Title: Anthems
Post by: favoritepsalm1 on June 11, 2007, 07:25:11 AM
Does anyone have a good definition/description of an anthem?  I would love to have some good examples of anthems too.  I've got a vague idea, but I always want to know more!

'preciate it!

"Let Everything that Hath Breath" (Mattie Moss Clark)

"O Give Thanks Unto the Lord" (Tennessee 4th Jurisdiction)

...and pretty much anything that Dr. Clark ever wrote!  LOL!

Most recent ones...

God Be Praised ( T.D. Jakes)

Anthem of Praise (Richard Smallwood)

John 3:16 (GMWA Youth Choir)

A throwback...

O Magnify The Lord With Me (GMWA Mass Choir)

along with the ones listed are great examples too...I remember back in the 80's when you couldn't go to a church a not expect to hear at least one anthem being sung. :)

I SAY CONSULT LOOPY OR BISHOP2 ON THIS (the "anthem doctors)....but

According to my teaching an anthem is a SCRIPTURE that has been set to music.

(I got the saints at church with this one!!!  OOOOOOOOH!)

So, Byron Cage's song "for thou o lord art a shield for me ......" fits PERFECTLY into that category.  Every verse and chorus is straight scripture.

So, in the last "y'all need to sing hymns and anthems and do less of that contemporary stuff".....YEP....I TAUGHT IT!  WE NAILED IT!  And before I taught it I explained to them what an anthem was.

It was funny!!!!!!!!!!!

The majority of Faith Davis, the Minstrels and Levites latest project is full of anthems. If you watch the video, you will hear her explain what anthems are and why her songs are straight scripture...just a friendly reminder :)

This is good stuff!  I had “God Be Praised” and “Anthem Of Praise” in my head already.  Couldn’t recall with whom originated Psalm 23 though…

Keep 'em coming!

Not sure what kind of distribution she has, but she only lives like 30-45 minutes away from us!  I can't even describe how awesome Ralph and Faith Davis and their ministry is.  God through them has changed my life as a Levite, and that's aside from their music.

Quick question - who did the first arrangement of Genesis?
It's been out soooooo long, but I'd like to know.
The only recording I know of that song is the Gospel Soul Children of New Orleans.

Again I say...MATTIE MOSS CLARK ("I Can Do All Things" album with the International COGIC Mass Choir).

I can't see "Total Praise" fitting the "anthem" category.  "My Soul Doth Magnify the Lord"?  NAH!  They're good songs...but they don't fit the "accepted" definition of what an anthem is in gospel music.

Try this definition:

Anthem:
a song of praise or loyalty to God that often contains scripture and employs strong characteristics of classical music.

hmmmm.... methinks that's a pretty good definition.  It fits the songs I would say are anthems.

Ok.  I was taught that it was a "scripture that has been set to music".  So, when you add a lot of choruses/vamps/what have you that are not exact words of scripture then I SAY (based on workshops attended, etc.) that it is not an anthem.

But who am I?  We are what we're taught, I guess.

LOL! You're crackin' me up.  If I'm not mistaken the "Black Gospel" term is the same word with a completely different definition.  I'd be interested to find out who developed the word as far as its meaning in gospel music.

We heard Thomas Whitfield arranged Genesis. Not sure if it's entirely accurate but it's wut we heard.

No, it's not true...The Gospel Soul Children's founder, Albert S. Hadley arranged the song on their first release, "Sings Something Old and Something New Phase I". It was later recorded in '79 by Mattie Moss Clark & COGIC International Choir, but the song was titled "In The Beginning".

The song was recorded again byThe Gospel Soul Children on their second release that featured Thomas Whitfield on the album. Even on the second release, Whitfield had nothing to do with that song, credit and arrangement for "Genesis" went to Hadley. I think with Whitfield's association on that album, many believe he wrote or arranged the song.

:)
