Title: Nervous...
Post by: B_XALTED on September 28, 2006, 10:12:44 AM
Hey fellow drummers...

I am preparing to play for a revival at a church that has an 8000 member congregation. My church was asked to bring our choir and praise team.... And I am NERVOUS. I have never played for a group that large before, and I have never played for a pastor of the magnitude of this one.  :o

I would like to know from these big timers here, how did you handle your first 'big-time' gig or event? What pointers could you give me? I am always nervous and scared and stuff, but The Lord pulls me through, cause I pray constantly...  :D

This church heard a lot about my pastor, and how wonderful of a preacher he was, and would you believe in the same sentance, they said 'And who is this young lady drummer I keep hearing about?' Come on yall, help a sistah out, I want to represent and leave my mark, I dont just wanna be a pretty face on the kit, I feel that this is a wonderful opportunity.... Although I am excited, I am going nuts thinking about all the songs i have to learn in less than a month!!! Pray for me ya'll....

Thanks in advance  :-*

My friend, " GOD has not given us the spirit of fear, but that of love, power and a sound mind." My motto is and will always be "BEFOFE YOU PLAY BEGIN TO PRAY". The enemy tries to attack with the spirit of fear and intimidation often but I remember that it's not about me. It's about kingdom building I ask GOD to decrease the self in me and increase his anointing, spirit of power and that the audience will have a receptive ear to GOD's power that is being exemplified through the gift of music HE has given to me. I interceed on your behalf that GOD will use you in a mighty way and that the anointing will saturate you on the drums tonite. Folks will see and hear a difference and ask what is it about your playing. I pray the the opportunity for ministry to someone will be presented and that you will speak a positive word in their lives. You have been fearfully and wonderfully made in the image of GOD so walk in HIS presence with authority. Know that you are more than a conquer and no weapon formed against you shall prosper. 8000 folks in one atmosphere is just the tip of the iceberg of what HEAVEN is going to be. hit us back up and let us know the Holy Ghost showed up in that place.

Peace--
Spider

As Spider said God did not give you the spirit of.... nor is He the author of confusion.

No weapon formed against you shall prosper. You are made in the image of God (... He Made them both male and female and they are called Adam) and you lead done the path od righteousness for His namesake (namesake, Christ = Christian(s)). Know who and whoms you are... God made man just a little bit lower than the Angels... be not deceived by the enemy's suggestions of weakness, fear, nor ego. Be strong in His might. The Holy Spirit stands over God's word to perform it. Speak His word immediatley into your environment and the atmoshere as Jesus Christ did when he entered the baracaded room, "Peace...." The Holy Spirit brings knowledge of all things... clear your mind and he will tell you what to play. Our thoughts are not like His so don't play from your thoughts. Let tHis mind be in you that was also in Christ Jesus. See accessing Effortless Mastery is all about walking in the dominin that God gave man that was re-instituted by the reception of Christ Jesus. To them that recieve Him He gave power to be the Sons of God (remember He mad them both male and female and called them Adam so that includes you woman).

Can yall feel that?

First of all, Congrats, because it is a wonderful experience to get a chance to minister to that many people....I really don't think you will have a problem at all...being nervous is common and I wouldn't say it's that same as fear though...I can see if you were going to minister to 8000 and they asked you to do something you are not use to doing, but I know playing the drums is normal and is a comfort zone for you...You will most likely be nervous until you get into your place of comfort which is praying and then actually getting on the kit...From my experience it's seems like all the worries and nervousness goes away once you get to the place where you are comfortable, calm, and confident, and if playing the drums does that for you then you will be fine...Just stay prayed up so that people will not only see your talent, but the power of God in your ministry too.

God Bless

...look in the crowd and pretend that they're all chickens.  ;D ;D ;D

...sorry.  It's going to be cool after that first song.  That's the Ice Breaker.  Just pace yourself and be easy.  It's okay to feel nervous but not scared as stated previously.  There is a difference.  It's funny but usually on the first song when I'm really nervous or just cold even after warming up, I'll drop a stick.  After that, it's straight money in the bank. ;D ;)

Are you trying to scare the poor girl to death?  lol.

