I digs it man. He has a firm grasp on triplets. I enjoyed it. I really dig the "A-Ba-Qua" he did around the 3:40-50 mark.

what in the world did u just say????

what in the world did u just say????
I'm assuming that you're inquiring about the Ah-Ba-Qua.
Its an African rhytm that was taught to me by a guest clinician when I was in high school. Its a triplet permutation.
Here is is in lamons terms:
This is the breakdown over a bar of four.
1-la-li, (2)-la-li, 3-(la)-li, 4-la-(li).
That is the basic premise of the whole joint. You can do fill ins and different permutations of it.
Give it a go. Or better yet, Check out Polyrhytms for the Drumset by Pete Magadini.

...I like the clip. Now check this out and maybe some of you guys that know him can advise him....
...he really cannot get to where he wants to be unless he starts using all 4 limbs. Do you know how "full" this could've sounded if he had used his hihat foot and added a couple of hihat splashes? Since he's with TAMA, he should definetly be looking into sitting in with Kenny Aronoff for a few months and he'll get that foot up and going. My 2 cents.

I was thinking the same thing. I you're not alone. He should hook up with Dennis if at all possible. He has outlandish 4-way and splashes his hi hats so much you'd think he was a kid in a swimming pool!

thanks

Good clip. Spank is on his way man. Thanks.

I'm honestly confused...Spanky seemed to have eveything under control in this clip...What exactly are you talking about, and what is a hi hat splash?
-
Thanks.

I thnk he simply means that he needs to do more musically with the hi-hat using his foot and some splashy accents with his left hhand insted of hittin them insane rolls he do (NASTY)
-
not neccesarily instead of, just add them on. MY BAD!

...alright man. What I mean is that "Spanky" could've added quarter notes and eighth notes using his hihat foot and added a couple of hihat splashes.
...A hihat splash is obtained by using the heel toe technique with your hihat foot on the hihat stand pedal. So let's count 8th notes.
1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and.
...step on the pedal using the balls of your foot for each quarter note. Count: 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 Next, use your heel on the up beat or the "and" while still doing the quarter notes with the balls of your foot on the pedal. Your hihat should close and open and close and open. Dennis Chambers and Steve Smith use this a lot.
....I hope that cleared it up for you.

I'm going to send Spanky a rudiment book for Christmas.

I watched the clip...rewound it a couple of times, and now I'm thinking about the statement, "If he wants to get somewhere..." My first reaction was..."He's already somewhere."
He is now in a position to influence all of us with what he is doing and I respect his ability.
Does he have more to learn? Sure. It don't stop. But respect that session, believe alot of us can glean from it, and think he has more that he didn't show.
He might even have that heel-toe hi-hat action and just kept it in the bag.
