Title: Building endurance
Post by: EricT on August 01, 2007, 03:51:48 AM
This cat asked me recently how do I build up my endurance?....I told him that often I play with James Brown tunes or old Barry White tunes....because they are so long sometimes and don't change much. I have my own fun with them.....

What do you guys do to build endurance?

There are a number of things that can help your endurance. But I find in the end its physical conditioning. Just like if you are out of shape and run up the stairs and end up puffing, the same can be said on the kit.  Now if you just meant endurance as in playing 16th notes straight for 15 mins at 140 bpm or something...its still conditioning.  repetition, repetition, repetition.

It's funny you guys posted this, because lately I've been asking myself the same question...I was beginning to notice myself getting dumb tired, for no reason. Now I weigh about 230, but I'm in descent shape...I'm telling you guys during a church service I get the total package...

Muscle crampage
Out of breath
physical fatigue

and it stinks, I've been trying to figure out a solution other than exercise as well, I'm ready to just play a whole service without feeling like I just ran a gauntlet

Man my dad is 6'3 and weighs 310. I guess I got it from him..lol.. Really I don't eat very healthy AT ALL! I have a high metabolism so I can eat without really gaining any weight. I don't know how I got so tall because my mom is only like 5'3  :P..

Your dad's genes are the dominant aspect regarding your height.  And, your metabolsim is high for now; just wait a few more Mango seasons, and see if you'll be singing that same tune.  Remember that you have your dad's height, now what about that weight?

It'll catch up to you.

Height means nothing if you're set up ergonomically.  A person's height has no correlation on being able to reach cymbals.  You, my friend, are "reaching"...

Something i noticed though is that when people practice they will practice grooves and they will do the whole speed it up to as fast as they can get etc.. but the trick is to sustain that tempo for awhile and thats with every groove. even if every thing you play is at 100 BPM you should still be workin out at 210 + BPM.

something i noticed that helped me fill wise and shedding is that i will have times where i just shed over stuff after i practice and what that works the muscles even harder because of the intensity of it. and i fyou practice for an hour and shed for an hour about every day i guarantee you that you wont be cramping at church. i know because i used to cramp at church alot before i came to Berklee and having to play all the time everyday has helped me to develop more endurance.

the funny thing is that my pops is 5'7 and my mom is 5'5 but my uncles on my dads side is over 6'2 and my dads twin is 6'4....

Im gonna try to keep that weight thing to a minimum! I learned about the whole metabolism thing last semester. All the guys on my dads side are over 6'0 even my grandfather who was 6'5. Im glad my mom doesn't carry the baldness gene. By 25 I would have looked like Abdul Jabaar..lol.. That is possible!! ;) :D

That's true!!!! Id have to say just put in some good long hours practising. What I like to do is burn mixed Cd's and act like Im really playing in a concert. I see all the people, lights everything...This also helps me to be able to pull out new licks live and not have brain freeze live when Im ready to pull them out for real.
