AWWW MANNNN!!!!! Where do I start! LOL LOL!!!!
Me and my guys just had the laugh of our lives!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D
Oh my!!! My stomach hurts after watching Aaron Gerald Teddy and Marvin!!!!!!!!!!! LOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Especially Gerald!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dude Got off the track twice!!!!
He dropped the sticks twice!!!! The second time he dropped them, he was trying to play a simple quarter note on the tom!!! LOLOLOLOL!!!! LOLOLOL!!!!!!
And he was sloppy!!! And he did a 1996 gospel roll!!! LOLOLOLOLOL!!!!!!!!!!!
I could of sworn Thomas Pridgen said not to do that roll ever again!!!! LOLOLOLOLOL!!!!!!!!!!
My stomach hurts yall!!!
Then you got Teddy tellin people how Marvin is going to display how to be melodic on the drums!!!! There was nothing melodic about Marvin's playing at all! LOL!!! Then Teddy tells everyone that they're going to show everyone how to play to a click track! :-\ ?/? Thats what everyone before them was doing the whole time. :D He said it like it was something new. And Nissan made a track.... :o my grandma could have made a better track!!!
Marvin was alright. He played a beat. Wow. Teddy had a nice groove and pulled off some nice tricks. Aaron did his thing though. He killed his part of the "movement." They would have all sounded better if the music was better. It didnt really allow them to represent gospel drumming. They should have had Varo (chicago), Stanley (New Genisis) and a couple of other really hot gospel drummers right now. That section was garbage. And they were talking about how they are such great gospel drummers but none of them played any gospel! :-\ ?/?
Ronald Bruner was the most impressive in my opinion. Him and Thomas Lang. In fact, this whole thread is in my opinion, pretty good. Go get it if you havnt already. Its a must have. Especially the comedy section with Gerald Hayward!!! LOL!
I know this thread is harsh but it is what it is.

Fretai speak up! I can't hear (or see what your saying?)
First off I saw the dvd and thought Ronald Bruner was superb. As for Gerald and the gang, I thought Aaron was the best and I really like that rooster hair cut! (cluk, cluk) However there's a few low points; 1) They really didn't showcase gospel drumming. Teddy said that Gerald was an awesome gospel drummer and then named all of the secular artists he played for! Not a big deal. Marvin though seemed to have a couple of issues while he was playing, did he really help with making the song? I don't know cuz it seemed like he didn't feel comfortable and was slightly off. That's all. it is an awesome DVD to have. signing off..

IS THIS BETTER? :-*
-
I think Aaron is the only one who still plays gospel on the set...
-
...well since none of you were there you really don't know what happened. I can't explain Gerald's issues but I do know that Marvin's set was challenging to him due to the fact that they were having sound/monitor issues. A lot of cats that went said the same thing. Marvin had to keep it pocket and play it safe. I'm gon' to defend my boy till the end since he is sincere and didn't open his mouth to say anything dumb but did point "us" to the right door. ;)
...Ron Bruner is........well.........SHEDZ II Baby. Gon' and get 'em Flat. It's your turn. 8)

I hope that their performance isn't the only reason as to why you would be considering purchasing the MD '06 DVD.
Go ahead and purchase the DVD, dude...

I always felt it was a bad idea for all of them to go up at the same time. :-\ A show of unity is cool - but individual sets reinforces the idea that gospel drummers are as capable of drummer/musicians, each time one of them would've taken the stage. Furthermore, they go up all at once, and they experience technical difficulties all at once. Had they gone up individually, each musicians mistakes/difficulties could've given each subsequent drummer a checklist of things to avoid/correct in their own sets. Now THAT'S unity; Supporting each other, and learning from each other's mistakes.
They didn't, and they were all carted off with a bucket of Popeye's Chicken, like some sort of Vaudeville side-show/novelty act. ;)

Why didnt they just put a label on the cover of the dvd.
WARNING: The following drummers had sound/monitor issues. Listening discretion is advised. LOL!
I'm sorry J, but nobody wants to hear excuses. Thats why there was no warning label. LOL!
You see? My biggest problem with the whole thing is this. They represented gospel drummers and gospel drumming all wrong. They are way too clickish. Instead of doing whats best for the genre (gospel) by hooking up REAL gospel drummers who play REAL gospel music, they put there boys on. When's the last time anybody has seen or heard them on anything gospel? I would've rather seen the REAL gospel drummers who are active in REAL gospel music. Jeremy Haynes, Calvin Rodgers, Spanky.
-
I agree. Jeremy Haynes needs to be showcased at MD 07. The world would be blown away!

