Title: I need some advice
Post by: MalikHughes on May 24, 2007, 11:04:20 PM
I am the choir director for the Young Adult Choir at my church.  We have been singing together for almost 4 years.  My church is a very old and conservative church.  God spoke to me about starting a Young Adult Choir.  We have alot of young people under the age of 35 but there isn't really anything for them to do.  There are 15 choir members and they sound really good together now.  It was a rough start.  As I said they sound really good together, at rehearsal but come the sunday we sing it's like we have never rehearsed at all.
I have been speaking to them about letting the songs ministered to them.  I have also said that it doesn't matter how the congregation looks at them or talks about them, they can't get you into heaven.  I tell them to just let go and let God in and He will take care of the rest.  When we talk about it, they nod their heads in agreement with me but come the 4th Sunday when we sing, they shut down again.
This has been going on for awhile now.  Any advice on what I can tell the choir?  I have said all I can say.  I don't know what else to do.  I have prayed and prayed for God to give me answer.  He has given me what to say in the past but how can I get the choir to truly understand?

Thanks
God Bless

Ask them:

Kids and young adults have to want it from within (internal motivation, it's called). They'll nod their heads and say whatever in private, but in public is when it counts. And, if they aren't going to show God that they have a heart for Him like they say they do, then it's just lip service. He'd rather they be HOT or COLD, not lukewarm; He'll spit them out. :-\

Just read my signature line. I pray that I've been a help to you. Be Blessed. :)

Try to get them on a program outside of your home church.  Sometimes people perform better in front of people they don't know.

If they do well it will give them some confidence.

Thanks for the advice sjonathan02.  I had choir rehearsal today and ask the choir Why they were here(why do they want to be apart of a choir)?  I ask them to go home tonight and really think about that question.  I also told them that I would rather have 2 or 3 who wants to minister not only to themselves but to others as well then to have a full choir who are scared to minister.  I don't know what will happen tomorrow but we will see.
Also saxandkeys thanks as well.   They have been out to other engagments and they are just fine.  It just when we are at home they response that way.

I'm glad we were able to help. I pray that God really moves and does a new thing in your situation.

Be Blessed. :)

Try incorporating some prayer, scripture, praise and worship time in your rehearsal. Some churches and some choirs have mandatory prayer time before rehearsal starts. In fact, I'm going to start something like that tomorrow in my rehearsals. That shows your choir that if you're only here to sing and entertain "FOLKS" then your season of singing in this choir is over.

Really some choirs are just like some people who wash the outside of the truck or car but never detail the inside... for true vessels to be used of God, they need to clean up EVERYTHING.

What's in a man will come out of them. We all need to make sure we preach the song to the choir while we teach it so they can preach from experience the song to the congregation.

Hopefully that helped you it sure helped me...
