The progression typically used in traditional music is:
1 - 4 - 5 - 1
-
When playing Traditonal style 1-4-5-1. Do you need to add passing chords or do you just go from the:
key Bb
(1) Bb\Bb D F
(4) Eb\Eb G Bb or Eb\Bb Eb G (2nd inversion)
(5) F\A C F (1st inversion)
(1) Bb\Bb D F

Remember that traditional gospel is based on blues, now. Don't forget those dominant sevenths.
Our contemporary music is more based on major sevenths.

Whoa, we took our time responding, didn't we? My apologies . . .
Whether or not you add passing chords depend on two things; one, does the music give you time to add them? And two, you personal tastes. Some songs just sound so busy with passing chords, it actually takes away from the audience appreciating the song and participating in the worship experience.
Hope this helps,
Be Blessed,

Mid morning sunlight bounces off Mike's cheerful face as it streams
through the small windows of the lounge at his peaceful haven in
Nagpokhari. Enjoying the warm playful acts of the sun, he begins
our conversation with a persuasive thought, "I find a lot of Nepalese switching into Western lifestyles without looking back at their rich traditions. I wish they could interpret their traditions to create a new contemporary way of life, fusing the old with the new and thereby honouring the past by mixing it with a contemporary way of life".

When playing a traditional 1-4-5-1 progression, you can add passing chords if you have enough time to do that, depending on the song that you are playing.
You could do 1-"3"-4-5-1
You could do 1-4-"2"-5-1
You could do 1-4-5-"7"-1
You can walk up to the 4, example...1-2-3-4-5-1
Or you could mix it all up, example...1-2-3-4-2-5-7-1
See what works for different songs

I am very interested in the strong spiritual sounds of that 'old traditional' gospel. Can anyone give me the chords. I have read that that sound comes from the 'blues scale'. Is this true? If so, what are the gospel, blues progressions for gospel music.
