As my other Memphis homies said. If you think Stanley has the heat you should hear Clifford "PeeWee" Jackson and James Sexton... both can read music and blaze in whatever style. Clifford "PeeWee" Jackson and theJD Jonathon Davis faced each in the GC DrumOff Regionals about For years ago in Atlanta. Clifford went on to the Finals in Hollywood that year (though he did not win the national competition). Cliifford and James both studied at the University of Memphis. I am not sure about Stanley.

I know Billy personally and I know he can play BUT does this show that hes a talented musician, ...NO! Just because you can out shred does not mean you are a good drummer! Listen to Billy live with a band or on a recording and that will show you that hes very talented and musical! You want me to check your boi then send his backing someone in a concert!

Not one of these dudes bruh. Anoother cat named Pee Wee man. And I dnt know what they do in the drum offs because I've never entered one. So I guess he did his research on the judges sheets?? And besides Pee Wee is WAY better than these two guys put together,(not aking anything away from these two musicians cause Stanely is my boy and Billy is a "co-endorsee" to some of us on the board here)......And wats so bad about getting second place in the drum off even though they dnt give it? You make it sound like its just impossible to place against you.

I'll agree with you.  I've seen Billy live in a musical setting and he totally fit the music.  I'm not bagging on him at all.  Billy is definitely a very gifted and musical drummer.

He was on tour with Angie Stone in South Africa, and he plays with the r+b singer Glenn.....???....Jones. I think that's his name. But I know that he deffinently plays with him because I saw his name, along with other NuJynisis band members on the band members list of his myspace page.

sounds like something that people who CANT shed say!   ;D  Im not tryin to start nothin but you dont need to defend billy cause we all know he can play fluently in a shed or in a band and he can solo. period. secondly, a good drummer is in the OPINION of the listener and what the listener prefers to hear.  thirdly, check stanley's myspace to see that he CAN play in a band.  They are both advanced musicians.

i dont understand your comment to this thread cause its about shedding.  not giging.  so let me get this straight, your opinion of a good drummer is one who can play soundly with a band?  what about without a band?  soloing or in a shed?  reading or charting?  teaching or instructing?  arent these things a part of being a well rounded and talented musician?

(just my thoughts)

ps. what does "you knowing him personally" have to do with anything?  (just wondering)

I know we not tryin to start nuthin but............that was deep and true. And as we all know.....STANLEY CAN DEFFINENTLY PLAY WITH A BAND! We all heard him play with his band some time ago, and they have an arrangement of Lord I Lift Your Name on High on the radio station down here in Memphis. He did a clinic too! Check it.........

You do know, "I'm not trying to start nothing" was negated when you said, "what does "you knowing him personally" have to do with anything?  (just wondering)" ?

Secondly, that's not a shed. That's a jam session. You dude's get together, trade licks to the point of nauseum, and feel like a champ when you walk out the door. What did you just accomplish? How did you get better? If you want to get together and jam, that's cool. However, call it what it is. You wouldn't play that way, anywhere else, other than with your friends.

For you people who insist on showing what you got - puttin' all of your chops on display, and emptying our your bag of fills, is way over-done. Some of us prefer to feel what you have to say, musically. I would hope that all of these jam sessions are teaching you discipline, and how to apply this stuff in musical setting. But, let's get for real. Too many younger cat's are way too anxious to show off the new lick they've learned. That's why they flock to these jam sessions...

As for "that's what people who can't shed say":

Dude, BBD is an older cat .... and I'm not as old as him, but my early twenties are becoming a distant memory. I wish you could open up your mind enough to see that SOME OF US AREN'T INTO THAT ANYMORE. At one point, I was just as fascinated by learning new fills as you guys are today. Being able to 'shed', as you all call it, means absolutely nothing next to being a great musical instrumentalist. SOME of, at this stage, find fulfillment in playing music. You guys have to flock to these events, 'cause you don't find fulfillment in 'simply' playing music right now. To you, playing in a musical setting is too restricting. You need to get with your boys and let it all hang out. Hell, I been there. So, I understand. I'm just trying to get you to see that, after awhile, that ish get's old, and you start to mature and focus on making GREAT music. Like I said, at the end of the day, that's what it's all about...... making music.

