Good Afternoon Ya'll,
I just wanted to ask if anyone has ever considered getting a custom bass guitar built for them. I met a guy here in Maryland who owns about 11 basses, all of them custom built from companies I've never heard of. I was seriously considering getting a Conklin seven string(Yep, SEVEN!!!)

There are a lot of good builders out there these days.  The only thing stopping one from getting a dream bass is the amount of money you have to spend. You can get a custom bass from 1000 USD to +10,000 USD.

Playing some of those builders basses may be difficult. A lot of music stores may not carry them. If there are guitar shows that come to your town make it a point to go to them and check out the builders. Ask a lot of questions and play a lot of basses!

Before you buy a 7 string bass guitar, are you very comfortable on a 6 string?  I used to play a Fodera 6 string, but never really got comfortable on it; I had to do so much muting of open strings because there was far more potential for open strings and wayward harmonics to ring at times I didn't want them to. I'm now very comfortable on my 5 string MTD, but 6 was just too much, I cant imagine playing a 7 string, but you're probably one of those awesome players who can play anything!

Thank You RobT for those websites, actually most of them I've already been to, but a couple I hadn't. Thanx again.
I wish I could play anything!!!<smile> I picked up the bass guitar very fast though, and I read a lot of info on it, history, players etc...
 The bass guitar I play on now is a 5 stringer, but  I play my friends 6 stringer often (he plays a Carvin LB76, I think that's what it's called) The neck is very fast and seems to be more narrow than other six stringers I've played. I think I'm pretty comfortable on it, but the people I know who own 7 string basses say that it's easier to play than a six string, how I don't know, but I'm definately going to play one before I commision a luthier to make me one.

I have become enamored of the F Bass ( http://www.fbass.com). I am thinking about ordering a 6 string from them. The F basses are also sold by a dealer in the area.

:D Custom basses seem to be the way to go.  Right now I'm playing on a Dean Edge -6 and a Dean Edge 6FL (fretless), in choosing a custom bass you gotta consider the sound u want...personally I prefer Ken Smith Basses but my checkbook ain't ready for it this year.
