Title: a quick three minute singing lesson for your choirs
Post by: diverse379 on December 08, 2006, 05:57:12 PM
if you are like me you warm your choirs up with some ma me may mo moos
or some la la la la la up the scale

i try to work them out on all the vowels so i will change vowels each time i modulate

but check this out

i overheard my teacher training a singer who was on american idol

and he was telling her to ride the vowels that singing is all about the vowels

and he demonstrated that if you focus on the vowels and what you want to do with that vowel riff wise or articulation wise then you will be much more able to when you sing that vowel and be sure to involve your body into it

i know it doesent read as well as it sounded when i heard him
but i was instantly able to improve my vocals with this little bit of information.

so get your choirs to sing those vowels withing the songs you teach work with your soloists on projecting and playing with the vowels

one phrase that pays

ride those vowels

I echo you on that one.  I am a vocal instructor by profession and singing vowels is one of the most important lessons that I stress to my students.  Keep that air flowing, commit to the vowels, and your sound will greatly improve.  It may be a bit airy, shakey, or inconsistent if the voice is not well conditioned, but singing vowels is one of the quickest ways to condition one's voice.

Just try to sing a consonant and see what happens...try to hold out a "p," "r," "s," etc.  When we sing we are holding out vowels.

Can't say it enough - vowels, vowels, and more vowels.  You are absolutely right!

Welcome to LGM MiracleSings!!!!

Lyric Im guessingf your joking right?

If not basically if you listen to gospel singers that do alot of runs or even if they dont. Then runs or usually done on vowel sounds. Or singing in general people more so want to hear the vowel sounds stretched out. I understand it but I didnt realize thats what it really is. I tried it after reading this and it seems its a little easier to sing by focusing on the vowel sounds.

Nah Double M, I'm dead serious.  I don't play.  I just sing & I'm trying to learn all I can since I can't find a vocal coach in my area.  Can you give me some examples of what you just said as well though.  A brotha is trying to bke more than volume & range.  ;)

Its like if you were singing the song Falling in Love with Jesus. You would sing.

Falling in loooooove with Jeeeeesuuuuuuus.

Stretch the vowel sounds. You have to be careful which vowels you stretch. It can be a long song. LOL So you can either hold out the vowel sounds or do your riffs on the vowel sounds as you hold them out. I may try to do a voice clip later.

Thanks, Mysteryman.  One of my students told me about this forum.  I came straight home from the lesson and signed up.  I love it over here.  You all are a wealth of information and I am ready to learn, and to fellowship with some like-minded musicians.  I'm off to church right now, but I'll be back over here as soon as possible.

Ok.  It's not as hard as I thought.  I've been doing that, but not knowing it.  IMO, I think it's easier for those that can play to 'freak' notes when they sing bkecause they already have an idea of what goes w/what.  Follow me?

Incorrect, sir. I've known musicians that can play very well, put couldn't sing if you put a gun to their head. No, seriously.  :D

Well, that is all my warm ups consist of. They were supposed to be posted, but I just haven't had that much time! But in summary...

I sing on the vowels...ee aa ah oh oo....and then you have you modified vowels like an a and ee combined to get a certain sound, but that is starting to get maybe too technical for choirs. Get at me if ya need any more...

I think he meant it is easier for those singers that play keys to riff and find stuff
and it is true a singer who plays keys will have more possibilities presented to him or her

that is not to say that the singer who plays keys will be betterof course that depends on the individual  but will it be generally easier to learn riffs and scales and other things yes

and on the other hand a keyboard player who sings will usually be a better accompanist because of the practice in laying back and comping

Very good, thread.  Thanks for the tips, everyone.

It always seems like the great riff-ers also play at least a little.

I'm trying to work on my voice. Right now, I'm one of those dudes that sjon talked about. My voice sounds like a rusty dog, on crack, sitting on the corner selling bootleg pork chops.

This'll definitely help me out.

I warm my choir up on Oh Lord We Praise You (Start in C and modulate to F)
I also warm my choir up on Let Us Praise and Worship Him (old John P. Kee) I start the tenors on E, altos on G and Sopranos on C. I modulate up to A flat on this one

If you don't know this one, I'll share and consider this your late Christmas present...
 ;D

Tenors have the last note, Altos have the middle note, Sopranos have the top note...

Let   Us     Praise  And   Wor-  Ship   Him
EGC  GCE   CEG    ADF   GCE    FAD  EGC

The bass line is

Let   Us         Praise  And    Wor- Ship  Him
C,     C, G,F    E        D or F  G       G    C

Repeat each one two times...

This is a very good warm up because you can do it a cappella anywhere before your choir sings at other churches/functions etc...

i dont think it will be hard to find a vocal teacher in nashville that is the music capitol of the world

country anyway but vocal control is vocal control

in sc you may have a bigger dillema

of course check your phone book
for music schools
check your colleges in your areas most bigger colleges have fine arts courses
and you can just register for them as long as you have a ged or high school diploma

you can put an advertisement out in the help wanted that you are looking for a singing teacher

or you can try one of the singing software courses online

some of them are pretty good

i bought singing coach
i like it
i got better in a week
