Title: "Characteristics of 'The Hood'": Do you have them?
Post by: NJTheBishopAnderson on November 08, 2006, 01:40:27 PM
A fellow LGM member and I were discussing the similarities of "The Hood" and came up with these...

1) Theres ALWAYS a Martin L King Blvd running through it.
2) The "black" High School is always Booker T or Washington Carver High
3) There is a Mt. Zion or Bethlehem Baptist somewhere around and...
4) A neighborhood store thats ran outta somebody's house where you can get cookies, candy, small bag of chips, or a small frozen cup a Kool-Aid in the summer!!! Mmmm Mmmm

I know y'all had them, so give in and reveal your "hood" truths here!!

Now THIS is a trip!!! ;D

Down south there is always a neighborhood "Ju-lip lady" (summa yall know what Ju-lips are!!), and many times beside ju-lips she sells pickes, hot sausages, pickled eggs,  pickled pig's feet, Tom's potato chips, and Ne-Hi sodas (yall remember Nehi Strawberry, grape and peach sodas!!).

And don't forget about Mt. Carmel Primitive Baptist or New Jerusalem Baptist or Faith Temple COGIC. Also don't forget about Thurgood Marshall Community Center, and ABC Liquor Store!! :D ;D

Oh yeah and there's always a man on the side of the road with a huge BBQ grill selling BBQ Chicken and ribs, and someone on Friday Nights selling Fish Sammiches!! ;D LOL Thats the hood!

People hang out in the grass area next to the neighborhood store, drinking, smoking, and whatever other mischeif they can get themselves in.

There is always at least one shed tree mechanic on each block. In other words the garage, shed, or big tree at his house is the garage of his business. (He doesn't call you to tell you your car is ready because he need to use it to bring his wife to the grocery store first)

You can find someone to braid your hair just by riding up and down the street. The "beauticians" work on the porch steps.

Sidewalks are not for walking---that's what the street is for---so drive slow.

You won't be able to drive fast anyway, because Pookie n dem got a "new" 1988 Buick and they are leaning back cruisin'.

You will always see someone walking down the street holding a plate of food & eating. Why wait 'til you get home.

You right about that SisterT!! People be walking down the street eating, especially CHICKEN WINGS!!

Also in the hood you can't drive down the street without everybody breaking their necks tryna look in your car and see who you is!! And don't be in the car with one of us who grew up in the hood. By the time you get where you going you hoarse because every 2 seconds you yelling out the car at somebody you know (YO POOKIEEEEE!!! KEISHAAAAA!! WHAT UP RAY RAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!).

Also, every time you ride down MLK Blvd it takes forever to get where you are going because you are behind that car that is stopped in the midde of the road blocking traffic 'cause they talking to somebody or they "doing some bidness" (if ya know what I mean). LOL

You will also find BEAUTIFUL church edifices with bars on their windows because they are right in the middle of the ghetto!!!

Ahhhhh the beauty of the "hood"!  :D ;D

You know you live in the hood if your street sign is layin' on the ground....next to the pole, and it's been there for months.

You know you live in the hood if your back yard is nothing but dirt... cause it used to be the neighborhood basketball court.

You know you live in the hood if there's a snack shop that only opens in the summertime, and only sell snow cones, and has a new owner every year.

Or was that just my neighborhood?

You know you live in the hood if the ice cream truck man just got arrested for seeling more than just ice cream.....

You know you in the hood if every time you see a white person driving through, you KNOW what they ain't on they're way home!

Also if you see a white guy driving through the hood, and the next minute there is a large SWARM of young black men surrounding the car! (Sorry but that aint no joke. I see it all the time).

Well, we had "Mrs. Maggie" and she didn't run outta NOTHING!!!! She had enough stuff to put the real corner store out of business, and the crazy part is NOBODY snitched on her.

Oh yeah, in the "hood" a football game wasn't a good football game unless it ended in a fight.  Thats why you have to leave early. lol

Yall know tha deal.

In Brooklyn there's a bodega on every other block, and every one of 'em has either a Ahmed or a Jose (depending on if it's run by Arabs or Latinos)

We got those $2.00 Hamburgers in the plastic baggies.  Beef Patties wit cheese.  And about 20 different Little Debbie Products.

Every morning before they go to school, the kids will come in and by about $5.00 worth of candy, and it takes forever because all the candies are 5, 10, or 15 cents.   :D

"Let me get 10 Swedish Fish, 4 blow pops, 7 Gummi Worms, and a Pack 'o' Red Sour Power.   :D

And don't forget tha 50 cent Sodas.  I brought one to work one day and my boss was like "What's this?   ?/? "

I guess they don't sell those in the nice neighborhoods!   ::)

Then there's the Chinese Restaurant with the bulletproof glass up to make sure they don't get jacked for their Roast Pork Lo Mein.  lol.

