Wassup Levites,
God has bless my chruch, Spirit of Excellence Ministries and it's music ministry with unfamiliar favor. Recently, some anonymous sower blessed the church with a offering of $25,000 towards our new sanctuary (PRAISE BREAK!!!!!). Then another sower gave $5,000 towards the music ministry to purchase new instruments for the new church. As minister of music, my instrument is mainly the keyboard and organ. I need you alls help because I don't know much about drums. I am wondering what type or set of drums, heads for the toms, and cymbals would you all buy? Also, tell me how much will you spend on a new set of drums? You can check out our new facility at www.soeministries.org. Thanks for your help. Be bless.

...Hey, God bless.
It all depends on your budget. If you have $5,000 to spend on the "whole music ministry" than the drums you are looking at would be an intermediate set because the rest of the money would probably go on the keys and organ with cables etc. I would plan to spend about $1,600 total on a good set with hardware and a cymbal pack or get some used cymbals from the music store.
...the drums would probably be a PDP (Pacific Drums and Percussion) FS Birch or CX Maple. Ddrum Company is reasonable on prices as well with their Dominion Ash Kits.
...now if you had $5,000 just for drums and cymbals, then that's a different story. ;D

Agreed. I have a PDP CX Maple and I loves em so much. I payed $640.00 for a standard fusion sizes (10" 12",14" toms, 18" x 22" ,6" x 14" snare. I added on the 8" & 16" toms. I teach at a boarding school and I just got then to purchase the Gretesh Catalina Birch for $449.00 out the door ( I got a great deal, they cost more ) and I like them too. As for cymbals there are alot of cymbals companies that are great. I can't lobby for any other cymbal company because of the contract with my cymbal company, but for $1600, you will do very well like J.Funky said. But If you have $5000 large to spend on the whole drumset, Then you can do it real BIG! I very excited for you and your music ministry God Bless.

Thank you all. Now you know I got first priority to the instruments ;D!!! Yeah, we have already purchased a Motif ES 8 and a new bass guitar and amp. Hopefully, later on we will be buying a percussion section after the drums. Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

...I see the drummer gets the left overs huh? Well if I were the MD, you all would be using CASIO Keyboards from the 80's and I would be rocking a Yamaha Birch Custom 7piece. J/K ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
...God bless you and your church man. Keep growing. 8)

For the budget you have I suggest the Gretch Catalina Maple kit or a PDP kit. Cymbals being the most important purchase get you some GOOD cymbals. As far as heads go get you some sort of 2-ply eith EVANS G2 or REMO Emporers. Get you a good bass pedal and hihiat stand Pearl Eliminator series, DW 5000 series or Tama Iron Cobra.
Just right there you are looking at about $2,000 - 2,200. But you'll have good quality stuff.

A gretsch catalina maple kit $699 with either Sabian AA $499 or Zildjian A Customs $649, either Iron Cobra, Eliminator, DW 7000,5000or 9000, or Yamaha Flying Dragon they range in price from $119 to $299 at Guitar Center.

That was a funny flash back with the Casio Keyboards from the 80's. That was hilarious. I guess the drummer will get the old school CB700 Kit.. The kit I play on now is worst than that. Poor drummers. We do have to improvise don't we.. Congrats on the new facility.

ddrum maple player....14x5 1/2 snare, 10, 12, 16, 22x20 kick
YOU WILL HAVE TO CHANGE THE HEADS! For a Church Id go Ambasador on the snare and pinstripe on the toms!
Cymbals Id go Sabian aax 10,12 splash.....16 and 18 aax Crashes.......20 hhx rock ride......13 hhx groove hats........hhx 16 ozone crash
Hardware DW 5000 pdl. and hi hats
I think this gives your Church hi end gear but at reasonable prices.

If you know what you're doing, you can get a Sunlight and tune it beautifully.
I've been tuning for 10 years and my sunlight kit sounds nice. I'm working on a new way to tune the toms though to get that sweet David Garibaldi thud.

Laugh all you want but your kit don't determine how good you are experience does. I'll put up some clips hopefully soon so you can see.
I know what I'm talking about on this one.

What do you see thats wrong with the kit in all seriousness. Anybody whats wrong with it, please tell me because nobody has even heard it yet.

Anyway I'm not trying to sturr up anything but comparred to to a lot of the sets I've seen on you tube and in other church, it's pretty nice to me. I thank God for it.
Anyway, the sunlight belongs to the church, here is the setup I'm getting in about 6 months for me.
DW Drums
Collector's Maple Drums in Natural to Cherry Fade Lacquer over Olive Ash Burl Exotic with Black Hardware
18x22 Bass (x2)
8x22 Woofer (x2)
5x13 Collector's Maple Cherry Satin Oil
7x8, 8x10, 9x12, 11x14, 13x15, 14x18 Toms
Pedals and Hardware
9000 Single Bass Drum Pedal (x2)
9500 Hi-Hat Stand
9502LB Remote Hi-Hat Stand (x2)
9300 Snare Stand
9100M Round Throne
DW Rack System
DWSM934 Cymbal Arm (x7)
DWSM906 6" Stacker (x3)
I got a good job soo I'll holla fa sho when I get these bad boys and of course I'll be using Sabian cymbals (mostly AAX).
My style oif drumming is a cross between mostly Funk but also Rock and jazz here and there. I don't play the way everybody else on here doaes (Gospel) in church mainly because I'm a very stiff person and have problems trying to do doubles on the bass. I'm mainly a drum corp kat. My style works in church though and this kit and tyhe AAX's will give me what I need to play how I play.

You're right man, to each his own. There is nothing wrong with your Sunlight kit. As long as it gets the job done... But in this thread, I believe Levite was looking for some advice on mid level kits at the least. That's a nice Sunlight you have there. :) i wasn't dissing your kit, just the fact that you would recommend it to Levite was a liittle wierd.

Ok missunderstanding, my bad. I thought he was asking what kind of drums do people have. I guess I needed to read more.
I was just presenting what I have not making a suggestion.

I feel sorry for whomever sits in that front row seat in front of the kit. It has to be a musician's seat. ;)

i love to hear compliments abbout how good my cheap (inexpensive) drums sound. other dudes eyes be poppin' out when i tell 'em how little the stuff cost me.
but i agree a hundred percent. MOST people spend a lot of money because they need all the help they can get to get a good SOUND. it's a dfifference. . .playing good, and sounding good. and with time and know-how just about any set can be recorded in the studio or used live. it doesn't matter what people say. nobody in here would know if my set was maple, birch, or mahogany if i posted some studio stuff. whoever GUESSED right would be like, "see i knew it."

Yeah only musicians used to sit there but the church has been changed around noiw.
