these basses.

I had my heart set on getting one until I found the deal on my Carvin.  If/When the 6-string lefty's are in production, I may just have to get one since I've been wanting a 6'er for a while  :)

i want one as well.  I want one as well and if there were one at the local shop I would pick it up.  I just want to get the feel of the bass before I do anything like buying a 1K bass.

I would trade my schecter if the MTD was comfortable enough and had a great sound.

WHAT?!!?!?!!?! *faints*

;D lol, jk man.  I'd probably be willing to part with my Shector as well if the MTD was nice enough (it'd have to be a 6'er though).

Goodness, that is a pretty wide fretboard!! :o I don't play 6 strings but if I did, I probably go with something with tighter string spacing since I wouldn't be 'slapping' on it!

I consulted the main man on MTD basses, Gouche, and he said that these are killers basses.  He recommended getting them.  So looks like I will be having a Z5 in the near future.

Don't get too shocked by the width of the neck and string spacing.  I have played a Z5 and the neck is fast and very comfortable, if maybe slightly too thin.  I have to admit, the Z6 does look a bit of a handful.

Because of its price it is putting itself into the firing line of other basses like Lakland, Music Man and Warwick.  I am naturally bias towards Warwick, but if my head spoke before my heart I would go for the MTD Zephyr.  It plays great, looks great and has a lot more subtleties compared the other usual suspects.  However, there were a couple of things that I didn't like:

Bridge - It looked and felt pretty cheap and the very thin base plate on the Z5 that I played on wasn't even screwed on tightly...there was a gap between the base plate and the body.

Frets - There we a few frets that I noticed that were not dressed very well.  A couple of them were actually quite sharp at the edges and were very noticeable when you ran your fingers over them.

Not really a good sign of build quality and that's quite shocking to say that about an MTD instrument.

Dude...I'm all for the six...I didn't know they had them so I never really considered the Z6 but I have to now that they are on the market.  Somebody tell me the difference between this and the American.  I have a few friends know Mike personally and they'll get the scoop.  I might have to snatch on of these up in a few days if I can find one.

Michael Tobias builds the American basses here in USA and the Zephyr's are manufactured in Korea.

I spoke to Mike personally over the phone when I ordered my MTD 535 5yrs ago.  Really friendly and helpful guy.  Chris May from Overwater put me in contact with him to discuss the build options.  Mike knows how to look after his customers and will share his knowledge and experience to help you get what you really need.  You get a lot more than just a bass from MTD.  I was very impressed.

Yall didn't think your boy was connected.  I just got this message from a close friend.

" just spoke to Mike Tobias.  He told me that the pro-type for the Z6 is at his house (He's out of town) for him to give the final stamp of approval.  The first shipment should arrive in stores in late October."
