Title: Favourite Bass Amps
Post by: LO_RIDER on October 13, 2006, 12:49:45 PM
I am curious to know what amps are you all playing?  I am a G-K man.  I bought my 400RB used, I've had it for 8 years and all I have ever had to do to it replace my Master Volume knob.

Hartke 5500, Hartke 3000 & Yamaha BBT500H. Now, are they my favorites? Hmmm............I would say no but they were bought mostly due to price and affordability at the time. My desire is to have an amp that will give me 700w-1000w into a 4ohm load. One that stays cool and is reliable. I don't mind fan noise as long as it is reasonable. I prefer a Class D lightweight model as well.

That being said, I've had no reliablilty issues thus far with any amp I've ever owned! I take very good care of all my gear! I've not had lack of volume nor have I ever had any clipping issues!

In fact, the Hartke 5500 and my Avatar 1x12 & 2x10 cabs are in my picture to the left.

Im guessing you trying to get those stadium gigs. lol Our old bass player had an amp like that. I want to say it was mesa boogie. He had both a 2X10 and 1x15 Peavey cabinet. I want to say they went down to 2 ohms. He later bought another preamp and 1000w amp and a 15 what look like a PA speaker that push 700w. If he turned his bass up he could crumble the walls and ruin any chance of anyone inside the building from hearing again.

No, seriously what size venues do you play?  I currently play in a 1,200 seat Sanctuary with my 400 RB and SWR Goliath III but we're also using the AVIOM system which I absolutely recommend to any medium to large size church.

My favorite so far are Eden cabs and amps.  I don't own one as of yet, but I've played them and I'm hoping to get my new Eden rig by the first of the year.  I'm going to get the WT-800 head and a D410XLT cab.  but when I decide to fill stadiums, all I'm going to do is get another D410XLT and a seperate power amp and I'm off to the races.  I'll use the preamp from the WT-800 and power the cabs with a power amp, don't know what kind yet but one that will have enough power to power the cabs.

I play venues of all sizes. It's the headroom I desire! My Avatar cabs can handle a ton of wattage although I can't say I'm underpowering them! Basically, I just want good, clean power available with plenty of headroom!

I own an Ibanez combo and a Behringer combo that can play an elementary school gymnasium.

My fav.? no not at all.

I will only speak of what I have played. I want a Gk Backline 600 head (that's my fav.) which I will own. The tone that I've heard was perfect for my taste.

I'd like to put that in a rack and also put a power amp in and us the head's pre-amp when I need more power.

When I first started playing many years ago the first amps that made me happy were the Sunn tube amps (200s, Sorado, etc) with twin 15 cabs.  Then I quit for awhile and when I came back the Ampeg SVT CL did the trick.  However, now, ddwilkins is right, the bet all around rig for just about any situation is an Eden Wt800 and D410XLT cab.  Their Navigator preamp with one of their power amps will also do the job quite nicely, but for the sake of simplicity the 800/410XLT just can't be beat.  I like their stuff so much that I sold my SWR and Ampeg stuff and became an endorser.

I am currently using Warwick Quad VI amps (discontinued), but I will be switching soon.  My ears have been open to Eden, EBS and Glockenlang recently.  I love all those amps and I am having a hard time making up my mind!

Obviously I'm an Eden fan, but I heard a guy up in Chicago with an EBS 1x12 and an EA 2X10 with a couple of smaller speakers running through a Walter Woods amp that sounded pretty good.

As to the AVIOM sysytem mentioned way above, if it's like the one we have, I hate it.  Give me a wedge or two anytime over those goofy in ears.  Although, to be fair, I suspect that a better test of the Aviom would be to use it by using DI's and the in ears for a completely PA driven sound.  I've seen systems like that where they basically reproduce the same sound no matter where they are. In one case they had the electronic drums and had the system running so low that I could hear the guy slapping the pads on the drum set.

In our system, everyone is running an amp except for the keyboards and so stage volume is pretty gruesome to be trying to use in ears.
