...man, everybody wants a 7x13. :-\

...seriously, this depends on "your sound" and what the music you're playing calls for.  All you are going to get here are a bunch of different opinions with like 20 people telling you to buy the "Pork Pie lil' squealer" which is the #1 "Gospel Drummers" snare. ;D

...I personally would throw in a nice brass or copper in the mix.  "Yamaha" ;)

Ya, go with something outside the box. A Yamaha Copper Nouveau, 14x6.5, A Pearl Copper Free Floater. I am not 100% sure, but I believe Pearl Reference Steel Snares are out, that would be an awesome choice. A good wood choice which is not for everyone, is Pearls Master Mahogany. I own it. Its awesome. but like I said, not for everyone. Good luck on your search.

God bless.

I just got the DDRUM 13x7 Dominion special edition (they come in purple and teal) all maple for $150.  I know you've budgeted for more, but it's a decent snare IMO.

The lugs are specially made from solid brass, polished and lacquered. Like vintage lugs they don't have swivel nut inserts so you have to be careful lining up the rims. I didn't have any problems though – the drums are obviously made to a high degree of accuracy. The lugs are attached to the shells by hefty socket button bolts which further increase the transfer of resonance from head to shell.

The result is the drums are very lively. They have good depth and attack, characteristic of birch. The 13x5 snare drum was a beauty. With its thick shell and massive brass lugs it's surprisingly heavy and fitted with Aquarian heads and brass Pure-Sound snare wires the sound really sparkled. As crisp and responsive, right across the head, as the most expensive drums I've tried.

Closing Thought: Making drums is a tough occupation

I recommend the Yamaha "musashi" 12x6 with 7 ply oak!

Just an idea I got a Pearl " firecracker " as a side snare. It sounds great

Aye, which firecracker you got? Steel or poplar? I'm rocking that steel. I love it.

i already have a lil squealer...the "12 version...u know the "13x6.5(or 7) is also clld lil squealer...but anyway the problem w/ the snare is that its too small...when i'm playing i feel like i'm aiming instead of just playing...i know i'm not dropping below "13in diameter
