Title: What do you all recommend?

I want to take a few courses at this college for music performance (organ/piano).  What course would you recommend me to take?  I want to learn better technique and have depth in all I play.  Thanks!

It might help if you post some of the classes you are considering and a short description of the class from the college catalogue. Also, an advisor that understands your goals is a must. Might as well finish the music degree . . . then you can teach us'ns whatcha know good.  :lol:

pmshort, you might be disappointed. If I took music courses on the college or university level it would be to get a degree. Then I would be qualified to teach school and make some money. Higher education doesn't see gospel music as professional music. Your private teacher at a college can't teach you anything about gospel music. They will show you how to read better. What the classical reperatory is.,and technique. Some of this can be applied to gospel performance. However most of it can not help you.  You would be better off taking a course in jazz piano if it is offered. The skills required to play jazz piano.  Which is music that is generally not written down, would help you. In this course they eventually will work on key centers, modulations, and mastery of all twelve keys. That kind of information is useful to the gospel player. A music theory class with ear training might be offered. Something like that will help you. Don't throw your money away. After you have registered and paid your fees,it is hard to get your money back if you are disappointed. Remember what I said here. It might be an expensive lesson.

Indeed. Jazz is the way to go. Gospel is just Jesus-centered combination of jazz and blues anyway. ;)