B , the best cure for nervousness is being prepared.  If you practice those songs till you know them like the back of your hand, you'll be able to get on tha set with confidence, knowing that you're as prepared as you can be.   :)

Hey bud,  nervous and scared is a natural normal thing and we all had to and still deal with it! You are da bomb! Keep that in your head and don't start to doubt your skill and talent! If you mess up keep going and move on don't harp on it, it will affect the rest of your gig. It really is a spiritual thing but an experience thing, the more you do these kinds of gigs the less you think about it!

Being nervous and being fearful have nothing to do with each other. Nervous energy, if channel in a positive manor can work to the Glory of God. Go in there and KNOW that you were called because they believe in your gift. Don't play for the crowd, play for the Lord.

It's a skill that not may people have.  To be able to play and sing at the same time.

And if they DO play and sing at the same time, their playing suffers.

The best at it in the Gospel arena?  Smokie Norful, followed CLOSELY by Twinkie Clark.  Is it slow or uptempo?

You'll do fine,  I remember earlier this year when my Church went to Bishop Victor Currys Church in Miami Florida, it wasnt 9000, more like 5,000 folks, it was great b/c I just played what I knew, nothing fancy, I think drummers mess up by trying to overdue things, rather than just making the music feel good

Good luck@ B-Exalted!!  Personally, I love seeing females drum...mainly cuz I don't see it that ofter...most of the time it's on TV.  Be sure to let us know how it goes.  Will someone be taping it?  If so, would it be possible for you to post it?

I was dealing with trying to be perfect all the time and it was weighing me down and I would get very nervous before playin and my congregation has like 1000 members.  But God whispered so gently " When you pray and stumble in your words, does it make your prayer null and void? So when you worship ME on the drums and make a mistake it does not null in void your worship! I try to not worry about the things of the world and the opinion of man.  But also, The Lord wants us to play with excellence and Worship HIM in spirit and Truth!! The key is the perspective.  LORD STAMP ETERNITY ON OUR EYES!!! LET US SEE EVERYTHING WITH ETERNITY IN MIND!! that is my prayer for all of us.

Sometimes I think being a female drummer is added pressure.  The drums is such a "male dominated" instrument...I would feel like in addition to representing Christ...I would also have to rep the sisters.

Sometimes I think being a female drummer is added pressure.  The drums is such a "male dominated" instrument...I would feel like in addition to representing Christ...I would also have to rep the sisters.

Its added pressure if you let it be. I am no different than the guys, except for the fact that I am attracted to men, and physical things... (I am a cutie pie, I dont look like a dude at all... ) But after a church event when another church come to visit, or we visit another church, I be the first one to be like 'lets go to my house and see if we can catch a game' or 'Lets go shoot some pool man'...

Eventhough I am just like one of the guys, most drummers [male] don't see that side of me cause they make the serious and close to fatal mistake that I am just this little naive girl who dont know how to hold my sticks and probably cant hold up the tune to Blessed Assurance... I just laugh. When I come out, like I have said before, I am suited down! hair be on point, 3 and a half inch heels, and smellin like DKNY be Delicious perfume, with make up and a pretty smile. They always assume that I am the director, at one time, they thought I was the pastors wife LOL!!! But when I get on the kit I sound like a man... ROTFLOL!!! and I dont let up until God tells me to.  I am self taught and very disciplined. I am obedient and submissive, and that makes me a better musician right there. Then they wanna be all up in my face after church... 'Dang Ms Lady you smellin good, what you know about playin the drums like that??? Your man is a lucky somebody' I laugh my head off...

But to all the women drummers, don't let that be an added pressure to you. We are playing for God first of all... That should be enough for anyone male or female to get their praise on and worship our Lord.

For those coming up, let me know whats gooooooodddd... We dont have to go out to dinner, I will be more than happy to cook some greens, potato salad, a roast, some mac and cheese and whatever and we can chill at my crib, and maybe catch a game on the 55"... LOL!!!

Well thats it for now, thanks for the wonderful comments, and encouragement.