What about the First Baptist church for each subdivision of the hoods (First Baptist East End, First Baptist Southside)

Kids in the hood knew that if the street light came on and you weren't in the house, that you were catching a beatdown

The liquor stores are always positioned across the street from the church. (with the saints supporting them on Sunday)

Forget poker tournaments....but let a rousing game of marbles come up and everyone was there!

Ahhh....the 'hood'

You know you are in the hood when you see people sitting in a Lazy-Boy recliner and other "indoor" furniture peices on the front yard that has no grass. --- And the furniture stays outdoors.

You know you are in the hood for CHIRSTMAS when you see empty milk jug containers covering Christmas lights for decoration --is this just a New Orleans hood thing.

You know you are in the hood when you see 4 cars parked in front of the house and none of them work!

You know you are in the hood when you see the owners brand new Mercedes parked in front of his house in need of an "extreme makeover."

You know you are in the hood when you see 5 year old Moshekia, 4 year old Breanna, and 6 year old Jasmine dancing in the drive way doing a very convincing replica of the "Beyonce Booty Dance."

You know you are in the hood 'cause 6 year old little DeAndre has a diamond earring in each each ear, wearing a gucci outfit from head to toe, got a grill going across his teeth, and his momma his yelling for him to come on so they can go get their welfare check cashed.

Well, in my hood...

We always had a neighborhood thug with 'lil in his name (lil buddah, lil jo-jo, lil quayshawn...)

In the summer time, our relief from the heat was poppin the fire hydrant..

We would play hide and go seek.. you know...' Inky pinky ponky, daddy bought a donky, the donky died, daddy cried...'

for my friends in deep east oakland, sideshows was it... Lil Ant be in that 5.0 with the gold rims, and like ten 15" subs in the trunk and you can hear the liscence plate rattle more than anyting else.

I could always hear the ice cream truck, but never heard my mom when she would call me

i could go on.... i'm gonna hit yall with my east coast ghetto story in a sec...

remember when you couldnt afford to buy the hopscotch game so you took a rock or some chalk and drew it yourself on the concrete sidewalk? Or what about when you were missing pieces to your checkers game and you used soda bottle tops to make up for the missing pieces. KING ME! but your two drink tops wouldn't stand up right on each other.

I lived in East Oakland (California) until I was 11 years old.  I  recognize the "corner store" phenomena and, quite frankly, never knew that there was a hopscotch game.  Until today, I thought that everyone drew hopscotch on the concrete.  Does anybody remember the one scary old man or old lady in the neighborhood that everyone avoided because they'd heard bad stories about the person's past?  In my day, it was "Old Man Pete."  When you starting getting near his house, you crossed the street.  Rumor had it that he'd killed his wife and then buried her in the backyard.  He was always outside tending those flowers.  Hahaha!  ;D ;D ;D  Does anyone remember "double-dutch" jump rope, though?  What about all the promised fights that finally came to fruition "on the last day of school?"  (I was standing behind a girl who was getting the "beat-down" of her life when she ducked and I got punched in the nose.  It broke a couple of blood vessels in my nostrils, and my nose bled for the entire summer...  :'().  Ahhh, yes, nothing like growing up in the ghet-- I mean, the 'hood.   ;D ;D ;D  God bless.

The barber shop hours (if posted like this)

Open:  Whatever time is on the door is the same time the first barber sets his alarm to get up.

Close:  If it says 6PM, that really means 'It'll be 6PM unless it starts to get slow anytime after noon'

This was funny right here, but I do remember them fights.  When I was younger, there was a fight at the bus stop down from my house, and the whole neighborhood showed up to see it.  Them guys was fighting for real w/blood everywhere, then people started jumping in and it turned into an all-out brawl.  Oh, the good ole days of school.

How about these:

1. There is always that one fine girl that every brother in the hood tryna holla at.

2. Helicopters was always flying in the air cuz they was looking for somebody

3. When there was a house party, everybody in the hood came, whether they was invited or not

4. A fight always breaks out at the above mentioned party

5. Football (or any other sport) was played in the road, no pads, if u fell and got hurt that's on u

6. Everybody know who the drug dealers are

True. Back in the day, I remember the football team lost majority of their games but the stadium was packed. The band sounded as if they were a college band and the uniforms were neat too. Me and the family might miss the first quarter but was prompt for halftime. Then leave in the middle of third quarter.
