Title: The best keyboard to buy
Post by: KyMuzik on September 15, 2006, 10:21:00 AM
Help me out, while I'm learning to play the keyboard my church needs to get another one because the guy that used to play had his own and took it.  Whats would be the better keyboard for church services?  I was told that any of the Motifs were good because they have some of the best sounds in the business, but I know the tritons are good too, so can someone help me on this as well?

Congratulations on your entry into the minister of music position.  I would say that the best keyboard to get would...yea...be any of the Motifs.  But another to look at would be the Roland VR 760.  Its a combination of the VK 7 and VK 8.  It's a hott! board doc.  You'll be very pleased with it.  I got it and I won't trade it for nothing!!  Check it out! 8)

Try the Roland Fantom-X, good pianos and rhodes on that one.
The motif-es is good also.

Yeah I wanted one of those. I was thinking that if someone did that they would make alot of money.

you can't go wrong with a motifs, fantoms or a triton.

I agree with you "2tight". Always have a list of things that you require and find the keyboard that best suits that specification and in my opinion the Motifs, Fantoms and Tritons tend to best suit most specifications musicians have.

Welcome to the LGM family, KyMuzik!

Try looking into the Motifs!  You'll be amazed at the quality of sound!

Be blessed, and let the Lord use you!

The triton is good coz it is fairly easy to operate and the sounds are kinda cool.

i say a Fantom, best all around board. motif is great for goespel, urban music, not as much for anything electronic or edgy. korg has the weakest piano sounds of the big three, but there layered sounds are probably the best.

You should first set a "budget".  The Fantom, Triton and Motif are all nice, but if you don't havr $2,000+ to spend on a board, then you shouldn't ge these.

A little harsh there jlynnb1 .

But you most probably right man.

They pretty bad.

Some people know this, others don't but the true secret to a good sounding board is the "AMP".  I don't care if you have a Motif, Trton or Fantom, pipe it through a sorry amp and see how it sounds. :)

But on the flip side, if you take a Casio and pipe it through a good amp, it can do wonders.

As far as Amp's I say Roland puts out good ones.

I would like to know the best keyboard to buy under $500.

Look at Alesis QS6.2 (61 keys). It has very decent sounds.

Then again, the Casio WK-3700 (76 keys) has very good sounds, too. But the WK series boards by Casio look a bit childish, if that matters to you. The Casio Privia is a very good 88 key performance keyboard. But it has only 10 or so tones if that matters to you.

Hope this helps

Like stated earlier. The Fantom Line is a pretty decent all around keyboard. The Motif/Mo series are all around and better (with the bass/piano splits) and then Korg is a good keyboard for horns and synths ONLY!!!!

Tell'em one more time Bossman!!!   When you go to guitar center, or Sam Ash, or wherever it is you go,  they got those boards hooked up to studio quality monitors  or high quality amps.  Don't get me wrong,  the boards yall are talking about are nice, but you could take a less expensive board and pipe it through a High quality monitor or amp and you would be surprised at what you hear.

I agree that whoever does the casio line, needs to fire the industrial designer who did the packaging ( but maybe it really does make a difference in the cost).  But the Privia and Wk Series don't sound bad, they just don't have a lot of options.

But like the Boss ( 4HG) said.  figure ot how much you can spend first.  You will be out there playing on a Fantom S/X and then the church says you got to do it for a thousand or less, then that triton le just doesn't sound as good anymore.  :D

My personal preference is Roland by the way. If you primarily need a digital piano, weighted keys, with good organs, ep's, horns, and piano sounds, then the rd700 s/x is the way to go.

i encourage anyone who is ever thinking about playing piano, to  buy a board with weighted keys ( if you can't  afford or place a real piano in your music room).

Jlewis

You right about that. They both are just good "all around" keyboards. You can't go wrong with one or the other. It's all in your "personal" preference as to which one you choose!!!!

I just ordered my very FIRST keyboard. I got the MO8 and it comes tomorrow!!

So my setup would be Roland RD700Sx on the bottom and MO8 on top.

RD700sx has some awesome piano sounds and so does the MO (the weird thing is I never played it before and tried it out for only a min and was convinced to get it). I really got it cause of the bass sounds (I only tried 1 patch and was blown away LOL!) and brass patches....(which I haven't tried yet but T_keys did a song I believe using brass sounds from the MO.)

I used to want a MO8. But once I found out about the polyphony (which isnt bad for on board sequencing) along with being 2 sound banks short (about 500 songs) of the ES model....I changed my mind!

But congradulations doc....I know it's got to be a good feeling, having a new toy to play wit!

It was smooth groove but now I listened to it again it don't sound like brass (near the end where you did like a circle of 4ths move....something like Twinkie Clark did some CDs back) but I like that sound you used on it.

Whoooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaa you have a sick set up right there. Man Roland pianos and Motif sounds, very cool.

Now you have two 88 keys. How does that feel when playing them both? Since both have weighted keys.

I have no idea cause the Mo8 haven't come in yet. I should get it probably Monday and Tuesday. What I may do is midi my MO to my Radium49 and put that on the top and put the MO on the side for the bass and synths...and if I need the piano I just use the MO itself.

You be surprised what I play with on major services.  I had 3 boards for convocation last year LOL. One on top, bottom and on the side...the one on the side was just for drum tracks.  The conference this year is at my church and I have 4 boards running this year...I don't play! :)

i agree -- we didn't have $1000 to spend on a Motif, which is what I really wanted.  So instead we got the Kurzweil SP88 which has decent piano sounds and can convert into a pretty good controller.

Well, The sounds are great basses are pumping. I just got it so I'm still learning. Man the brass sounds are tight. One of the things I love about is that I can tweak the sounds very quickly. However, I like to layer and split my sounds; this board will only let you do one or the other. But other than that it's good. Will talk more about it later.
Question (off topic)
Can I use a MIDI controller to split and layer?
really don't know what that is, just have always used more than one board.