I have to say man Aaron is still doing his thing in the gospel world. My homeboy just did a set up for him not to long ago, but the rest of those cats I cant say I have seen. I really can't say I feel bad for those dudes when you misrepresent yourself...But I agree Jeremy, Calvin, Spank...Those are real Gospel Drummers.

....dude, Marvin's been on a few albums already. Like I said, he's the only one that I know that is still playing Gospel, Praise & Worship and managing Israel Houghton. ;) Hey, if he's going to be "Guilty by association" than it is what it is. Notice how no one was sayin' anything about him when the "Gerald Announcement" hit LGM. ;) We have to be real careful about what is stated on the boards man. Like I said, one out of 5 is still in.
Sidenote: I still think Nathaniel Townsley and 'em set the standard for anyone coming to MD Fest. out of the "Church". ;)

Man, Sheen that's not right dude!!!!!!!! I haven't seen the DVD yet and to be honest this part of the DVD really doesn't interest me too much. Everyone has a bad day/night/performance, etc. However, let's give them some props. They are doing what we dream of doing and that's making a living playing DRUMS!!!!!!!! They are musicians that have paid their dues and wouldn't have those gigs if they didn't have at least a bit of talent ;). However, we must learn how to be humble though and congratulate those who at that level. God has truly blessed them and they have taken full advantage of that, so I for one give them props for being able to hold those gigs. Maybe they did have monitor problems, who knows, but they did what they could during that time of adversity...
On a side note, I don't understand why everyone is getting this DVD just for this performance? Everyone has hyped up these artist when there are such a diverserse amount of cats on it!! NEWSFLASH STOP SLEEPING ON STEVE SMITH!!!!!!!
The guy is a living legend and just look at how effortless the guy is. Look at his posture, how relaxed he is, the guy just has all put together!!!!!! I don't know about you guys, but the DVD is worth buying just to see him play and get in the mind of such a complex, but yet well-rounded MUSICIAN. Gotta Go. Take care and God Bless.

Tryin' to get people to 'wake up' to something they're not interested in, in my opinion, is pointless. Steve Smith may be legendary, but that doesn't matter to many, unless they can relate to/connect with the type of music he play's.
You probably won't have to tell anyone on this messageboard to go check out the section with Aaron, Gerald, Marvin, & Nisan; and that's for obvious reasons. It'll probably be no different for non-gospel/Christian drummers who bought the disk to see their favorite drummer's. You think they're cracking open the case to check out Aaron, Gerald & Crew...? Hardly. Maybe after they've viewed, a thousand times, the part's they were excited to see. :D
I don't know many drummers/musicians who are indiscriminate when it comes to studying of genre's & approaches...

Hey man,
I totally agree with your statement. My only concern upon being here and reading quotes/comments on LGM is how closed minded SOME people are on here. Not everyone here is closed minded, but IMHO I don't understand why some people are so closed minded. WE ALL have a certain type(s) of music that we listen to more than others, but let's open up our minds at LGM. Let's familiarize ourselves with Jungle, Drum and Bass, Baio, etc. there's sooo much more music than "Gospel (don't really like the term too much)," R&B, Hiphop, etc. I'm not saying we should forget about it, but try to incorporate something else into the day. That's my opinion. ALOT of people here love Aaron Spears and Teddy Campbell, but let's be real I'm sure they listen to different types of music and really soak it in so they can play AUTHENTICALLY all the styles they play especially during the whole American Idol Tour.....On a side note, Welcome to LGM. I'm pretty new here too, but it's a great forum....Take care and God Bless.

