Title: New snare in the works...
Post by: Ibilddrums on September 11, 2006, 09:56:37 PM
This one will be nice and simple, a classic.
I'm making this for myself, but it might go up for sale after a while... I don't know.... we'll see.

I love the sound of walnut. This shell is a 5x13 solid black walnut stave shell.
The hardware will be here on Wednesday, which will be Black Tube lugs and black hoops.
I got the Black R Class strainer today...
The finish will be a simple satin oil finish...

Like I said, I'm building this for myself but I might sell it after a little while...
If anyone on here thinks this is a shell you can't live without in your aresenal
hit me up in the next couple of days and we might work something out...

A standard snare like this will usually sell for about $500-$600.. Can't give an exact price now because
I have some other alterations in mind that I have not committed to yet....

In any case here's a couple of snapshots of the shell in question....

Refer to Ronald's article in Modern Drummer July 2006.. He talks about his drum tuning. I don't remember specifics.

ronald uses 13x7, 14x5.5 and sometimes 12x4 tama maple starclassics with reinforcement rings.

he uses coated heads tuned high high high.

basically tune as a high as you can before it sounds choked and have the snares loosened off more than you'd think; that adds a little sustain to the short dry sound you get with tight snares.

Specifically Ronald states in his Modern Drummer July/2006 article....

pg. 91 , July 2006, Modern Drummer Magazine - Ronald Brunner Jr.
REMO Emperor on snare batters clear Ambassadors on the snare side.....  "I tune for attack rather than tone. I like my drums to smack. I am not into ringing, open-tone toms, like what Dave Weckl pioneered.....But I'm into attack, almost like a full kit of snare drums..... I tune my kit a little more jazzy than other cats who play fusion. I tune my rack toms a little higher to focus on the highs and mid frequencies.... MD: How do you tune your toms high and not get a ringing sound?  For the toms, I keep the bottom heads fairly loose and the top heads tighter For my bass drum, I like a little bit of a jazzy tone. So I tune it kind of high, especially the batter head. And both heads on my snare are cranked pretty high.... It's all about having an identifiable sound. If you don't have a sound, you are not going to stick out. Your drums are an extension of your personality. And you can tell how a cat is going to play by their personality... It's important to know who you are and put that on the drumset"