Nobody wants to post clips of them grooving with a group of their friends. Why? That's boring to so many of you dudes. They're like little kids with all of this energy. Most of the older musicians are like adults tellin' these young kids to settle down. However, it's against their natures, at that point in their lives.

But, whatever..... you'll probably come back with, "that's what people who can't shed say", as if that amounts to a hill of beans. I imagine to you, being able to show off your new licks to your friends means the world.

i understand that some of you are bored with things like that for whatever reason.  we all know you and bbd are not entertained by sheds and jam sessions so why do you all keep opening up these threads and posting your comments?

(just wondering)

obviously there are lots of young and old people who still like to shed, trade licks and kill at jam sessions as well as rock a show.   (like me, billy, stanley, ron bruner, thomas pridgen, jeremy hanes, gerald hayward, eric moore...and lots of other young and old famous and not so famous drum, keyboard and bass players)

it aint for everybody, so for those of you who dont like it, stop watching the clips when they darn well tell you what it is before you open it.  just leave the threads alone. period.

i for one like the entire musical sound...I like to hear the a full band ...knowing I'm a drummer, i'll check the drummer out first, but I'll also pay attention to how the drummer locks with the base player and how the base locks in with the keys...and what fills the guitar puts in there and how that all accompanies the lead vocal or singers....

I remember aaron used to invite me to his house all the time.. i wish I had the time to...but with a wife and children, my priorities were way ahead of sheddin. And it's nothing wrong with it. I'm just to the point in my musical career that it just aint about trading licks anymore. It's about being comfortable with where you are in hopes to get better and learn something new on the way.

My wife often asked me if I were happy with where I am musically, and I would always say no, but knowing I', the Chief Priest in my home, I have a greater responsibliltiy. I can't hang out all night shedding til 2:00 in the morning cause I know I have to get to work the next day or study and get i tuned to what GOD wants me to teach, so that he can be pleased.

sheds r fun 4 me i'm always looking to learn something new, to me some of yall r making a big deal out of something so small.....it started out as here's a shed clip of billy and stan to how good is such and such with a whole band...it's a shed not an audition for some big artist or whoeva!!!!!  if they want to go at it in a shed that's between them......a friendly battle, i c nothin wrong with it, u compete in sports y not in a shed if that's what u choose to do, all in fun.... I guess I just look at things totally different from everybody else but it's cool though!!!!! ;D

Ummm...

That Jacksonville 'shed' wasn't bad. So, all shed clips aren't a bunch of noise. You click on the link hoping for the best. Contrary to popular belief ... not everyone defines a shed as five drummers playing at the same time...

I can't stand noisy shed clips. The Jacksonville shed was cool because A Fam member was killin' the Whole session.

Thats pretty much how I feel.  The Jax clips are the best that I've seen.  Its a crap shoot.  We've already had the discussion about what a shed really is and the miss-use of the word today.

"Shed" is short for "woodshed".  The woodshed is a place of practice.  Somewhere that you work on your skills and refine your technique.  Todays sheds are in all actuality jam sessions.

That's what I really don't like. What's the point if you can't even hear each other?

Secondly, what also bother's me is that so many guys substitute these jam sessions for practice. They think if they go bang for five hours with their friends, that that's the same as focused, regimented practice....

I'm not opposed to jam sessions. However, as I've said before, it has become a substitute for true practicing, for so many so-called musicians.

Jam session don't help you get better unless there is a purpose and structure to the session. If we all got together in the woodshed as LGM fam, I bet we would all learn something.

I think there was.  I'm almost certain.