In my opinion, I think alot of us are kind of disappointed in the performance(Technical Difficulties Whatever the case) b/c we all know what these guys are capable of. I think we shouldn't hold Gerald's performance over his head b/c we know he is an awesome player. For me, i think the Summit was okay, but there is much more material on the DVD that we can apply in various genres of music(gospel, R&B, etc.) JFunky is correct........Nathaniel Townsley set the standard that will be hard to surpass...I still watch that set at least twice a month......

First of all let me just say, "I love STEVE SMITH!!!!!" He's the man!
Now that we got that out of the way, whats not right about my opinion? This is my opinion of their performance. This is not about their past accomplishments. This is not about them being on a high level of pay. This is a discussion board and as far as I'm concerned, the performance is up for discussion. I'm on the floor laughing because they didnt sound good as a team of so called "gospel drummers" and it was funny.
Marvin: He was alright. I liked his snare/ride rolls. He had a nice groove but he was not musical. He kept hitting that china too much. He played it like a crash and it was way out of context. That drove me up the wall! That china sounded good though. He just needs to learn when and when not to hit it. And he was slightly off the track. It made him sound like less than a professional. Overall, boring. I was like when is this song going to end? And he tried to end it early as well! LOL!!!! Oh yeah, and he didnt play gospel.
Gerald: LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Teddy: He had a nice groove. Nice fills. Nice Hi-hat/splash work. His timing was good. I thought he was doing too much for the song though. Overall, boring. I was like when is THIS song going to end? Oh yeah, and he didnt play gospel.
Aaron: He was just an amazing cat! His timing was perfect! He was creative and very precise! Clean and mean! That dude was playing like somebody did something to him! Especially at the end! Oh yeah, and he didnt play gospel.
The reason why I say that the whole section was garbage is because Teddy, to me was insulting the crowd. Telling them that they might not know what it means to be melodic and heres how to play to a click track. Thats garbage to come to Modern Drummer Fest with that attitude. And then talk about gospel music and not play it. Please.
Their intro was pretty big but everything after that was, well, whatever.

Maybe the one's that you think 'choked', did so because of the pressure of having to perform at THE Modern Drummer Festival.
I mean, I saw a clip of Spank at NAMM, and I almost busted my skull on my computer desk, from fallin' asleep. I know Spanky can play much better than that, but I think the pressure of playing, in a booth, alone, at NAMM ... got to him.
-
im not sure what some of you are trying to say when you say that none of them play gospel..
Marvin = Fred Hammond . . . . need i say more
Teddy = Mary Mary and didnt he do stuff with the soul seekers?
Gerald & Aaron i can understand because the ones they played on are kinda not as known...
-
I think the focus has been lost...Some how we have managed to go to the history of who these cats have played for in the Gospel world..I thought we were talking about the way they played while representing Gospel drumming. :-\
-
Yo this is what I have to say about the "So Called Gospel Section". Overall I agree it showed no justice on Gospel Drumming. Let me tell you what they should have done. They should have had Mike Bereal on a B3, Eddie Brown on the Keys, a sick bass player anybody, and just improvised. Cause that's Gospel music. Also as far as certain people getting of the track of a song you played on tour every day for 3 months straight there is no excuse. That all I will say as far as criticism. Cause every last one of them dudes is working! Making that cheese so obviously they doing something right! I'm sure its a lot of us thinking we can blaze them dudes but look at the overall. So even thought the Gospel Section wasn't that hot. I still got respect for every last one of them dudes especially Gerald because he did pave the way as far as opening up the door for gospel drummers to play in that huge arena.
-
oh and i for got to say that Aaron is a beast! period. I like how he perfected the 16th notes and triplets. And Ron did his thing!! I liked the music he played to. It was not the standard 1...2. It was nice.
-

And no one is hating on those guys. The focus is the misrepresentation of Gospel Drumming.