The song starts out slow then progresses into a faster song...  would say it goes from Andante to Allegro... I have it set on my metronome... Thanks Sabe... Anyway yeah, atfirst the song had no words, but we added words. Its called Praise His Name. I have practiced this song religiously for six days straight. I got it now...  We all have a solo. But this song at the very end breaks into a shout. If nothing else in the ervice is recorded, that will be, cause my mom is gonna tape it. And no I am not posting it on LGM. I am proud of my gift and how it has flourished, but I run the risk of getting my profile deleted cause one negative comment, and I will put my foot through the monitor, and it WILL come out the other side... LOL....

Have you ever had some drummers just straight up dislike you because you're a drummer?

Also, I'm teaching my sister how to play.  Any advice I should give her as a female drummer coming up?

Well I gladly accept compliments of all types...  ::)

Your sister.... that is awesome. I started out with rudiments until I knew them forward and backwards... and learning fundamentals. Then I got into the stickin part of it. But taking it slow is how I learned... It helps me stay focussed. And also master the Mr. T face... the bruvas gets mad scared and back off.

And people hating me cause I ama drummer. Heck yeah. There are two of us that drum at my church, and the young man, his mother is a choir director, and she HATES me. she wants her son to shine so bad, but it is because of me that her son has his first pair of sticks in the first place. And it is cause ofme that he is where he is. I spent endless hours teaching him, and his mother HATES me soooo much. But, I DONT CARE... I came to lift up the name of Jesus, thats what Im gonna do...

Here is my 2 cents!!!

1. Pray
2. Pray
3. Pray some more
4. Then Get on those drums and just play..... Be comfortable. Imagine its just you and the drums. Dont try anything new especially if your nervous, it wont work. come out that pocket if you get that feeling.... like a burst of CONTROLLED energy and tear it up. If you dont get that fire, jus play comfortable. Its better to play decent and within your limits than do something new and unfamiliar, mess up and dwell on it over and over again like a bad dream.....
5. Pray again and thank god for the opportunity

There it is....

GOD will use what he chooses to get his Glory. remember you are playing for him. Just play like you do all the time...don't try to bite off more than you can chew just Golify him in your playing and he will lift your head....I do pray that you do well...but not for man I pray that GOD gets his glory....from your playing then the people will be blessed

I feel ya on the nervous issue. I had a gig this past week at one of the mega church's in Houston and when I first got in there I was nervous and a little intimidated cuz their drummer was lookin at me the whole time he was playin. My advice is to say a prayer before you start playin and just let the lord to move inside of you and to take the nervousness out and see how he works through you

We're all human so nervousness will come with some things.  That's a sign of humility to me.  I have played for the National Baptist Congress Convention twice.  I was nervous, but I knew I had a job to do.  So I had to get over that real quick.  If you are confident in your craft, then just use that for motivation.  Also, this is not about all of those people, this is about praising GOD.  Just the simple fact that you were inquired about by the Pastor of that church let's you know that you are doing your thing.  I've been blessed to share the stage with people like Daryl Coley, Norman Connors, George Clinton, The Late Gerald Levert and the group Levert, Rance Allen, Beverly Crawford, etc.  I met India.Arie's drummer back in August of this year.  He knew of my work and he was actually "geeked" to meet me.  You talk about floored....  That let's me know that someone truly appreciates my talent and it helps my confidence.

Anyway, you have a great opportunity here, and it can be a multiple blessing for you.  I'm sure you will do well.  Just focus on what you have to do.  Don't worry about how many people are gonna be there.  Do your thing.  You're gonna bless and motivate somebody there with your gift as well.  Good luck and "Break a stick."

::) oh, and no flowers........ I am allergic.

This was last week BTW. Today, my church and I will be at Norfolk State. Yes I will be playing with the soft cast on.... I am only playing P&W because there are only two songs, Greatful and Days of Elijah. Both of which I proved that I could play WITH THE SOFT CAST ON MY ARM... Everything else like 'Lift Him Up' and the other fast stuff, I couldnt hang with last night because it hurt..... But the two songs I am playing have heavy cymbal action.... and thats what I plan on doing.

Christ.  I must've been more medicated than usual that day.  Twinkie is THE best at singing and playing, followed by Smokie Norful.