So true.

whatever you call it, shed, practice, jam session, there needs to be structure.  no clashing. no playing over each other. everyone should get a chance to speak and when you speak, it needs to be clear and understood.

but i dont even know how we got to this...wait...yes i do.  but all of that is beside the point because Im getting back to the subject and uhh...this was a really good clip. clear. clean. advanced chops. structured music (big ups to Coltrane). billy and stanely are the truth. period.

Dude you dont know what you are talking about it was a shed. Well in memphis we call them vibe-outs.

Memphis is go miss you Stanley LOL!), Glenn Jones, and was on tour in South Africa with Angie Stone....NOW IF SOMEBODY TRIES TO HATE NOW, LET ME KNOW IF YOU CAN GET ON TOUR.....not a gig....A TOUR WITH ANGIE STONE!

.NOW IF SOMEBODY TRIES TO HATE NOW, LET ME KNOW IF YOU CAN GET ON TOUR.....not a gig....A TOUR WITH ANGIE STONE!

I prefer to tour with the Mahavishnu Orchestra or Meshell Ndegeocello. But, that's just me.

In any case, you don't know me, so it's impossible to distinguish between what I say, and hate, at this point.

Here's something you may not know ---- their are amazing musicians all over the world, who don't really care much for being a touring/recording musician. Some people play for the love; not because they can aquire fame, money, and women(or whatever you're into). Why did musicians play 1000 years ago? Do you think it was so they could go on tour? Hardly. That's the modern musicians way of thinking; and it's a mentality tied up into materialism and need for approval.

Music has existed since the dawn of time, and I imagine the purpose for the creation of music has very little to do with the reasons behind why most people are interested in it. Don't get me wrong, I don't see any thing wrong with touring, but I'm not going to pimp the music. This is not going to be a means or me to make an income. I'd rather get my own band together, and play small clubs .... just so that I can play true creative music with spiritual depth. Outside of that, I play ... and I practice .... because when I don't, I don't feel right within.

You want to talk about Angie Stone...

....you research John Coltrane. Our ideals are very similar.

Dude you dont know what you are talking about it was a shed. Well in memphis we call them vibe-outs.

If the shoe doesn't fit, don't try to force it on.

What I saw on that clip was no a 'shed', because so many of you don't even understand what it means to shed. You can shed with other musicians, as BEATERBOXERZ pointed out earlier; but it's not about merely  trading fours, or emptying out your back of chops. That's what you call a jam session.

What I saw on that clip was jam session, point blank. I've seen a clip of Stanley, and I think he's good. I don't think he's as amazing as some people make him out to be, but I do respect what he does. Musicality and technique, as far as I'm concerned, are but the tip of the iceberg.

Sooo, if you consider that clip to be a "vibe-out", or whatever you prefer to call it .... then, we just have a difference of opinion.

I must've forgot to put one of those smileys on there..that post was supose to be a joke. And thanks man. FINALLY 15! LOL . And Man on a Mission, I fill what you're talkin about, but at the same time I feel what everybody else is talking about. I know and I think we all know that music has existed for over 1000 years and probably even longer than that. I know people who play just for the love of music because I'm one of them. But I know I would want some and need some more experience to BECOME BETTER AT WHAT IT IS GOD HAS GIVEN ME. And I would deffinently prefer a gig with Meshell over Angie. I wouln't dare try to pimp music because that would be like pimping God in my case! For him to bring me this far at an early age in my MUSICAL abilities, for me to b able to play with the Manhattans at the age of 14, have my first endorsment at the age of 13, and two more to follow at 14, for me to do any of the things He's allowed me to do at this age and it all be in vain! I'd rather him to have not given it to me at all! Sure I like some money here and there but that's not a bad thing because if I remember correctly the Bible says something about "paying" your musician(not in the same term but something similar). I'm trying not to take that the wrong way but that one line is burnin me man!.........I'm cool tho man....I get your point. ;D
