Does anyone know of a tool, online or elsewhere, that will:
a) if you give it the notes, it will tell you the name of the chord. like if you give it "C-E-G-C-D-E" it will give you "C9"
b) identify potential scales. like if you give it "C-D-E-G-A" it will come back with "C Major" "G major" and "F major" "A minor" etc.
anyone know of something like that?

yea... www.looknohands.com

go to the piano room. it has all the scales in the world on there...this should help.
be blessed.

You can also go to www.passion4jazz.com - they have a vitual piano that will give you the chord name, etc. when you type it in.
You can also do it by a number of ways, ex: by key, notes, and so forth.

yes this is a great site...
thanks, but ...no...I'm looking for something that will work in the reverse of this very excellent website. This website will give you all the notes of the scale, but can't give you all the scales that a given note belongs to.

I don't think there is such a site.
