Title: Are Hymns Important????....... Oh Yes They Are!!!
Post by: iplaytheorgan2 on May 28, 2007, 04:18:59 PM
I've have the pleasure of being from the "Ole School" and able to play "New School".  I just want to admonish my fellow younger musicians, to learn hymns.  If you don't know any, search out an "Ole School" musician and get some instruction.  Hymns and anthems are apart of our culture.  It's just sad that many gifted young musicians just don't know our African-American, Gospel history.  Does anyone have a response to this important topic.  I attached a clip of myself playing worship and praise.  What do you think?
God Bless

I am new school but love to play hymns! As a matter of fact we doing a service next month of just doing old songs from the 1900s and work our way up to this year. I don't play that much traditional playing at church but when needed, I can work it. maybe I can get a dvd of the service and post some on here for yall to see.

I grew up in a church that did mostly traditional hymnal songs and in the baptist hymnal, I know a little over half of the book, although I don't read (which I am going to do very very soon.)

Hymns are VITAL.

20 years from now, you may not still be playing songs from Israel or Tye's latest CD......

But there's a good chance you'll still be playing "His eye is on the Sparrow" and "What a friend we have in Jesus".

Finally replied to the right thread this time.  ;D

I grew up in a church that sang mostly old hymnals and chorus's up until a few years ago. We kinda strayed away from the old school stuff for a while but I think we're finally getting the balance I think every church needs. It's a shame to have to say it, but a lot of people become bitter about music in the church. Some people think it was a mistake to bring in the new stuff and vice versa. I've even heard of churches that split because this issue. I'll admit, I tend to shy away from the new stuff, but I try to keep an open mind and a good spirit. I'll never let go of my heritage in music. I'm still young, but I always tell those musicians younger than me who are just starting out to learn the hymnals. Those of us who still have a passion for the old school music, it's up to us to pass that passion on to the younger generation.

I am so fortunate to have a music director that knows how to mix the old and new. We're bringing back the hymnals again, but trying to stay somewhat modern. I couldn't ask for a better music ministry.

Thanks for those wonderful words, RMS2003.  We have to keep the ole skool alive.  Classical musicians keep Classical alive and Jazz musicians keep Jazz alive.  Think about it, just look at how many centuries Classical has survived.  We've got to do the same for hymns, spirituals and Gospel with all of it's genres.  That's our heritage.

Like you we have a pretty good balance in our church, when it come to old and new.

I have been stating this and stressing this to all of the younger as well as some older musicians for years is that you MUST KNOW YOUR HYMNS!!!  AND THATS A RAP!! :)   Bishop Cole

VERY GOOD ARGUMENT. I can agree with that. Those that teach have that power of influence to make that happen.

Nah they're not important.  Until somebody starts to sing one and you can't play it.

Worship is not all about who's on WOW 2007. In 2017 nobody will remember those songs.  But they'll know Blessed Assurance and Hold to God's Unchanging Hand.

I think this is the BIGGEST lie we tell folks. That's like saying there is NO relevance in today's praise and worship music, and that notion seems a bit naive, to me.