For the most part I agree! Im tired of these big companies grabbing these secular drummers and dropping the label Gospel Drummer to their names to look like they are supporting Gospel Musicians/Music to get you Niers to buy their products! And the drummers in question who are playing the white mans games are no better then their slaves!
Hear me out! We know good and well that the only one still playing gospel up there is Aaron (much respect guy) but he is not a full time gospel drummer. Marvin (is one of my fave drummers of all time) where has he gone!? Its like he took himself out and put Calvin in. I love Calvin too, but I miss hearing Marvin. We all know Marvin can put out and is also seasoned..SO... If he cant hear, hes going to do his best to sound good! That's better then trying to show off and look stupid because you went off time with the track!!!!!
As for Gerald and Teddy; well if they think they are gospel drummers then I must be Tommy Lee playing for Montly Crew! Its sad that these guys cant just go to the companies and say "Yo look at the guys who are kicking it Gospel for real like Calvin Rodgers or Billy Powell" and so on, and so on!
I would have loved to see Calvin, Jeremy, Big Mike (who is playing gospel) and on and on! The true gospel drummers! We all grew up in the Church and most of us have played on Gospel recordings, but does that make us all Gospel drummers if we have seen the back of a choir for 10 years , NO! Or we serve the Lord but our day job is backing the Booty Dolls, Cold Blooded Gang Killz, NO! I feel like they are taking the place of drummers who should be there!
Now Im not into dissin Gerald or anyone like that! Ill fully admit; I would not be who I am as a drummer if there was no Gerald! Everyone has a bad drumming day, but to back him up; We know of bazillions of tracks where Gerald killed it!!!

Dude-On-Drums,
You are JIVE man!!!!!!!!!! I remember when i used to love to see people better than me, make a mistake, or fumble, all because they were at a higher level than I was. it made me feel like that they were no better than I was. Just admit, these cats are actually doing their thing....and at your age, you are nowhere near where thhey are at (as far as fame) I wrote this so everyone could see the real reason why people post comments the way you did. It was uncalled for. But its all good.......Teddy, Nisan, Gerald, and Marvin can easily get a new drumset from their sponsors. after that perfromance...what about you?

No... you tried to make Sheen look bad & just ended up making yourself look just as bad.
NO RETALIATION PEOPLE. IT'S NOT WORTH IT!

Just so you know, I'm not jealous of their fame. I'm not envious of their gifts. I have my own level of fame and I have my own gifts. But you are right about one thing. I didnt have to point out their mistakes, but I did. When someone kills something, I point that out as well. This is a discussion board. People discuss things.
So let me tell you the real reason why I posted the opening statement of this thread.
The performance caught me off guard and I didnt expect to see or hear what came from my 42" Sony HDTV. ;D
It was trully funny. Thats it. It was funny and everyone in the room was crackin up and its not cause we're haters, it was because it was funny and it caught us off guard like, "is this really happening on Modern Drummer Fest?" It kinda looked like the first round of drum off! :D
But what ever, you can think what you want. Its all good. But I'm not a hater. I give props when props are due. In this case, they are not.

soldrums you are like a baby crying in the wilderness! So you feel fame should determine your status as a drummer!? Im better known then you and have endorsements, so does that make me better then you!? NO! And to correct you, NO! Teddy, Nisan, Gerald, and Marvin can't just go and get a new kit from their sponsors...They most likely get one free kit a year and have to buy the rest at a very good discount! But anyway most known, unknown drummers have store hook ups and get everything at cost anyway so why bother with being sponsored! Anyway Sol grown folks are talking take your place at the kids table along with my 2 year old.

This has really gone in the wrong direction... Once again can't we just get along... If you don't like what someone says cool, but realize it is there opinion and they do have a right to it. If you have a problem with someones comment take it to pm, don't call them out on here.

I agree 100%. I don't judge a drummers ability by their resume/number of recordings/number of gigs. Some people are simply better at sellin' themselves, or more likeable, or they know the right people. Talent, alone, is not why most people have the gigs that they have.
In most cases, their is always someone out there better for the job.

So are tennis/basketball shoes, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

-Sheen
...still laughin yall...LOLOLOLOL!!!...
I just putting in my 2 cents in. If MD 2006 RnB summit was that bad, why would they release it? I don't think that MD would put out something that is bad. That is just me.
