Title: Backline Gear
Post by: cardfandan on September 22, 2006, 06:51:11 AM
What backline gear (bass head, cabinet, any processing) do you use? I'm getting ready to upgrade my system and I'm looking to hear some suggestions from you guys. I want something loud with a tiny bit of grit to it...

Right now I'm looking at starting with this:

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Ampeg-B1RE-Bass-Head-and-B410HE-4x10-Half-Stack?sku=481728

and maybe upgrading later by adding this:

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Ampeg-SVT18-Cabinet?sku=481840

What do you guys/gals think?

I've tried both and didn't like them.  the 4x10 cab didn't have any bottom to me.  I don't know how much buttom you want, but I wasn't pleased at all.  The head I don't think will give you much of the ventage svt sound that ampeg is known for.  I once was a big fan of ampeg, but I've move to David Eden cabs and amps.  I was going to purchase the SVT-3 Pro with the 410-HLF cab but I'm going to go with either the Eden WT-800B or WT-550 with the 210XST and 210XLT cabs.  My current setup is 1x15 and 2x10 Peavey cabs with the Max 450 head, it looks like I would be downgradeing, but actually that's what I'm going to do but gaining more power and clarity with it.  Don't let the 210 eden cabs fool you, those cabs can compete and out shine majority of any 410 cabs on the market right now.  I'm not sure how much your budget is, but I would look into some more equipment before buying.  Also, try playing the cab first so that you can hear how it will sound.  Also, check out http://www.eden-electronics.com/forum/default.asp for ideas and suggestions on eden gear.  That's where I've been doing my research.

i love mine.

2x10 and a 1x15 with the backline 600 heard (see my avatar).

I started with just the 2x10 and added the 1x15 a lilttle bit later.

I returned my "Backline" combo to GC. No bottom end.

Right now I own 2 combo's... A nice Trace Elliott Commando that I keep at the church and a small Ibanez combo with CD inputs that I use at home. If I needed to get a stack I might start with a Trace Elliott head first. It would have to be used since any new ones are Gibsons rebranded.

I would really try to get some MesaBoogie though. I really like them.

Here's my backline history:

VOX 100 (borrowed) >> Marshall Bass-State 250w + 1x15 cab (yuck!) >> Peavey Mk2 400 + Black Widow 1x15 cab >> Trace Elliott AH500 + 2x10 cab >> Hartke Transient 3500 + Transporter 4x10 cab >> Hartke Transient 7000 + 2 4x10XL  cabs >> Warwick 2 Quad VI + 4 Pro 4x11 cabs

My favorite rig(s) was the Hartke.  You can get so many different tones out of those amps and very clean and punchy,  but the cooling fans in the amps are quite noisey...they drove me insane when I used them in the studio.  The aluminium drivers in the cabs look really cool, especially from the stage!  Not the loudest amps in the world, but great value for money.

I have had a handful of combos to practice at home with, but the one I have now is a Warwick CCL.  Best practice combo I have ever bought...even has wheels and a retractable handle to pull it along...like what you get on suitcases!

I am too looking to change my backline.  The main contenders for me at the moment are EBS, David Eden, Euphonic Audio, Glockenlang or Genz Benz.  I like them all for different reasons, but the EBS is ahead by a nose at the moment.  It does help that I am friendly with the UK distributor  ;).  Whatever I will choose next for my backline will be a much conservative affair compared to my monstrous Warwick rig.  I will probably use a 300-400w RMS head with a powerful 2x10 cab...that's all I need these days.

Ampegs are cool.  They definitely hold a lot of grunt and power and if that's what you are looking for then I would go for it.  The SVT Pro4 amps are my favorite and I have recorded with my friends SVT Pro4 amp in his studio on a couple of occasions and you can really punish it.  However, I do think that Ampegs are over priced, weight is ridiculous and the power amps overheat very easily, so if you buy one be kind with the time that you use it and don't put anything combustible near it!  You could fry an egg on the chassis after 2hrs!  Despite that, they are reliable as a German Panzer tank!  They are popular with touring musicians because they can take quite a hefty knock and keep on smiling, so they are very good work horses.  SWR, Aguilar, Hughes & Kettner, Gallien Krueger and Mesa are good alternatives if you want an aggressive tone.

i never liked the sound of the backline combo, but the stacks sound good.

I have the B2RE and a 4X10 cab and they have been holding me down for 6 years. I'll put mine up against anything(and I have). Great tone, bottom end, and reliabilty.

Nice rig! You can't go wrong with GK! I think you're talking about the bi-amp feature.

I'm loving my backline...I just picked up 1x15 with the 250 head. Now mind you I have nothing to compare it to, so I dont know if its good or bad. But its great for me being that I only was using a practice type amp combo before and I'm still crawling (bass wise 1 year and some change)

I think what the original poster meant was what rigs do we all have and not nessessarily the GK Backline series of amps & cabs! LOL! 'Backline' is a term used by touring musicians. High profile artists don't usually bring their own amps and such and have a requst list of what gear should be rented or provided by the venue.

I was wondering why he never mention Backline (GK) gear in his post.
