Title: Question!
Post by: v-mac on December 23, 2006, 04:05:33 PM
Ok firstly hi everyone I hope everyone will enjoy the holidays. Now I can sing from tenor to low soprano on a good day when I'm sing choir. But when it comes to leading its hard to do it. Is it a possibilty that I'm just not breathing right or what?

Happy holidays to you, too!  I don't know the answer to that one, it may take a minute with the holiday weekend and all, but one of our vocal professionals is sure to have some tips...

What is hard about it?
Do you have trouble singing the lead exactly like the artist, ad libbing, or are you just shy?

Hey I'm here. ;D

As far as your range, I deal with the same issue.  My range for choir can go all the way to low soprano as well, however I tend to 'lose' range when leading praise and worship.  I think it has a lot to do with 'nervousness' and not breathing correctly.  You tend to have less confidence when you stand out in the forefront, so my advice would be to work on your stage presence and your range will be there. ;)

When it comes to leading versus being in the choir, you are not blending anymore.  you can now hear everything that you are doing with and to your voicel more clearly.  Befor leading a song make sure you are well warmed up.  There is no problem with changing the key if needed.

In terms of your range, find the best way to approach your higher notes.  For most, working our way to higher notes is best but for some hitting a higher note and coming down is better.  Do not try to be like the artist.  You do what you know your voice can do comfortably.  start on a C3 and slide up an octave without breaking.  keep going up and in different keys.  As your voice slides, let it go to whatever resonant area (head, chest, falsetto, or head mixture) it needs to.  Practice that for awhile and vary the pattern trying to do it with runs.  The key is to not try to chest everything but train your voice to seem as though it is.  Anymore questions regarding this, feel free to message me.

Hi there, I'n no expert on praise & Worship (have a few years experience).  Firstly praying and seeking GOD for your songs is the most important thing.  Secondly trying to do the songs like someone else is useless, develop your own style and stick with it, listen to other leaders learn from them but do not become them.  Trying to be someone else and lead praise & worship is too much work, you're bringing people in presence of GOD so therefore you must worship to the best of your ability (get the songs in your spirit, spend your time in the presence of GOD).  Don't worry about how vocals I'm assuming you're back should fill in any gaps (they give flavour to the song), you would be leading worship if someone didn't think you could do.  Be blessed by the Lord.
