Do anyone play with picks with there bass?
-
When I first started I did play with a bass pick(Only because I didn't like the pain my fingers were feeling) After I practice and my fingers got use to the feel I've been plucking every since. Now on guitar I use a pick.

You think that's tough... try breaking your fingers in for regular playing on an upright bass. Those blisters HURT! But as soon as the fingers have recovered and adjusted to it, you're good to go from then on.
To the original question: Nah, all fingers for me.

i don't care what people say, I consider playing the bass with a pick to be a sin...lol
This can be found in the Book of Jeremy 4:1

It depends on the sound one is looking for. I have never done more the "doodle" with a pick. I'm a fingers player. I know a lot of players that ise a pic. If I were to play it a metal band I might move to pick. I don't see that happening.
When I "doodle on guitar I still use fingers/thumb.
-
All fingers, I don't even know how to properly use a pick for lead or bass.
-
Nothing but the fingers. ;D
-
Fingers. Haven't ever tried a pick.
-
Fingers all the way. If anyone plays with a pick, then he/she should put the bass down. I've never played with a pick and never will.
-
I believe people that play a lot of rock, metal, etc... sometimes use a pick.

I notice that to be true too .... also it seems that some that transition from guitar to bass play with a pick
Fingers here .. although I wouldn't mind learning to play with a pick too

Been playing bass for 31 years, always with a pick.
-
All finger pepl. With a pick i am sooo limited. U cant slap, u cant pop, u cant tap. Plus, my hand cant do that shape no more since i switched from guitar to bass so when i try and use a pick people laugh at me.

This must be a joke!!!!!

I guess it's all up to one's preference! I play with my fingers and thumb. I have discovered that quite a number of very famous r&b/funk tunes were, in fact, played with a pick. In particular, "For The Love Of Money" by the O'Jays (bassist: Anthony Jackson). The old school cats here will know that one. Also, many of the old Shalimar, Dynasty and Whispers tracks were played with a pick by either Leon Sylvers or Foster Sylvers.

I'm 25 years old and I know the O'Jays.

The bass run in "For the love of money" is crazy. That was one of the first bass lines I've heard. I'm 26 but my father is a bass player from way back.

What's your problem?

Exactly!! I can't stand any of that stuff.

to the pics defense though, I've heard some guys with a pick sound like they were slapping.
I just don't htink I can ever get over the fact that it's a pick....lol

Its all in fun. To each his own. Picks are not for me and I'll never "pick" up one. ;D

Actually, I think I saw a video of Carol Kaye picking & popin'

I use fingers, but have much respect for players who use picks. When playing some fast stuff you see how much time they put in to be accurate. Actually, Tye Tribbett came to Macon, Ga in Feburary and I got a chance to talk to Thaddeus and on the song No other choice on the Victory album he actually uses a pick and he did that night in Macon. Picks give a whole different sound and if we want to fully understand what our weapons are capable of we can't be closed mined to things like this. Just my opinion.

Well said, and more the attitude I expected on this forum, not the close-minded "My way is the right way" attitude expressed earlier in this thread and in every other bass forum. So I say Thank You.
-
I want to apologize to those who thought my post was "close minded." The question was asked if I used a pick, and I responded no I don't and gave my opinion on using picks. Sorry if my opinion was offending in any way.

As I stated in my previous post, "That's my opinion." Close-minded or not. Everyone has different views, this is my view. People think that gosepl musicians shouldn't play secular songs, well guess what, I'm playing at a wedding next month and their will be secular songs played.
-
Who's trying to put all these rules on music? >:(
I make a living playing secular music, and that frees me up to play in church too. The secular music I play is not offensive to God or man, and makes people happy. People just need to lighten up. ;)

Leftybass we were just poking at you a little bit. If you see a comment where people are being very sarcastic then 99% of the time it's a joke. I'll use a smiley next time to get my "mood" across a little more.
With that being said. I hope you are feeling a little better about that pic ;) (see using a smiley arleady..lol)
